The first volume was launched in 1997 with two issues. Since 2002, four issues have been published each year. Since that same year, the journal’s administrative office has been hosted by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).
Until 2004, the journal was produced simultaneously in print and digital formats; after that date, it became available exclusively online and free of charge.

In 2008, the journal Ambiente Construído began its migration from a manual article‑processing system to the Electronic Journal Publishing System – SEER/OJS, hosted at UFRGS (www.seer.ufrgs.br). In 2009, the implementation of the full submission, review, editing, and publication workflow in OJS was completed.

In 2011, Ambiente Construído was included in the SciELO collection

Open access is the condition in which the holder of the copyright of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties through an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY ), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, to crawl them for indexing, to use them as data for software, or to use them for any other legal purpose

Our editorial policy is aligned with the guidelines of Open Science, through open access practices and good‑practice standards for editors. Ambiente Construído asks authors to explicitly state the contribution of each author in multi‑authored papers and also encourages the sharing of datasets and other research‑related materials.

The journal encourages the publication of preprints in repositories such as SciELO Preprints.

Authors and reviewers have the option of choosing an open peer review process, with or without the identification of the individuals involved. For authors, this choice is made at the time of submission; for reviewers, it is selected when completing the evaluation form.

All editors involved in the evaluation process are identified in the publication of each article.

The journal requests that authors submit, together with the manuscript, the Open Science compliance form saved as a PDF (form hier).

Ambiente Construído is committed to following ethical conduct at all stages of the publication process. Therefore, authors, editors, the editorial committee, and reviewers all have the duty to maintain ethical best practices.

We always uphold the good practices recommended by DORA (San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment).

The journal considers it unethical to submit an article to more than one journal simultaneously, as well as to publish the same article in more than one journal. Therefore, authors must comply with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Suspected ethical misconduct
Publication in another journal, nonexistent data, authorship without effective participation, plagiarism or self‑plagiarism, ethical issues related to research, and the appropriation of ideas or data by reviewers, among others, are considered cases of suspected ethical misconduct. Accordingly:

• Cases of suspicion will be handled according to COPE guidelines;
• Anyone may report suspected ethical misconduct to the Editorial Committee;
• All reports will be forwarded to the Editorial Committee, and a response will be provided to the complainant.

• Not to have submitted the article to another journal;
• The article must not be published in another journal;
• To inform, at the moment of submission, the CAAE number referring to the approval of the research by the Research Ethics Committee, or the registration number in Plataforma Brazil, in the case of articles derived from research whose data collection is regulated by Resolution 510 of 04/07/2016 of the National Health Council;
• All authors of the article must have effectively contributed to the development of the work, whether in the conception, execution, or interpretation of the article. Acknowledgment of secondary contributions may be made in the Acknowledgments section at the end of the article;
• To omit, at the moment of submission, all data that identify authorship, origin, acknowledgments, funding information, or any other reference that could reveal the authorship of the work;
• To inform the editorial team of any error or incorrect information in their article so that an erratum or retraction may be issued;
• To ensure that all sources used in the production of the article have been properly cited, guaranteeing the originality of the text and the absence of plagiarism or self‑plagiarism.

• The editor is responsible for the initial evaluation, indicating whether the article should proceed to peer review or not, by verifying the relevance of the topic and compliance with the journal’s editorial guidelines. If accepted at this stage, the editor checks whether any identifying information about the authors remains in the text or file, ensuring a double‑blind review, and also checks for originality to prevent the publication of articles that violate academic ethics;
• To exclude articles that contain plagiarism, or that offend political or ideological positions, religious beliefs, gender, or ethnic origin;
• To maintain the ethical standards of the submission and publication process.

Preprints share with journals the originality of manuscript publication and prevent the use of the double‑blind peer review method. We request that the author(s) inform the journal about the use of preprints and adopt the Ambiente Construído submission template when submitting the manuscript

Articles submitted to Ambiente Construído are evaluated through a double-blind peer review system. The editor‑in‑chief is responsible for an initial screening (first screen) to verify the relevance of the subject, compliance with the journal’s editorial guidelines, scientific contribution that is original and unpublished, a theoretical–methodological discussion based on current national and international literature, detailed and consistent methodological procedures, discussion of results based on consistent evidence, and contributions to the scientific knowledge available on the subject.

If the article is approved in this first stage, it is sent to at least two reviewers, with no indication of authorship. To ensure consistency in the evaluation process, the editorial board has developed an evaluation form (insert link to reviewer form) containing recommendations to guide reviewers in preparing their assessment. The area editor‑in‑chief receives the reviewers’ reports and proceeds according to one of the following options a) accept the article for publication, in its current form or with minor revisions; b) reject, based on consistent and justified reports; c) request revisions, with resubmission for a new evaluation by the reviewers. Regardless of the decision, the reviewers’ reports—without identification—are sent in full to the authors.

The editorial board recommends that reviewers examine the following items structure of the article, quality of writing, technical and scientific quality, relevance of the topic, originality of the subject, consistency of the results presented.
The journal publishes, at the end of the article, the name(s) of the editor(s) responsible for its evaluation. It also offers authors and editors the option of direct communication during the evaluation process and the possibility of publishing approval reports, with or without identification of the reviewers.

Ambiente Construído encourages the sharing of research data, instruments, codes, analysis scripts and additional materials when they are not made available within the article itself. Thus, authors are encouraged to deposit these materials in open institutional or thematic repositories. Authors must also provide citation, referencing and a data availability statement when data are reused. Manuscripts must be accompanied by a declaration of availability of the data used and generated in the research underlying the article (e.g., SciELO Data or another appropriate repository).

Approved articles are subject to a publication fee, according to the authors’ membership status in ANTAC:

• When 100% of the authors are members – the fee is waived;
• When at least 50% of the authors are members – the fee is R$ 350.00;
• When less than 50% of the authors are members – the fee is R$ 700.00;
• Articles approved for special issues are exempt from publication fees.

Cases of negligence and misconduct are investigated by the Editorial Board, and when a conflict of interest exists, special attention is given. Therefore, any observation regarding potential conflicts must be communicated to the journal so that the matter can be resolved promptly and transparently.

Editors, reviewers, proofreaders, and any person involved in the editorial process must report cases of possible conflicts of interest, even when they are not yet confirmed

All individuals involved in the editorial process - authors, editors, reviewers, or any other person participating - must disclose any conflict of interest.

Editors may not make decisions on manuscripts that present conflicts of interest with their own activities, such as those submitted by authors from their department or research collaborators.

Any type of conflict of interest must be communicated by reviewers before evaluating the manuscript

Plagiarism is prohibited by Ambiente Construído.

All articles submitted to Ambiente Construído undergo plagiarism detection using the platforms Plagium and CopySpider before the peer‑review process begins.

When plagiarism is identified, even if it involves a passage written by the author themselves without proper citation, the editor informs the author so that the necessary corrections can be made, allowing a new submission.

If any member of the editorial team becomes aware of possible misconduct related to an article published in Ambiente Construído, the responsible editor will follow the COPE guidelines to address the allegations

Authors must submit their articles through the Ambiente Construído website, where all submission steps are indicated. Original and unpublished articles are accepted for publication, necessarily resulting from scientific research in the field known as Technology of the Built Environment, which encompasses the conception, design, production, operation, maintenance, demolition, and recycling or reuse of buildings and their immediate surroundings. Articles may be submitted in Portuguese or English.

Texts consisting solely of a simple literature review, without an original research method or approach, are not accepted. If part of the results has been previously disseminated, the text and its main conclusions must be entirely original and unpublished.

Ambiente Construído encourages and allows the submission of articles previously deposited in recognized preprint servers

Ambiente Construído adopts the CRediT taxonomy. Therefore, all authors must indicate their specific contribution to the manuscript, as requested in the revision file before publication.

As part of the submission process, authors must verify compliance with all the following items. Submissions that do not comply will be returned.

• The contribution is original and unpublished and is not under evaluation by another journal; otherwise, justification must be provided in “Comments to the Editor.”
• Submission files must be in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF, not exceeding 5 MB.
• At submission, authors must provide full names, affiliations, email addresses, and ORCID for all authors.
• Any identifying information must be removed from the file and from Word Properties, ensuring the journal’s double‑blind review process.
• All listed authors must have contributed to the work and agree with the journal’s rules, taking responsibility for the content.
• The manuscript must be formatted according to the template, with figures and tables inserted in the text, not at the end, and with continuously numbered lines (“Layout” → “Line Numbers” → “Continuous”).
• The text must follow the style and bibliographic standards described in the “Information for Authors.”
• Authors must confirm that their research aligns with Open Science practices.
• Upon submission, authors authorize publication if the article is accepted.
• For resubmissions of rejected articles, a Letter to the Editor must be included, detailing the changes made, without any identifying information.

Article Submission Format
Articles may be submitted in Portuguese or English.
A draft of the article must have a maximum of 7,000 words and 5 MB, counting from the introduction of the article to the conclusions. The manuscript must have continuously numbered lines: click “layout” → “line numbers” → “continuous.” The original must be formatted on A4 paper, single spacing, Times New Roman, size 12. Top and left margins must be 3 cm, and bottom and right margins must be 2 cm.
On the first page, the following must appear the title in Portuguese and in English, the resumo and the abstract, and three to six keywords in each language.

Titles and subtitles must not be numbered, and the font formats should follow:

Title 1: Times New Roman, size 14, bold, uppercase.

Title 2: Times New Roman, size 12, bold.
Ex.: Characteristics and appropriation of open spaces
Title 3: Times New Roman, size 12, not bold.
Ex.: Townhouses
After peer review and acceptance, the text editing process begins:

• formatting and normalization (performed by a librarian);
• review by the author(s);
• review by the editor(s)-in-chief;
• final composition in PDF and XML for publication in the system with DOI assignment.

The article must include:

Title: it must be brief (maximum of 15 words), specific and descriptive, containing the keywords that represent the content and, especially, the scientific contribution of the article.

Responsibility Statement: all data identifying the author(s) or the origin of the study must be omitted from the document submitted for evaluation, including metadata in the file properties. All author identification data must be entered only in the fields available during submission in OJS. Each author’s name must be written in full, without abbreviations, with affiliation and ORCID.

Abstract: a 100–200‑word abstract must be included in the language of the article, accompanied by its English translation. The abstract must state the objective and highlight the article’s scientific contributions.

Keywords: after the abstract, three to six keywords must be included to help identify the main subjects addressed.

Article: the article must include an introduction aimed at informing the reader about the topic to be addressed and situating them within the existing body of knowledge. A brief theoretical foundation should be presented, including the main references on which the work is based, necessarily incorporating international literature. The article must provide a clear and objective description of the methodological procedures adopted, allowing the reader to fully understand the method used or to access it through the cited references. A substantial portion of the article should be dedicated to the development of the research and the discussion of the results obtained. It is considered essential that the article contain a concluding section, highlighting the main findings of the research in terms of knowledge production.

Notes: Notes must be indicated using Roman numerals in superscript, placed immediately after the relevant sentence. They must appear at the bottom of the page where they are cited.

Formulas: Formulas must be numbered, inserted, and cited within the text.
Style: the text must be clear, direct, and precise, avoiding overly complex language, excessive adjectives, or long sentences.

Citations and References

References: references for all authors cited directly or indirectly in the body of the article must be provided. These references must comply with NBR 6023:2018 and be listed in alphabetical order.
Works referenced using apud must include the full reference in a footnote on the same page where the citation appears.
Although the standard allows otherwise, the journal cites works with more than three authors by listing only the first author followed by “et al.”. Authors are therefore requested to follow this pattern.
Avoid, whenever possible:

• references used for general background knowledge;
• secondary references (apud);
• excessive references for a single argument;
• predominance of self‑citations.

Tables and charts: these must be accompanied by a caption that allows understanding of the meaning of the data presented. In the text, indicate the number and caption of each table or chart, showing where they should be inserted. Tables and charts must be created directly in the Word document.

Illustrations: clear photographs, figures, and graphics (strictly indispensable for the clarity of the text) may be accepted. They must be indicated in the text by their number and caption, showing where they should be inserted. If the illustrations submitted have already been published, the source and permission for reproduction must be indicated. The illustrations must be referred to as figures. Every figure, illustration, and/or photograph must have minimum resolution of 300 dpi, format .jpg or .png, and must be in color.

Ethics Committee Statement: authors must inform that the research was approved by an institutional ethics committee, providing the approval number.

Funding statement/Acknowledgments: acknowledgments to research funding agencies, institutions other than the author(s)' own, and any mentors or contributors may be included at the end of the article, but only after the article has been accepted, during the text editing stage.
