The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases (BJID) was founded in 1996 with the aim of disseminating original research, reviews, and case reports in the field of infectious diseases, with an emphasis on studies that impact public health in Brazil and the region. Over its trajectory, the journal has established itself as a reference in tropical infection, epidemiology, clinical microbiology, and antimicrobial therapy. Its mission is to promote excellence in scientific communication, contribute to the training of health professionals, and facilitate the translation of scientific knowledge into health policies and practices.

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, track them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.

The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases accepts submission of manuscripts that have been previously deposited in recognized preprint servers. Accepted repositories include bioRxiv, medRxiv, OSF Preprints, Preprints.org, and Zenodo, among others.

Submission of a preprint is not considered prior publication, and manuscripts remain subject to the journal's standard peer review process. It is recommended that the preprint has a persistent identifier (DOI) and is publicly available before submission to the journal.

Authors must indicate the existence of the preprint in the cover letter, including the link and DOI, ensuring transparency about the previously deposited version.

Manuscripts previously deposited as preprints are subject to the same editorial and peer-review process applied to all other manuscripts submitted to BJID. The journal adopts a single-blind peer-review model, in which reviewers’ identities remain confidential. Therefore, manuscripts deposited as preprints are evaluated according to the same criteria applied to all other submissions, including scientific merit, originality, methodological rigor, and relevance to the field of infectious diseases, without any differentiated treatment in the editorial process.

The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases (BJID) adopts a peer review process that can be double-blind. The goal is to ensure scientific rigor, impartiality, and editorial quality.
The evaluation flow follows these steps:

1. Initial editorial screening: Assessment of originality, relevance to the journal's scope, and compliance with submission guidelines.

2. Plagiarism and ethical compliance check: All manuscripts are verified for ethical practices, ethics committee approval (when applicable), and possible plagiarism.

3. Expert review: The manuscript is sent to two or more external reviewers. When the manuscript falls within the expertise of the editor-in-chief or associate editors, they may issue reviews in place of or alongside external reviewers. The average evaluation time is approximately 8 weeks.

4. Receipt of reviews and editorial decision: Based on the reviews received, the editorial decision may be: acceptance, acceptance with minor revisions, major revision, or rejection.

The Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases (BJID) operates a double-anonymized peer review process. Submitted manuscripts are first assessed by the editor for suitability and then typically sent to at least two independent expert reviewers. In this model, authors and reviewers remain anonymous to each other throughout the review process. Final publication decisions are made by the editor.

Authors must deposit data, codes, and materials supporting the study results in a recognized public repository before publication, whenever possible. Repositories may include field-specific databases or general repositories such as Zenodo, Figshare, Dryad, or the Open Science Framework.
If privacy, ethical, or consent-related restrictions prevent public data sharing, authors must provide a clear statement describing how the data can be accessed. A data availability statement must be included in the manuscript, indicating the repository and DOI/identifier, or justifying why data cannot be shared for ethical or legal reasons.

This decision concerns "the sharing of data, codes, methods, and other materials used and resulting from research that generally underlies the texts of articles published by journals."

The journal adopts the Gold Open Access model. Article processing charges (APC) for articles submitted from July 16, 2018: USD 1,600 for original and review articles, and USD 650 for case reports, short communications, images, and letters. Exemptions and 50% discounts for SBI members in good standing.

Errata and Retraction: The journal follows guidelines for investigating misconduct, corrections, errata, and retractions, according to COPE recommendations and SciELO guidelines. Procedures:

• Complaints are evaluated by the editorial team and, if necessary, by an ad hoc committee.

• In case of substantial error, an erratum or addendum is published.

• In proven cases of misconduct, a retraction with detailed explanation is published.

Authors, reviewers, and editors must declare potential conflicts of interest (financial, personal, academic, or otherwise) at the time of manuscript submission or acceptance. Declarations will be published in the article.
Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest can occur when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. Upon submission, authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is a potential conflict of interest, the author(s) must inform it in a signed document attached to the submission platform. The journal uses similarity check software (e.g., iThenticate) for all submissions during initial screening. Manuscripts with a high similarity index will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may be rejected for plagiarism.

The use of generative AI tools (chatbots, writing assistants) is permitted provided it is declared in the Methods or Acknowledgments section. Authors must:

• Explicitly declare the use of any AI tool that contributed to text preparation, data analysis, or figure generation.

• Authors remain responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the content, veracity of results, and scientific interpretations. The journal does not accept attribution of authorship to AI systems.

The journal recommends that authors follow the SAGER guidelines for reporting sex and gender in research. The composition of the editorial board observes gender equity principles.

The editorial team of the Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases, as well as authors publishing in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER Guidelines). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, results, and interpretation of findings. Furthermore, the Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases observes gender equity policy in the composition of its editorial board.

Manuscripts involving research with humans or animals must include a statement of approval from a Research Ethics Committee of the responsible institution, including the opinion or protocol number.
When applicable, authors must state that informed consent was obtained from participants.
It is recommended that authors attach the approval document issued by the ethics committee at the time of submission.

Authors of articles published in the Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases retain the copyright of their works. By submitting and publishing their manuscripts in the journal, authors agree to license them under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.

Authors must describe individual contributions using the CRediT taxonomy, with an explicit statement in the manuscript.

Authors should prepare their manuscripts according to international scientific publication standards, ensuring clarity, integrity, and transparency in research presentation. The manuscript must include title, structured abstract, keywords, introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusions, references, and any relevant supplementary materials. All data must be presented accurately, allowing results to be verified and reproduced by other researchers.

Authors must clearly indicate the relevance and originality of the work, explaining why the research is suitable for publication in the Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases. This includes highlighting the study's contribution to the field of Infectious Diseases, its clinical or scientific impact, and its alignment with the journal's scope.

It is recommended that manuscripts follow applicable international guidelines for the study type:

Additionally, authors must ensure the manuscript is written in clear scientific language, using precise terminology, avoiding redundancies and grammatical errors, and that all figures, tables, and illustrations are legible and properly captioned. The use of units, abbreviations, and nomenclature should follow internationally recognized standards.
