Text & Context Nursing Journal is completing 15 years of publication. This debut, as any other rite of passage, deserves to be commemorated, in order that its network of meanings within the scientific production of Brazilian nursing is reinforced, and so that the ethical values and social commitment that have always been its basis for editorial policy are renovated and amplified. During these years, the periodical has been edited by the Nursing Graduate Program (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Enfermagem - PEN) from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Brazil (UFSC), with the direct and decisive collaboration of diverse partners.

The beginning of its history occurred in June of 1992, when the Doctorate in Nursing Course was being installed at UFSC. This coincided with the moment in which the Master’s Course in Nursing was completing 15 years of success. The journal was born due to the great demand for producing articles, both from our faculty members and from graduate students, and from practicing nurses. At that time, there were few national vehicles for publication, consumption, and socialization of such scientific production.

The great differential of this periodical has been its decision to be a Thematic publication. Based on important questions to Brazilian nursing and seeking to attend the philosophy of the PEN/UFSC, each edition of the journal has thus dealt with a specific theme, discussing it from various perspectives and different angles; a characteristic that remains a staple of the journal’s contribution. In this context, many different themes have been examined by the Journal, which have covered an ample list theoretical, conceptual, and methodological discussions in the area of nursing and health. This diversity can be seen in the Box 1.

From its first edition, in June of 1992, to December of 1996, the journal was published with a bi-annual periodicity. From then on, attending a greater demand of articles submitted and the necessary amplification of opportunities in vehicles for disseminating knowledge produced in Nursing and related areas, the journal became quarterly. It remained as such until December of 2002. From January of 2003 until the present date, the journal has been published once every four months.

Text & Context Nursing Journal, currently is characterized as an internationally circulating periodical, classified as - International B by the Periodical Evaluation System of Coordination of University-Level Personnel Development Internacional B pelo Sistema de Avaliação de Periódicos da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de nìvel Superior (Qualis/CAPES). Its content, as we sought to show in Box 1, encompasses technical-scientific production related to the area of health and nursing, especially.

From its creation until December of 2007, there have been 16 volumes published, totaling 56 editions. Forty-eight of these have been regular editions, and eight have been special. Beyond the print version, with an annual printing of 500 examples, the journal has been available online since the beginning of 2006, in full text at http://www.textoecontexto.ufsc.br . In 2006, it also began to integrate as well the Portal of BVS - Enfermagem at http://www.enfermagem.bvs.br .

Throughout this time, the editorial and admistrative processes of the Journal have been improved in order to better attend the growing demands for quality in scientific periodicals. The latest reformulations were based upon the criteria adopted by the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). In a collective and entrepreneurial effort at the end of 2006, Text & Context Nursing Journal was approved to be part fo the SciELO Brasil Collection http://www.scielo.br , available, in full text and open access in this collection as of September of 2007. The insertion of the Journal in this virtual library will contribute to the publication of Brazilian scientific production, making it more visible on national and international scenarios. This conquest, beyond being a significant mark in the history of the Journal, also impulses the search for its excellence.

Until present day, Text & Context Nursing Journal is listed in the following databases: Literatura Latino Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS); Banco de Dados de Enfermagem (BDENF); Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL); Index de Enfermería en Español (CUIDEN); Sistema Regional de Información em línea de Revistas Científicas de América Latina, el Caribe, España e Portugal (LATINDEX); Red de Revistas Científicas de América Latina y el Caribe, Espana y Portugal (RedALyC) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO).

The year 2007 has been , however, a significant mark in the history of the Journal. We thank all those who have contributed in distinct, but equally important manners: Coordinators of the Nursing Graduate Program, Members of the Editing Body, Members of the Executive Council, Heads of the Nursing Department at UFSC, Faculty members, Students, Technical-Administrative Personnel, Subscribers, Authors of Articles, and "Ad Hoc" Consultants. We would like to particularly highlight the recurring and uninterrupted participation of collaborating authors from all regions of Brazil, as well as the innumerous foreign authors who have sought the periodical in order to publish their scientific production. This has favored in the efforts of Text & Context Nursing Journal to overcome barriers, both concretely and symbolically, seeking to accompany the fertile technical-scientific development of national and international nursing.

We reiterate that the journal has been more and more the result of the collective efforts that it produces and moves with the quality it deserves. Our homage and thanks to all those who have participated and participate in this construction, and especially to its directive body, represented by the following Registered Nurses who are faculty members at the PEN/UFSC, from its creation until its mature and unquiet adolescence.
