Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This paper is aimed at examining which kinds of knowledge are required in questions of textual understanding in Spanish: implicit or explicit, in external exams. The theoretical framework was drawn from studies by DeKeyser (1995, 2003), Ellis and He (1999), Ellis et al. (2009), Williams (2009) and Mitchell, Myles and Marsden (2013), among others. Based on such studies, we started from the hypothesis that there are differences concerning the mechanisms used and required in questions that demand implicit and explicit knowledge to learn reading in Spanish, both for analyzing the nature of knowledge and the characteristics of instruction and its implications in the process of acquisition. Thus, we analyzed, following a quantiqualitative approach, questions regarding two informative texts in Spanish, of worldwide circulation, and results show that students scored better in answers to questions that demanded implicit knowledge, specifically related to textual understanding. |

Original article INTERSECTIONS OF LANGUAGE EDUCATION, VISUAL LITERACIES, SEXUALITIES AND GENDERS: A(N) (IM)POSSIBLE ENCOUNTER? Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This article seeks to revisit the place of genders and sexualities in language education. It emphasizes the importance of addressing the languages of marginalized non-hegemonic bodies, including non-heterosexual/heteronormative bodies, bodies who continue to face abjection and exclusion in contemporary societies. It investigates the (im)possible and (im)probable encounter amongst language education and pedagogies focused on difference, sexualities, genders and their intersections with visual literacies. The research adopts a qualitative methodology and the methods of investigation involve review of literature, alongside digital document analysis through visual literacy methodologies in which images on social media platforms are interpreted as meaning making processes. Section 1 discusses the concepts of genders and sexualities by focusing on nonheteronormative and non-heterosexual existences. Section 2 contends that language education, visual literacies and gender and sexuality studies could and should be in constant dialogue in language classes. Finally, the article offers four praxeologies for language teacher education amidst the intersections of sexualities, and genders. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This article reports the results of a reception research whose main objective was to investigate the preference of deaf and hard of hearing people regarding the use of onomatopoeia and/or descriptions in the translation of sound effects, especially those not found in the real world. Sixteen volunteers watched a subtitled short film and answered questions about the translation strategies used. It was concluded that the preferred strategy for both deaf and hard of hearing people was the association of onomatopoeia to descriptions, since this practice would allow for greater drama and immersion and contribute to the expansion of vocabulary and knowledge of the hearing culture. However, deaf people preferred the use of the simple present tense for descriptions, while hard of hearing people opted for the gerund. Finally, both groups highlighted the importance of the musical symbol for the translation of songs. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT We examine instances of language commodification in which fragments of a “small language”, Brazilian sign language (Libras), appear as added value to niche products that would otherwise be trivial. Following Critical Sociolinguistics studies that have described the emergence of discourses of language as profit (to the detriment of discourses of language as pride), we present data selected in virtual environments of a virtual store that offers decorative products with spelling signs in libras (fingerspelling) transliterating words in Portuguese. In contrast, we did not find any accessibility resources in libras offered by the website promoting the sale of such products. Our analysis indicates that the growing visibility of libras among the hearing segments of the population has led to the materialization of language ideologies in which libras appears as a sign of “inclusion”, “empathy”, “respect for diversity”. Despite being based on perceptions rejected by deaf social movements, these ideologies seem to enable the generation of solidarity capital, a subtype of symbolic capital. Our argument, therefore, is that commercial products such as those we analyzed serve the fetishized celebration of diversity (including linguistic diversity), and thus the mobilization of libras as a sign of a “social cause” with which it is possible to engage through consumption, and which is accommodated by the hearing gaze and produced for that gaze, the “ableist compassion” of the consumer supporting the attempt to commodify libras. |

The creative economy can be read through the lenses of the restricted economy, whose interest is the conservation and self reproduction or it can be interpreted from a general economy perspective, recognizing dissemination and traveling language in the translation path (DERRIDA, 2011). The analysis of formal discourses such as those of the creative economy, in the light of Derrida’s deconstructive orientation, allows both the recognition (identification) and the estrangement (differentiation) of political and institutional structures that facilitate (and difficult) the reception and activation of the creative economy by collectives. The purpose of this article is to advance the understanding of language in travel of models of creative economy, experienced in cultural collectives (DERRIDA, 1986). In the methodological repertoire, an instrumental and procedural metaphor (Sys.terna) stands out as a way of translating the convergence of economic processes (cultural, social, commercial, etc.) operable by collectives, whether in central or marginal scenarios to the primary focus of the government creative economy policy. The Experimental Creative Economy Agency (AGECX), the base image and scenario of this study, was conceived to act proactively in the teaching, translation, production of meaning and qualification of educational initiatives identified with the development of reading, writing and editing. The study reveals the discursive dispute that occurs in the process of institutional formulation of the concept of creative economy in symbolic spaces such as the “political and societal agenda” and the “scientific agenda” - local, regional, national and international (BRUNSTEIN; SCARTEZINI; RODRIGUES, 2012). |

Abstract in English: Abstract The study analyzes the role African American Vernacular English plays in Twain’s ‘A true story’ investigating how the source text’s dialect features were translated into German in order to find out whether the two German translations studied achieve functional equivalence with the source text. First, using Register and Genre Theory, the dialect features in Twain’s short story were analyzed determining their function. Next, the two German translations were studied. The analysis indicated that the original text’s dialect features were generally normalized in the earlier translation and dialectized in the second one. However, neither translation achieved functional equivalence because the non-standardness of language is lost in the first translation and the inconsistent use of invented ungrammatical features in the second translation actually causes an opposite stylistic effect in the target language reader. The study therefore concludes that dialect in literary texts is an important style marker that warrants careful consideration by the translator. |

Artigo original A SOCIAL SEMIOTICS OF THE MOVING IMAGE ON SOCIAL MEDIA: AN ANALYSIS OF DISCURSIVE STRATEGIES FOR POPULARIZING SCIENCE IN A TIKTOK VIDEO Carvalho, Flaviane Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo Durante a pandemia da covid-19, muitos pesquisadores e cientistas se apropriaram das tecnologias disponibilizadas pela web para combater a desinformação, conquistando inclusive uma expressiva parcela do público jovem. Abstract in English: Abstract During the Covid-19 pandemic, many researchers and scientists took advantage of technologies made available on the web to combat misinformation, including winning over a significant portion of the young public. From this perspective, this article analyzes the most liked and commented video on the profile of tiktoker Antonio Miranda, published during the pandemic. The objective is to analyze and discuss how the visual semiotic resources configured in the video contribute to the construction of meaning - precisely in multimodal texts that involve moving images -, as well as to the practice of popularizing science in the digital environment, through TikTok. The theoretical foundation of this study is Multimodal Social Semiotics (Hodge; Kress, 1988; Kress, 2010), which focuses on communicative social practices of creating meanings of all types, whether verbal, visual and/or sound. To analyze the moving image, a proposal was formulated in light of Burn (2013, 2016). The most recurrent semiotic resources point to a powerful interaction between Antonio and the viewer. As for the filming resources, a relationship is built between the participants in an interaction (i.e., between Antônio and his spectators) of involvement, proximity, supposedly devoid of power hierarchies, as if their worlds were familiar, similar and coinciding. Furthermore, gestures play the role of conveying credibility, emphasizing key words and providing fluidity in understanding the explanation. As for editing resources, the prevalent option for the fixed camera and dry cutting reinforce the idea of truth and reality of the representation; Transition effects add rhythm and dynamism to the video. |

Abstract in English: Abstract Audiovisual Translation (AVT), besides being a popular translation mode, has become a fertile ground for selecting materials for teaching and learning foreign languages (PARDO, 2022), particularly regarding subtitling (ARAÚJO, 2008; DÍAZ CINTAS; CRUZ, 2008; TALAVAN, 2010, 2011; LERTOLA, 2013, 2015; FERNÁNDEZ-COSTALES, 2021a; PARDO, 2022, among others). In light of this, we present a methodological proposal for a didactic sequence (DOLZ; NOVERRAZ; SCHNEUWLY, 2004) for teaching Spanish as a foreign language to higher education students. This proposal involves a subtitling task using the Mexican animated feature film “El camino de Xico” (NETFLIX, 2020) following the functionalist translation approach of Reiss and Vermeer (1996) and Nord (1991, 2012, 2016), which considers the linguistic and cultural diversity of the source and target texts. Drawing from realistic communicative situations provided by audiovisual materials (VANDERPLANK, 2019), we aim to encourage teachers to use subtitling as a tool to help their students recognize linguistic and extralinguistic factors, beyond the grammatical aspects of the language. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Since the second half of the 2010s, biomedical science has achieved undetectability, which means the suppression of the viral load of HIV in the blood, through antiretroviral therapy (ART), and the untransmissibility (U=U) of this virus through sexual contact. This event has begotten impacts on HIV/AIDS activism, which, largely due to undetectability, has extend its activities beyond networks and NGOs/Aids and occupied, in the form of “digital swarms”, social networks such as Instagram. In this article, we analyze two publications by digital activist Lucian Ambrós (@posithividades) on this social network, in which “undetectable” is emphasized as a new subjective category linked to the HIV/Aids epidemic. Through cartography, we analyzed his statements as speech acts and watchwords that seek to effect a new subjectivity in a “cry for escape” against the “death sentence” of stigma. At another point, we highlight, through the analysis of a speech act by the activist Vanessa Campos, a point of tension regarding the use of this biomedical category as subjective category. We demarcate the link of this “undetectable digital activism” with a neoliberal reason which, under the pretext of creating survival mechanisms, has transformed HIV/Aids activism into a type of enterprise. |

Original article TWITTER IMPOLITENESS METADISCOURSE AND THE POLITICAL DOMAIN Oliveira, Ana Larissa Adorno Marciotto Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO Desafiar as normas sociais de conduta verbal é sempre um risco à reputação, especialmente na esfera política. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Defying social norms of verbal conduct can be perceived as a risk to reputation, particularly in the political sphere. Taking this into view, our aim is to discover how Twitter1 users reacted to the formula “son of a bitch”, employed by US President Biden at a press conference. The theoretical background of the study relies on the theories of impoliteness and the Principle of Impoliteness Reciprocity. Our data comes from the tweets published as a reply to journalist Doocy after he commented on the episode. Another episode, involving insults in the political domain, was also examined to expand the findings. It happened when Philippine President Duterte cursed Barack Obama in a live speech. In both occasions, the findings point to the legitimization of impolite behaviors in political discourse, which were framed as instances of counter-impoliteness. As for the impoliteness metadicourse, it was populated with insults, unpalatable questions, and playful language. The findings suggest that the process of “normalization of shameless language” may be underway on Twitter. |

Artigo original VENEZUELA AND REFUGEES IN RIOEDUCA: DISCUSSING INTERDISCIPLINARITY AND CRITICAL (IN-)ABILITY IN THE PROCESSES OF LESSON DESIGN AND APPROPRIATION Souza Júnior, Jaime de Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo Este artigo discute aspectos/traços que apontam para uma tendência crescente: entrelaçamentos envolvendo eventos pedagógicos e o domínio digital. Abstract in English: Abstract This paper discusses aspects/traces that point to a growing tendency: entanglements involving pedagogical events and the digital domain. The study focuses on the digitalisation and sharing dynamics of an English lesson that is presented in the teaching material Rioeduca. The material is exclusively distributed to the largest network of public schools in South America, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The dynamics referred to allowed for the connexion between the physical space of a classroom, the material under discussion and a group of teachers on WhatsApp, where varied discursive-semiotic and ideological aspects/traces have become visible. This discussion is guided by a theoretical construct, which, by reinterpreting Foucault ([1970]1990), I propose: the order of critical pedagogy discourse. Through the latter, it becomes possible to explore educational (con)texts in an interdisciplinary way, and discuss these qualitatively. Whilst discussing the event referred to and its related traces that have been captured, I seek to make visible: i) the centrality of critical (in-)ability in the processes of lesson design and appropriation, and more precisely how the current crisis in Venezuela is addressed and the impact it may have on the situation of refugees; and ii) the micro/macro pedagogical and social implications that emerge from the event under discussion. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to present the outcome of the analysis about some issues of identity and ideological nature that pervade the discussion of linguistic substitution, more precisely morphological, of the lexical unit “homossexualidade” for “homossexualismo”. The excerpts analyzed were gathered from journalistic texts, of the 21st century, of the online version of the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo. This work is justified by the continuing academic discussion about the claim based on the idea that the suffix “-ISMO”, as opposed to “-DADE”, contains semantic values linked to pathology, which, directly or indirectly, would express, through discourse, aspects of prejudice and social discrimination. Thus, the proposition of the use of “homossexualidade” instead of “homossexualismo” began to manifest itself as a form of claiming or representing a social identity. This work is based on Lexicology (Zavaglia, 2012; Lara, 2006), Morphology (Gianastacio, 2009; Simões, 2009) and Discourse Analysis (van Dijk, 2005; Charaudeau, 2015). It was possible to observe that the revindication analyzed is legitimated by the arguments of identitarian and ideological aspects of LGBTQIAP+ groups and not by the linguistic aspects, a fact that contributes to the demobilization of hegemonic power discourses which seek to maintain the status quo. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT In this article, we share and problematize an experience of English language education as a space for existence, developed in a 4th-year class of the English Language Teacher Education Program (Letras: Inglês) at the Federal University of Rondonópolis. We start from the understanding of the classroom as a powerful space for the constitution of existences through language education and intertwine three praxiological perspectives: Albán’s (2013) pedagogy of existence, which involves emotion, creativity, and expression without constraints; Souza’s (2011, 2016) literacies of reexistence, which advocate the idea that to reexist is to create new forms of existence consistent with our ever-constructing history; and Jesus’s diary (2014), which materializes a new way of existing, breaking with the “inferno” in which the coloniality of power, being, and knowledge keeps the condemned (Maldonado-Torres, 2018). The classroom research narrated here, which we believe is committed to “the struggles for life” (Guerrero Arias, 2012), consisted of, together with the pre-service teachers, building an understanding of the existence of Carolina Maria de Jesus and discussing creative writing as a way to bear witness to facts (Hoffler, 2020). This process resulted in texts about conflicting events that made the student-teachers exist otherwise in the classroom and demanded from the teacher a new perspective on giving feedback on these texts. |

Artigo original THE CRISIS OF HUMANOCENTRISM AND DISTRIBUTION BEYOND THE ANTHROPOS: POSTHUMANIST PERSPECTIVES Lemes, Renan Monezi Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO Este artigo examina a crise do pensamento humanocêntrico e suas implicações para a concepção de língua(gem) a partir de uma perspectiva pós-humanista. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This article examines the crisis of anthropocentric thought and its implications for the conception of language from a posthumanist perspective. It argues that anthropocentrism, consolidated by Western modernity, has subordinated language to human reason, reducing it to an instrument of organization and control. This instrumental view has contributed to processes of hierarchization and cultural erasure, especially in colonial contexts. As an alternative, the article proposes the emancipation of language, understood as a hybrid and ecological infrastructure that acts and interacts beyond the human domain. Adopting an essayistic and bibliographic approach, the study revisits the historical role of language in anthropocentric thought, highlighting how it has been instrumentalized to reinforce dichotomies between human and non-human, reason and materiality. It also discusses the emergence of a posthumanist ontology, in which language is recognized as an active agent within interaction networks that include humans, machines, and entire ecosystems. The emancipation of language implies an ontological and epistemological revision that (re)considers its materiality, performativity, and capacity to act in hybrid contexts. The study concludes that this approach broadens the horizons for a more inclusive and sustainable science of language, breaking away from the reductionist paradigms of Western modernity. Thus, the article fosters debate on the role of language in an interconnected and posthuman world, promoting new perspectives beyond the centrality of the human. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT In the face of the increasing number of students with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in schools (Roberts; Webster, 2020; Brasil, 2024), the importance and urgency of further research to equip teachers on how to promote a fair learning assessment process for these students is evident. This study is situated within this context, presenting a collection of evaluative actions carried out with students with ID and ASD in an additional language classroom in a special education school. To do so, we draw on theoretical constructs related to characteristics of ASD and ID (Schmidt, 2013, 2017; APA, 2014), aspects related to their learning processes (Alves, 2018; Muniz, 2018; Silva, 2018; Truyts; Bonilha, 2020; Almeida; Tartuci, 2021; Melo; Santos; Souza, 2021), learning assessment (Perrenoud, 1999; Hoffmann, 2004; Luckesi, 2001; 2006; 2011), and the assessment of additional languages in schools (Schlatter; Garcez, 2009; 2012). Subsequently, we share and critically analyze the developed evaluative actions. We conclude that assessments for students with ID and ASD, such as those addressed in this article, require diversification, the use of playful activities, visual resources, and a focus on students’ potential. |

Artigo original COLONIALITY OF LANGUAGE, LOCUS OF ENUNCIATION IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH, AND RACIALIZED DISCOURSES Baptista, Lívia Márcia Tiba Rádis Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO Este estudo visa contribuir para ampliar a inteligibilidade acerca da colonialidade da linguagem (VERONELLI, 2015; 2019; 2021; BAPTISTA, 2019; BAPTISTA, 2022) e possíveis conexões dela com o lócus de enunciação (BAPTISTA, 2019; BAPTISTA, 2021; BAPTISTA, 2022); (ARGÜELLO PARRA, 2016; BERNARDINO-COSTA; GROSFOGUEL, 2016; FIGUEIREDO; GROSFOGUEL, 2010). This work aims to contribute to increasing intelligibility regarding the coloniality of language (VERONELLI, 2015; 2019; 2021; BAPTISTA, 2019; BAPTISTA, 2022) and possible connections between this and the locus of enunciation (BAPTISTA, 2019; BAPTISTA, 2021; BAPTISTA, 2022); (ARGÜELLO PARRA, 2016; BERNARDINO-COSTA; GROSFOGUEL, 2016; FIGUEIREDO; GROSFOGUEL, 2010). To this end, we discuss linguistic hierarchization and coloniality, focusing on the conception of linguistic racialization (CERQUEIRA; CARVALHO, 2022). Next, we focus on the colonization of language (VERONELLI, 2015; 2019; 2021; BAPTISTA, 2019; BAPTISTA, 2022), problematizing how this concept can be reviewed and expanded based on the idea of locus of enunciation. Finally, we present examples that emphasize the importance of the locus of enunciation to discursively expand political, cultural, and aesthetic participation and the inscription in the locus of enunciation for the emergence of another ethos of power and subjectivity in the Global South (GROVOGUI, 2011), in front of racialized discourses (MEDEIROS; VIEIRA, 2019). |

Original article JUDGING BY THE VOICE OR BY THE RACE? Abstract in English: Abstract Previous research shows that speakers are judged more or less favorably on a series of personal qualities depending on their racial background and whether they speak a prestigious or non-prestigious language variety (e.g. Kutlu, 2020). The present study examined how English language teacher trainees (TTs) evaluate high and low prestige English varieties when the speakers and listeners are matched or unmatched for their racial background (BIPOC/White). 51 TTs from public universities across Brazil completed a matched-guise test (Lambert, 1967) where they assessed General American, British, Southern US, South African, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese English (BPEng) speaking women for status and solidarity dimensions. The results showed that standard native varieties were assessed higher on both dimensions, whereas the listeners’ native variety (BPEng) was assessed poorly. Both listener groups (BIPOC and White) evaluated the Black speakers higher in terms of status and solidarity. Discussion offers social desirability bias and post-colonialist awareness as alternative explanations to the findings and calls for a critical reflection on the structure of the English undergraduate teaching programs so that they equip the TTs better for a linguistically and racially plural English classroom. |

Abstract in English: Abstract This study situates itself in the methodology of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) from a sociorhetorical perspective, analyzing the structure and communicative purposes of the full paper work genre in academic conference proceedings. The objective is to present a process of understanding the sociorhetorical approach to genre analysis, focusing on the application of structural writing models. The research is based on Swales (1990; 2004), Wu (2011), and Bhatia (2004; 2017), who explore the structure and rhetoric of academic discourse. The adopted methodology is qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory, utilizing a corpus of eleven full paper works published in the proceedings of the X SIGET (2020). The analysis reveals a strong correspondence between the corpus and the IMRD structural model (Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion), with variations in terminology and occurrence of rhetorical categories. The discussions point to the flexibility of the IMRD and the importance of contextual and textual/discursive rhetorical knowledge in genre production. It is concluded that the IMRD structure, combined with the analysis of communicative purposes, constitutes a tool for understanding the sociorhetorical methodology and for developing pedagogies for academic genres. |

Artigo original THE ITINERARY OF AN EDITORIAL FAILURE: THE ADAPTATIONS OF PORTUGUêS NO COLéGIO (1976-1980) Imbruniz, Cristian Henrique Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo Investigo como, nos arranjos entre instâncias oficiais, comerciais, editoriais e autorais, ocorreram mudanças e permanências na disciplina escolar português. Abstract in English: Abstract I investigate how changes and continuities in the school discipline of Portuguese occurred within the arrangements among official, commercial, editorial, and authorial instances. To do so, I analyze about 40 letters exchanged between Raul Moreira Léllis and various actors of the Companhia Editora Nacional. In the 1960s, Léllis achieved great success with Português no colégio, solidified in the discipline’s memory as a representative of traditional Portuguese teaching. Correspondence between the author and publishers, as well as among the publishers themselves, documents negotiations to reintroduce a previously successful publication, through adaptations, into the emerging school market of the 1970s. These attempts were however unsuccessful. My aim is to trace the itinerary of the failure of a textbook that, for a long time, was considered a success and simultaneously propose, in the field of applied linguistics, a reflection on the role of history as a discipline and historicity as a social phenomenon. As a theoretical-methodological framework, I adopt a discursive approach that acknowledges the materiality of society and history in language and meaning. The results show that even during periods of high print runs, Português no colégio was a failure in success because, tethered to conservative programs, it demonstrated a mismatch between knowledge, content, methods, and new school clienteles. If it achieved significant print runs, it was because there was a growing number of students and because it was published by a company with significant technical-commercial capacity. The success in failure and the doomed attempts at reformulation had different outcomes because they insisted on updating the same arrangement of knowledge, content, and methods that were becoming exhausted, but in distinct socio-historical circumstances. |

Abstract in English: Abstract Theory of Mind (ToM), the ability to understand and attribute mental and emotional states to oneself and others, has been a central focus in cognitive science since the 1980s. While early research predominantly focused on ToM development in infancy, recent studies highlight its continued evolution into later childhood, adolescence, and even adulthood. Second-order ToM, which involves more complex mental reasoning about others’ thoughts and beliefs, typically develops later in childhood and is associated with the maturation of the prefrontal cortex. This article explores the potential for fostering second-order ToM in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms. It outlines three hands-on activities designed to promote second-order ToM, emphasizing the role of ToM in social competence and its connection to interpersonal and professional success. Drawing on the theoretical foundations of the Faux Pas Task and the Strange Stories Task, the proposed activities integrate visual, narrative-based, and interactive-dialogic elements that support both language use and real time mental state reasoning. By incorporating these activities, teachers can support the development of critical social-cognitive skills in school-age children, enhancing their ability to navigate complex social interactions. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT In this article, we problematize the meaning-making construction and ethereal languages that emerge from a multimodal production as part of the Etérea (CRIOLO, 2019b) project proposed by a collective of artists, including Criolo. We also discuss the pedagogical potential of this material for critical language education. Our problematizations intertwine ontoepistemological views that encompass studies on critical interculturality, decoloniality, and intersectionality. In order to discuss the material, we draw on a cartography based on a semiotic rhizomatization, which was constructed from movements of feeling-thinking-praxiologizing-affecting. Our discussions indicate that the multimodal production in question denounces and highlights, in a critical manner, social oppressions related to race and sexuality. Therefore, we note that it has great potential to assist language teachers in promoting problematizations on issues of critical interculturality that can contribute to the fight against the perpetuation of social inequalities. In addition, this study leads us to reflect on how language can favor moving semiotic possibilities across multiple and nonlinear time-spaces by nurturing resistance and re-existence in their pursuit of social justice. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This study intends to reflect on the possibilities to escape the dichotomous logic of European thinking that subordinates subjects and knowledge while promoting mass epistemicide. Considering post-war reality as a turning point, we wish to evade the epistemic occidental pattern as a referential model of knowledge that ensures permanence of an intellectual elite who follows a white canon that is unfit to comprehend the internal dynamics of brazilian society. As such, we propose a bibliographical review based on authors such as Santos (2007), Hall (2019), Ela (2016), and Mbembe (2014), among others that invest in racialization as a way to understand how European’s project of colonization establishes itself as way of domination. It is evident the permanent need of questioning the European model and how it applies the enlightenment knowledge, which will contribute to highlight new voices and to widespread different knowledge. After all, it is unacceptable to think western’s production of knowledge without questioning the investment made in denying the production of knowledge of non-European people. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This article aims to present and discuss acts of curriculum (agencies), in which a group of students, cultural practitioners - faced with the “modern capitalist, colonial/patriarchal world-system”, in its current neoliberal version - joined the anti-racist struggle through formative pedagogical practices in English language classes. This study uses the method of cyber research-training, which embraces the bricolage of cybercultural everyday life by adopting a rigor otherwise in educational researching. Besides, theoretical-methodological approach enabled dialogues between applied, transgressive, and (in)disciplinary linguistics and the insurgency of Global South. Therefore, the research took place in English language classes at a Technological Institute in Pará State, using inventive use of digital technologies, specially the Padlet interface (a cybercultural device), which allowed us to forge a formative device potentially authorial and transgressive in the teaching-learning process. This enabled the emergence of authoritative narratives and insurgent voices of cultural practitioners, who were the subjects of this investigation. In this way, the curriculum acts forged by digital technologies pointed toward transgressive learning practices intertwined with the social, political-pedagogical and (in)disciplinary use of the English language. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This article is about the teaching internship experience conducted during the master’s program in Languages, in which the course “English Language I” was taught to incoming students of the undergraduate course in Languages (Portuguese/ English), at the Federal University of Sergipe. Alongside covering topics outlined in the course syllabus, focusing on the teaching of English, discussions were held on critical race theory and its place in the educational context, through classroom activities based on critical racial literacy and intersectionality (LADSON BILLINGS, 1998; CRENSHAW, 2004; FERREIRA, 2023). So, we examined our practices as educators and the reflections arising from this experience, which broadened our understanding of ethnic-racial issues, their connections with English language education, and the impacts on contemporary social practices, including exchanges of experiences with the students. Thus, this article aims to share reflections arising from the aforementioned experience. It is a qualitative and interpretive study (MOITA LOPES, 1994; SALDAÑA, 2009), focused on the analysis and interpretation of the meanings constructed during the teaching internship, involving reflections from the researchers’ field diary and records of classroom activities (PARDO, 2019; PAIVA, 2019). The analysis follows the strand of Southern studies (SILVA JR; MATOS, 2019; PENNYCOOK; MAKONI, 2020), which advocate for the inclusion of voices from socially marginalized groups. The results of the experience indicate the relevance of building bridges between academic knowledge production and the social practices of marginalized groups in English language education. |

To this end, we conducted a non-participant digital ethnography (BLOMMAERT, 2010; CIBORGA, 2022) between June and November 2023 on the newspaper’s Facebook page. The analysis of the data generated in the ethnographic work allows us to argue about an intense circulation of “colonial linguistic ideologies” in the metalinguistic practices analyzed in the online/offline nexus. In general terms, these ideologies act in the affirmation of nationalist linguistic purism as a linguistic policy of racial sanitization and in dynamics of feminization and sexualization of languages and their speakers as instances of violent linguistic embodiment. These processes erase the invention of languages (MAKONI; PENNYCOOK, 2005) as a technology of domination and Christianization of colonized peoples, since they depreciate the languages, cultures and identities of Brazilian peoples (GONZALEZ, 1984; MUNIZ, 2016) due to a supposed European superiority, legitimizing and updating diffuse discourses of colonial violence, against the backdrop of assimilationist imaginaries disseminated in the transnational rhetoric that Brazil and Portugal were “brother countries”. |

Dossier Language, Race, and the Global South SOUTHERN VOICES: SUBVERSIVE LITERACIES OF MIGRANT WOMEN IN ADULT EDUCATION Martins Neto, Irando Alves Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO O conceito de “letramento ideológico” (STREET, 1984) permite-nos validar todo e qualquer modelo de escrita. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Street’s (1984) concept of “ideological model” advocates for the plural character of literacy, validating all models of writing. From this perspective, marginalized literacy practices are as legitimate as dominant literacy practices, despite being socially stigmatized. In this article, I aim to investigate in what ways the literacy narratives of two adult students transgress social and linguistic norms. I employ a narrative analysis methodology that incorporates the discursive, situated and performative nature of the stories (MOITA LOPES, 2021) I analyze. At the social level, access to reading and writing is, for the students, a subversion of imposed norms that deprived them of the right to education. As women who migrated from the northeast to the southeast of Brazil in search of better living conditions, returning to school and learning to read and write are acts of resistance that challenge the status quo. At the linguistic level, the students reaffirm their enunciative intentions by transgressing the standard norm of the language, expanding the possibilities of meaning in their texts through the subversive use of punctuation and deixis. The outcomes emphasize the need to recognize the students’ literacy journey as a social criticism against insufficient policies on the provision of quality education for all. Furthermore, the outcomes point to the need for language teaching and learning approaches that recognize non-institutionalized models of literacy as valid knowledge that enhances and enriches language learning, minimizing the abyssal line (SANTOS, 2010) between orality and literacy as well as between school and non-school knowledge. |

Dossiê Língua, Raça e o Sul Global TO DISCOVER OTHER WORLDS, NAME THINGS AND (RE)INVENT(OURSELVES): THE PLACE OF LITERATURE IN DECOLONIZING KNOWLEDGES AND SOUTHERNIZING THE INITIAL TEACHER DEVELOPMENT IN MODERN LANGUAGE COURSES Cerdeira, Phelipe de Lima Hibarino, Denise Akemi Abstract in Portuguese: RESUMO Em Cem anos de solidão (1967), a voz narrativa desconstrói a ideia de conceitos prontos, principalmente a visão cristã da palavra-verbo. Abstract in English: ABSTRACT In One hundred years of solitude (1967), the narrative voice deconstructs the idea of ready concepts, particularly, the Christian view of the word-verb. In this novel, the fiction underlines the relation between the perspective of those who see it and the decision to name each thing through the body-word (Freire, 2005). In this perspective, this article discusses how literature constitutes itself as a space for other world’s discoveries (Mignolo, 2003) and territories for the recognition of cultures, identities, knowledge, powers, races, and social inequalities. Concerning to the Applied Linguistics area, it is possible to southernize Gabriel García Márquez’ magic realism, discussing how the literature is developed as a necessary cultural artifact (Certeau, 2000) for the additional languages ‘learningteaching’ context (Alves, 2019). The theoretical background is grounded on the studies of: i) Applied Linguistics (Kleiman, 2013; Rajagopalan, 2003); ii) Decolonial Studies (Castro-Gómez; Grosfoguel, 2007; Quijano, 2014); iii) literature teaching and mediation (Andruetto, 2023; Castillo, 2020; Fleck, 2018; Vallejo, 2020; Cerdeira, 2023, 2024). Methodologically, we analyzed the answers from an online Google Forms questionnaire, focused on two public universities’ Modern Language undergraduate students. The partial outcomes reveal: i) the literary silencing and limitation practices in the Basic Education; ii) the students’ engagement in the readings and the professor’s role; iii) the literature as an agent of transformation. Overall, it is highlighted that the undergraduate students realize their loci of enunciation, recognize the power network that constitute themselves, and legitimize the literary as a way to name other ways of being in the world (Freire, 2005). We hope this study contributes to contemporary society understanding as well as to the initial teacher development challenges. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This work seeks to present an innovative theoretical possibility in relation to studies of linguistic contact with emphasis on ethnic and historical issues and in dialogue with spirituality. The objective is to propose a path of transdisciplinary linguistic analysis and observation, which comprises the necessary scientific deepening between black raciality and language, considering the fundamental pillar to understand the africanity is to conceive their ancestral religiosity. The theoreticalmethodological basis of this study dialogues with the autoethnographic method (Ellis, 2004), with the conception of ritual language and language of saint (Pessoa de Castro, 1980; Bordieu, 1982; Póvoas, 1989) and the contracolonial studies (Bispo, 2015), also called decolonial/decolonial because they have a common basis related to the prominence of looks from the global south. This linguistic perspective is closely related to sociolinguistics, such as sociology of language and ethnolinguistic. However, it advances and differs from these by focusing on the language-spirituality pair, which corresponds nothing to the science of religion, but rather to the intersubjectivity of bodies that share practices and collective representations that remain in resistance, even after humanity’s greatest racial genocide. Thus, by focusing on brazilian afrodiasporic territories (terreiros, quilombos, favelas and samba schools), it will be possible to build a collection of materials for various areas of knowledge, breaking with eurocentric investigative models (cartesian and positivist). Finally, it is expected that these africanist researches of language, in the long term, can minimize the academic racism that exists in science, promoting the heterogeneity of the subjects and being a reference to the promotion of black linguistic-cultural manifestations. |

Abstract in English: Abstract This text explores some concepts believed to be ethically productive in dramatizing the interrelationality of planetary life, in questioning the destructive effects of the anthropocene and our human responsibility for other species. In addition to the Anthropocene and its reformulations, the concepts are sympoiesis (HARAWAY, 2016), intimate cosmology (inspired by Povinelli’s Intimate Grammars) and joint attention (Povinelli, 2023), from the Karrabing manifesto. Based on these conceptual incursions and situated narratives, the text aims to dramatize our relationship with the species that surround us, questioning our ability to detect communicability and our ethical role in this symbolic chain of life. The article is a multi-species ethnography interested in communicational practices in which I interrogate my own home and the species I have discovered as companions, producing an ethical manifesto that disturbs human privilege: sympoiethics, an ethics of doing together. This writing experiment was mediated by multi-species affections, lived in my intimate cosmology, entangled in different fields of knowledge, implicating us in an ethical and attentive experience of ethnographic writing. If ethnography is translation, this narrative can be thought of as a multi-species translation of scientific and mythical ideas about language. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT Based on an exploratory research, we observe here the discursive-narrative risks present in the hegemonic and nonhegemonic media when dealing with current environmental news in Brazil. If, on the one hand, apocalyptic catastrophic bias is lurking when environmental disasters are reported, due to the intensification of climate change and/or the ineffectiveness of responsible sectors, on the other hand, we see aspects of trivialisation, naturalization or denial of ecological problems. Through the concepts of narrative wars and eco-communication, and the instruments of Critical Narrative Analysis, this article identifies the stabilization of catastrophic and denialist media discourses in the country, exposing its most evident discursive marks. However, the investigation results also point to language practices that can be considered decolonial, as they indicate the emergence of a third way of narrative construction, in turn linked to movements to ensure possible futures. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT The current ecological crisis results from centuries of predatory capitalism. However, discourses of the mainstream media and public policies on the climate-environmental emergency insist on neglecting the socio-political conditions that led to the environment destruction. Because they result from colonialism, the consequences of the ongoing climate crisis are unequally experienced by the planet’s inhabitants (UN, 2023) and have threatened breakthroughs in terms of poverty, indignity and malnutrition (CARE, 2024). We understand that physical conditions of bodies - gender, race, ethnicity and disability - define both access to the world and the levels of subalternity and invisibility attributed. In this sense, an isolated environmentalism, a fractured ecology is focused. In this article we want to advocate for linguistic education anchored in decolonial ecology (Ferdinand, 2023), biointeraction (Bispo, 2022), ancestral future (Krenak, 2020) and critical disability studies (Goodley, 2013). Thus, using the call to “bring the body back” (Menezes de Souza, 2020), we want to state the body as the starting point to propose an epistemic shift that thinks over climate emergency based on historically erased bodies. From a female disabled body viewpoint, we seek to scrutinize fractured ecological narratives and white colonial ecology to propose other narratives linked to the necessary reconfiguration to reverse the climate situation we are within. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT In this work, we start from the understanding that one of the most drastic contemporary consequences of colonialism is the radical dualism between reason and nature, which has shaped ideologies, practices, and policies of a humanity alienated from the Earth living organism, and has served as justification for an intense project of nature exhaustion. As constitutive of relations between beings, we also understand that language practices were deeply affected by modern/colonial rationality, having been isolated from life and nature, and subjected to allegedly universal purifying regimes, to serve colonial/nationalist projects of domination. Considering that alternatives to Modernity will not emerge from within Modernity itself, we seek to present trajectories of praxis of intercultural language education, based on experiences co-constructed in the Intercultural Education undergraduate course, at the Federal University of Goiás, grounded in the idea of friction with the Earth. Implemented through a pedagogical internship at an Indigenous school of the Kuikuro people in the Xingu Indigenous Territory, we seek to demonstrate how nature and relationships between beings and the territory form an epistemic matrix, through which communicative resources and practices are reconnected to life, cosmology, and contemporary demands for more sustainable ways of existing that we hope might inspire educational experiences in other times-spaces. |

Dossier Language, decoloniality, and sustainability: decolonizing theories and practices in times of devastation INTEGRATING SUSTAINABILITY INTO PRE-SERVICE LANGUAGE TEACHER EDUCATION: INSIGHTS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TEACHER EDUCATION LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND Althaus, Irene Perrin, Raphaël Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo Diante dos desafios ambientais globais, das desigualdades sociais e das disparidades econômicas, as instituições educacionais do mundo todo se esforçam para alinhar suas práticas com as metas da UNESCO para o desenvolvimento sustentável. Abstract in English: Abstract In the face of global environmental challenges, social inequalities, and economic disparities, educational institutions worldwide strive to align their practices with UNESCO’s goals for sustainable development. For language education, research suggests that fostering multilingualism and transculturalism are crucial competencies for the well-being of diverse communities, as they enhance the ability to understand, tolerate, and negotiate culturally different points of view (de la Fuente, 2022). This article reports on an attempt to promote sustainability within a French and English didactics module at the University of Teacher Education Lucerne, Switzerland. Participants were 46 master’s level pre-service teachers of French or English (or both) at lower secondary level. The goal was to sensitize the participants to the topic of sustainability and to show them ways to consider it in their future teaching. To this end, the topic was addressed in a 90-minute session consisting of theoretical input and practice to explore cultural representations and concepts. At the end of the semester, the topic was revisited using examples of the participants’ projects related to sustainability. Furthermore, familiarity with the topic and relevant concepts were self-evaluated. Results indicate that while the module effectively highlighted the relevance of sustainability in language education, half of the participants felt insufficiently prepared to integrate it into their teaching, citing uncertainties about handling stereotypes and a lack of adequate resources. These findings and the fact that only a few participants established explicit links to the topic of sustainable development in their projects suggest that the subject should be addressed in a more in-depth and more diverse manner in future implementations. |

Abstract in English: Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic emerged not merely as a global health crisis impacting millions, but as a pivotal moment compelling modern Western science to heed insights from the pluriverse (Pratt, 2022). It exacerbated existing challenges, including climate change, dehumanization, structural racism, and extractivism. In response to the adverse effects of neoliberal capitalism, Indigenous thought has gained prominence. My research among Kichwa educators in Ecuador spotlights corazonar-thinking with the heart-as a central guiding principle for living in moral, ethical, political, social, economic, spiritual, and communal spheres. This article utilizes corazonar (Guerrero Arias, 2018; 2012) to delve into the experiences of five Indigenous Kichwa teachers during the pandemic. Corazonar is deeply rooted in Andean cosmology, perceiving life’s cycles as pachakutik (pacha: time, space, and existential meaning, and kutik: transformation). Guerrero Arias characterizes corazonar as sabiduría insurgente, or the insurgent wisdom of the heart, reflecting the struggle for existence under colonizing ideologies. This study examines the teachers’ resilience, resourcefulness, and joy through corazonar’s interwoven elements: spatiality and temporality. Rather than viewing COVID-19 as a dire calamity, the Kichwa teachers perceived it as a human-induced challenge, expecting that a period of scarcity would lead to eventual prosperity. Dossier Language, decoloniality, and sustainability: decolonizing theories and practices in times of devastation PROMOTING INCLUSIVE EDUCATION THROUGH LANGUAGE POLICIES IN NIGERIA AND SOUTH AFRICA: A PATHWAY TO ACHIEVING SDG 4 Aroge, Modupe Grace Makalela, Leketi Merisi, Peter Aroge, Israel Olabode Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo Políticas linguísticas são fundamentais para influenciar os resultados educacionais, a identidade cultural e a coesão da sociedade. This study critically examines the language policies of Nigeria and South Africa, focusing on the 2013 National Policy on Education and the 1996 Language in Education Policy, respectively, to assess their effectiveness in fostering multilingual education. Using a qualitative research approach and purposive sampling, thematic analysis was conducted with Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) software, revealing that while these policies advocate for multilingualism, equity, and cultural preservation, their implementation remains inadequate due to resource constraints, insufficient teacher training, and the dominance of colonial languages. Unlike previous studies that focus on theoretical frameworks, this research highlights the urgent need for pragmatic, context-driven policy execution. The study recommends the establishment of specialized teacher training centers for multilingual instruction, the mandatory integration of local languages in STEM education, and the development of a policy framework that encourages public-private partnerships to fund indigenous language materials. Additionally, it advocates for legislative measures ensuring national examinations accommodate multilingual assessments, thereby reducing the hegemony of colonial languages. These targeted interventions will bridge the gap between policy and practice, ensuring that language policies in South Africa and Nigeria contribute meaningfully to inclusive and equitable education. By adopting these recommendations, both countries can enhance learning outcomes, promote cultural identity, and advance the realization of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4). |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT In higher education, the abstract is usually understood as a genre of scientific dissemination that deals with the content and structure of a given source text in a short paragraph (Motta-Roth and Hendges, 2010). In basic education, although the activities of interpreting, understanding and summarizing texts are very present in the teaching of the most diverse school subjects, students, when entering the university environment, face challenges to fully comply with the particularities of these practices under a new production situation. The objective of this work is to analyze, based on studies of Textual Linguistics, thirty-seven productions of the academic summary genre by students of the Interdisciplinary Higher Education Program (ProFIS) of the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), in the context of the discipline Reading and Production of Academic Texts I. The results demonstrate the process of appropriation of knowledge related, in this case, to the compositional structure and retextualization to fulfill the purpose of the academic summary. These results demand reflection on the teaching of literacies characteristic of academia, especially with regard to the adaptation of new students to the required textual practices. |

Abstract in English: Abstract The Data-Driven Learning (DDL) approach (Johns, 1991; Boulton, 2017; Crosthwaite, 2024) has gained prominence in teaching academic writing in English, particularly for graduate students in universities aiming for internationalization. Compiling a learner corpus based on academic texts from various fields enables the mapping of specific writing difficulties faced by Brazilian authors, allowing for more effective pedagogical interventions. Some studies highlight challenges such as the use of collocations and scientific terminology, revealing the underuse of academic patterns by Brazilian researchers compared to native speakers (Reppen, 2016; Hyland, 2016; Flowerdew, 2019; Frankenberg-Garcia, 2016). A corpus of 906,035 words confirmed this tendency (Pinto et al., 2021), underscoring the need for pedagogical strategies to expand the collocational repertoire of authors of scientific papers. Some academic writing courses were offered at a public university in São Paulo (Kaneko-Marques & Baffi-Bonvino, 2020; Garcia, 2022) where students used Corpus Linguistics tools, such as concordancers and specialized corpora, to identify linguistic patterns and promote researcher autonomy. Workshops in Brazil have demonstrated the effectiveness of these practices (Frankenberg-Garcia et al., 2022), supporting academic writing for international publication. To assess the impact of these pedagogical practices, systematic questionnaires have been used to track students’ perceptions of linguistic patterns and writing difficulties. The combination of corpus tools and student feedback has continuously refined academic writing instruction, establishing DDL as an effective approach for academic training and internationalization. |

Abstract in English: Abstract This report aims to reflect on the organization processes of the Brazilian Academic Writing Corpus (BrAWCorp), a cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional corpus of academic and learner languages that includes productions from three São Paulo state universities and a private univeristy from Minas Gerais. Its design was inspired by ProCorp, an initiative from professors at the University of Campinas and also a learner language corpus. ProCorp’s data stem from freshmen students enrolled in a higher education pilot program, who are undergoing a critical textual transition from their pre-university experience at public schools into academic life. In contrast, BrAWCorp encompasses Portuguese as a foreign language, in its African variety; English as a foreign language; and Libras, the Brazilian Sign Language. Thus, we discuss how this research is situated within Corpus Linguistics and Digital Humanities, how ProCorp emerged and then became a part of BrAWCorp, the main criteria for corpus compilation, and BrAWCorp’s computational system. For researchers, these corpora can contribute to research on Portuguese as a native and foreign language, on first and second language acquisition, on Libras, and on acquisition of academic discourse; for teachers, it provides the tools for a better understanding of learning and literacy processes, which enables improvements when producing materials or preparing pedagogical actions. Further, BrAWCorp can inspire future collaborations with more universities since it is a highly fertile context with great potential for expansion. |

Dossiê Compilação de produções de aprendizes universitários: contribuições para os estudos sobre ensino de escrita EXPLORING TYPES AND ROLES OF FEEDBACK IN ACADEMIC WRITING: AN ANALYSIS OF TEACHING STRATEGIES EMPLOYED IN THE PROFIS PROGRAM AT UNICAMP Palumbo, Renata Carnin, Anderson Sousa, Otília Abstract in Portuguese: Resumo Neste artigo, investigamos o papel do feedback na aprendizagem da escrita acadêmica de estudantes ingressantes no ensino superior. Abstract in English: Abstract In this paper, we investigate the role of feedback in the academic writing development of first-year higher education students. Specifically, we examine the feedback provided in the course Academic Reading and Writing I within the Interdisciplinary Higher Education Program (ProFIS) at Unicamp. Our research addresses the following questions: (i) What types of feedback are given, and what roles and strategies do they play in academic writing instruction? (ii) What are the implications of these findings for educational inclusion and the development of academic literacy practices? The methodology comprises four stages: (a) identifying written production activities recorded in the ProCorp database during the year 2018 that include feedback records; (b) selecting a representative sample of these texts; (c) analyzing the types, functions, and strategies of the feedback provided; and (d) examining these processes and their significance for academic writing instruction. The theoretical framework draws on studies on academic literacies (Lea, 2008; Lea; Street, 2014; Signorini, 2018; Street, 1984) and feedback in writing development (Assis, 2019, 2016; Ellis, 2009; Hyland, 2006; Sommers, 1982). The analysis indicates that feedback plays a strategic and metacognitive role (pragmatic, discursive, textual, and linguistic), contributing to students’ writing improvement and integration into the academic-scientific sphere. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This paper argues about the perceptions of freshmen students regarding academic reading and writing in Brazilian public higher education, considering the challenges posed by the heterogeneity of student profiles and the impacts of the post-pandemic period on learning. Using a qualitative-interpretative approach, we analyzed 140 (a hundred and forty) responses from students in various major programs (Languages and Literature, Psychology, Performing Arts, and Accounting) from two federal universities - one in the Southeast region and the other in the Midwest. These responses were generated through the replication of a diagnostic activity from the ProCorp corpus (UNICAMP). The analysis focused on the answers to the questions: “What are your expectations regarding the reading and writing course?” and “What are your difficulties in the field of academic reading and writing?”; as well as drawings illustrating how students saw themselves at the university. The results showed that academic writing is commonly associated with normative grammar, understood as a technical knowledge that is difficult to access, whose mastery is perceived as a prerequisite for university success. This perception reveals a metapragmatic view of language marked by hegemonic and graphocentric conceptions, which detach writing from its role in scientific practices, and reduce it to a set of formal rules to be mastered. The drawings reinforce this perspective, depicting the university environment as a space of pressure and suffering, although images of the diploma as a symbol of overcoming challenges also emerge. The conclusion is that the act of writing, far from being merely a product, should be conceived as a situated social practice linked to knowledge production, and that the teaching of academic reading and writing at the university must recognize and value the heterogeneity of students and their trajectories. |

This article presents the results of a survey conducted with textual productions of students entering the ProFIS course at Unicamp, from 2012 to 2022, to investigate the use of argumentative operators and other mechanisms of sequential cohesion. For this purpose, 227 productions were analyzed using corpus analysis tools in an exploratory manner, in adaptation to the Data Driven Learning methodology, verifying the frequencies and co-occurrences of argumentative operators, as well as the mechanisms used to establish cohesion between periods, in a comparative manner between the years 2012 and 2022. The results obtained point to a greater diversity of use and repertoire of argumentative operators and argumentative strategies in the productions of the year 2022, compared to those of 2012, which may reflect the influence of writing teaching oriented towards preparation for the Enem exam. On the other hand, the data also points to specific difficulties in textual progression in the 2022 productions, which may indicate that this broader and more diverse use does not necessarily imply a deeper awareness of establishing cohesion, especially in the academic-scientific genre. It is therefore expected that the results can provide contributions that support the academic-scientific literacy practices of teachers and researchers in training at the university, particularly those coming from public schools, as in the case of students in the ProFIS course. |

Abstract in English: ABSTRACT This article presents the results of a study aimed at identifying and describing the conditioning elements of students’ linguistic work in the production of meaning within the academic-scientific literacy practices in which they engage. The analytical material consists of texts produced in a university program designed to promote academic autonomy at a public university in São Paulo, Brazil. These texts are part of the ProCorp archive (Profis Corp) - an anonymous corpus compilation of texts and excerpts generated in the program. The analysis focused specifically on the texts resulting from a diagnostic tool applied to assess students’ reading and writing knowledge during their participation in formative activities. The data was produced and analyzed using concepts from textual linguistics to characterize the students’ stylistic choices, with the aim of observing the axiological processes involved in defining the theme and constructing objects of discourse, in response to the representations of science mobilized by them when reading and writing texts. The results highlight the effects on their stylistic choices of the specific characteristics that students in training attribute to a particular field of knowledge, as well as the associations they make with certain socially distributed representations of scientific practice. The findings suggest the importance, in academic-scientific literacy practices, of using strategies that make the historical and social nature of knowledge and its production visible to students, so that representations of science can be recategorized with attention to their spatially and temporally situated character. |

Abstract in English: Abstract This work presents the development and consolidation of a proposal for teaching the reading and writing of academic texts, which led to the creation of the ProCorp Project-a compilation of texts and excerpts produced by students enrolled in the mandatory first-semester course of the Interdisciplinary Higher Education Program (ProFIS) at Unicamp. Established in 2011 with the goal of expanding social inclusion at the university, ProFIS is a sequential program offering 120 annual spots filled through the national Enem exam, based on the criterion of selecting up to two students per public school in the city of Campinas. This admission policy results in greater heterogeneity in students’ performance in reading and writing activities, including those considered basic to conventional and academic literacy, as the Enem does not mitigate the kinds of differences observed in these students’ performance. Between 2011 and 2020, two pedagogical approaches were consolidated in the courses taught by the author: the first focused on revisiting the concept of argumentative text as taught in public high schools oriented toward the Enem; the second involved reorganizing course activities around genres that functioned as catalysts (Signorini, 2006) for specific literacy practices relevant to the degree programs most pursued by ProFIS students. Abstract in English: Abstract Since the publication of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, proposed by the United Nations in 2015, the term sustainability has gained increasing visibility across various sectors. However, as we write this text - with only six years remaining before the established deadline to achieve these goals - it is evident much remains to be done. This paper, presented in the form of an interview, offers a critical Applied Linguistics perspective on language education for sustainability. The overall aim is to reflect on whether and how we have addressed the SDGs in our research, in theoretical frameworks, and mainly, in language education. The discussion focuses on how decolonial, Indigenous ontoepistemologies inform us on ways we can transform the neoliberal, naturalized perceptions and knowledge into thinking and acting otherwise in a collapsing world. Such perspectives challenge the dualistic views of the Modern European logic that operates through binary, hierarchical concepts such as human/nature, human/nonhuman, reason/affect, materiality/spirituality, thus fostering co-existence and mutual wellbeing. Some key aspects addressed in the conversation are the devastating effects of colonialism, the persistence of linguistic racism, and the importance of delinking from current colonial language traditions while relinking to Indigenous principles and methods. Moreover, as the UNESCO orientations on education for sustainable development are reviewed, concepts such as “dispositions” in place of competences, and learning as lifelong and lifewide are proposed. |
