Kriterion is a publication of the Department of Philosophy at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was founded on June 28, 1947, and is the oldest journal in the country in the field of philosophy. Kriterion is published quarterly. Throughout its history, articles in various areas of philosophy and philosophically relevant topics have been published. Its editions are known for their plurality in terms of content, bringing together articles on a wide variety of topics and philosophical approaches. Although the official language of the journal is Portuguese, Kriterion also publishes articles in English, Spanish, Italian, French, and German.

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants rights of use to third parties using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, track them for indexing, pass them on as data to software, or use them for any other legal purpose.

This journal follows the Gold Open Access model.

Kriterion journal offers free and immediate access to all its published content. Kriterion is guided by the principles of democratization of knowledge and the importance of disseminating academic and scientific research.

According to SciELO, preprints from the following servers are acceptable for submission: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv. The acceptance of preprints from other servers will be reviewed by the journal's editors.

All articles published by Kriterion are subject to double-blind peer review.
The final version of the approved article will be published with the name of the editor or editors responsible for the manuscript review process.

Once received, the article is pre-evaluated by the Director and Editorial Board of Kriterion magazine. If deemed appropriate, it will be forwarded to at least two reviewers.

The professionals who act as reviewers for Kriterion are carefully selected experts. Reviewers must complete a standard, objective form. They are given 45 days to issue their opinion. However, since the evaluation process is entirely dependent on the convenience and goodwill of the reviewer, who performs highly skilled and unpaid work, it is not possible to accurately establish a deadline for a final decision on each submission. It should be noted, however, that articles submitted to Kriterion magazine take, on average, three months to receive a final response.
There are three possible final decisions for an article submitted to Kriterion magazine:
1. Approval. This means that no corrections or modifications need to be made to the text. This decision is very rarely applicable to a submission.
2. Revision and Resubmission. This means that the author must make corrections and modifications to the text, according to the comments and requirements of the reviewers and/or the Editorial Board. The article is then submitted to a new round of evaluation. The new version of the article is sent back to the original reviewers for re-evaluation as satisfactory or not. However, there is no guarantee that the article will be approved at the end of this process.
3. Rejection. This means that the evaluation process is complete and the Editorial Board has decided that the article will not be published in Kriterion. This decision is based on the reviewers' evaluations.

For an article to be considered approved for publication in Kriterion, it must obtain at least two positive reviews (i.e., two recommendations for approval). A negative review by one of the reviewers is sufficient for the article to be rejected.
The final version of the article, published in the journal, contains the name of the editor responsible for the peer review.

Manuscripts must be accompanied by a statement of availability of the data used and generated in the research underlying the texts. Research data refers to the content (numerical data, texts, computer programs, images, audio, videos, etc.) used or generated in the research and underlying the texts of the articles organized in files.

Kriterion Magazine does not charge any fees for submission or publication.

With regard to good practices for strengthening ethics in scientific publication, the editorial process, after compliance with the required formal aspects, ensures that all authors review and accept proven responsibility for the content and record each one's contribution at the end of the manuscript.
To promote the originality of texts, the journal uses programs to check for duplication with previously published texts.
Editors and reviewers must prioritize impartiality, integrity, and confidentiality in their evaluation, giving priority to the deadline agreed upon with the journal. When there is doubt or questioning, the editor-in-chief must contact the corresponding editor and/or reviewers.
The fabrication or falsification of data and images is serious misconduct. The evaluation process is thorough in identifying such misconduct.

The journal is open to receiving reports of suspected misconduct (see instructions for authors). If necessary, a committee of editorial board members and individuals external to the journal will be formed to investigate the misconduct.

Articles already published in which misconduct is identified remain indexed in the SciELO database as retracted. The retraction documents the reason for the retraction, duly referenced, upon notification by the author, editor, or other authorized agent, and published in the same journal. The retraction may be partial when the misconduct applies to a specific part of the article, without, however, compromising the published research as a whole. The article will not be “unpublished,” in accordance with SciELO policy. Cases of errors or flaws, regardless of their nature or origin, that do not constitute misconduct, are corrected by means of errata. The journal will publish errata, corrections, or retractions as quickly as possible.

Conflicts of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is a conflict of interest, even if only potential, the author(s) must disclose it in a separate signed document attached to the submission platform. Kriterion uses the “Check for Plagiarism” software to check for plagiarism and similarity in articles before or during the peer review process. The determination of plagiarism implies rejection of the article.

 The use of AI is permitted, in accordance with SciELO policy, provided that the following rules are observed:
- Any and all use or content generated by an AI application must be reported in the abstract and in the methods section or equivalent.
- All material used must be correctly attributed, including complete citations, and the sources cited must support the statements made by the AI application, as it is not uncommon for them to generate references to non-existent works.
- Authors must take public responsibility for their work.
- Authors must be aware that concealing the use and content of AI is an ethical failure that violates the principles of transparency and honesty in research.

The Kriterion editorial team, as well as authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and the results and interpretation of findings. In addition, Kriterion observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board.

Authors must attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research if the philosophical research involves sensitive material that may violate any ethical rules (the use of animals in experiments, for example).

Authors of articles published by Kriterion retain the copyright to their work, licensing it under the Creative Commons Attribution BY 4.0 license, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided that the original work is correctly cited.

•    Unpublished and Original Articles: All articles published by Kriterion are subject to double-blind peer review. Submissions must be prepared by authors for this type of review process. The text must be prepared in ANONYMOUS and IMPERSONAL format, meaning that there should be NO information about the author's identity or any reference that could identify them. The article must be unpublished, both in print and digitally. ‘Digitally’ means an indexed/ISSN article, either in an electronic journal or in conference proceedings.
•    The topic must be relevant and current in the philosophical area of interest of the submitted work. The objectives must be clearly stated, the argumentation solid, and the conclusion must reflect the initial purposes.
• The bibliography must be up to date and demonstrate a thorough knowledge of current research in the field. The main works discussed must be referenced in their original language.
• Contributions that are merely a re-description of results, theses, or ideas from previous publications (by others) will not be accepted.
•    According to SciELO, preprints from the following servers are acceptable for submission: SciELO Preprints, arXiv, bioRxiv, and medRxiv. The acceptance of preprints from other servers will be reviewed by the journal's editors.
• Kriterion does not accept more than one submission from the same author per year, nor does it publish articles by the same author at intervals of less than two years.
• Reviews and translations are not currently published by the journal.

As Kriterion is a philosophical journal, it is understood that the maximum number of authors is two (2), both of whom must actively participate in the entire process of writing the text. Articles with more than two authors will not be accepted.
Authors must be PhDs or PhD candidates.

A work suitable for publication in Kriterion Magazine must have a relevant and current theme in the philosophical area of the submitted work. The objectives must be clearly stated, the argumentation solid, and the conclusion must reflect the initial purposes.
The article must be unpublished, both in print and digitally. By ‘digital’ we mean an indexed/ISSN article, either in an electronic journal or in conference proceedings.
The bibliography must be up to date and demonstrate a thorough knowledge of current research in the field.
The main works discussed must be referenced in their original language.
Contributions that are merely a re-description of results, theses, or ideas from previous publications (by others) will not be accepted.

•    Articles must be submitted via the journal's platform (OJS), preserving anonymity. The following information must be provided:
•    Title
•    English title
•    Abstract in Portuguese and English, or in the language in which it was written, if different from English. Abstracts should be clear, easily readable, and provide the central argument of the text in 200 words.
•    Article length: minimum of 5,000 and maximum of 10,000 words, including abstracts, keywords, and bibliography.
• Languages accepted by the journal are Portuguese, English, Spanish, German, French, and Italian.
•    Keywords in Portuguese and English (between 3 and 6 words)
•    Articles must be in Word (doc; docx) or Rtf format, typed in Times New Roman font (size 12), with 1.5 spacing between lines.
•    Published articles will receive a DOI identification.

Required data to be entered in the journal’s online registration form:
•    Name of the author or authors (when using a compound surname, create a clear identification [uppercase, bold, and/or hyphen]) (Metadata, including the title, abstract, and keywords, must be provided in English when the language of the text is not English).
•    Authors (maximum of two) with full affiliation

•    Authors' email
•    Information on the funding of articles, when applicable, must be provided
•    Where applicable, a statement must be provided stating that the research has been approved by an institutional ethics committee.
•    A conflict of interest statement must be submitted
•    Manuscripts must be accompanied by a statement of availability of the data used and generated in the research underlying the texts. Research data refers to the content (numerical data, texts, computer programs, images, audio, videos, etc.) used or generated in the research and underlying the texts of the articles organized in files.

Tables, charts, figures, illustrations, maps, diagrams, and other digital assets present in the documents must be indicated separately in PDF or Word format for publication in the journal.
No drawing or table may exceed 1/3 of the page, must have a minimum resolution quality of 250 DPI, and show a balance between definition and size.

Suspected misconduct should be reported to the editor-in-chief or another member of the editorial board.

1. Works cited, referred to, mentioned, etc., must comply with the following standards:
References to works (and their details) should, whenever possible, appear in the BODY OF THE TEXT (not in footnotes), according to the following format:
Author followed by date in parentheses. For example:
Comte (1929)
or
(Comte, 1929).
There should be a comma after the date when referring to pagination:
“Foucault (1975, pp. 90-99) announces a kind of decalogue, with which reformers attempt to influence social behaviors in criminal policy with universal  effectiveness.”
or
“Foucault announces a kind of decalogue, with which reformers attempt to influence social behaviors in criminal policy with universal effectiveness.” (Cf. Foucault, 1975, pp. 90-99).

2. Short and long quotations:
Short quotations (up to three lines) may appear in the body of the text, but must always be enclosed in double quotation marks.
Long quotations should be indented, preceded and followed by a line space, and should not be enclosed in quotation marks. Reference information should appear at the end of the quoted text, as in the example:
"Just as commodities are the immediate unit of use value and exchange value, the production process, the process of producing commodities, is the immediate unit of the labor process and the process of valorization. As commodities, that is, as the immediate unit of use value and exchange value, as a result, as a product, they emerge from the process {aus dem prozess herauskommen}, and thus as a constituent element of it.” (Marx, RuP, p. 11).

3. Citations from classic works:
For classic works, authors may use an abbreviation instead of the date. For example, when referring to Karl Marx's “Das Kapital,” one could write “According to Marx (RuP, p. 11) ...”. This should be made clear in the final list of references, as in:

4. Classic works can be cited in the body of the text by their title in quotation marks:
Kant, in “The Critique of Pure Reason,” establishes the difference between synthetic judgments and analytical judgments.

5. Citations from electronic journals should follow the example below:

Quotation marks
Single quotation marks should be used to refer to a word or symbol, as in:
By ‘Cicero’ I mean the man who denounced Catiline.
Double quotation marks should only be used to quote or suggest special uses (irony, etc.).
Please place punctuation marks outside the quotation marks.

Footnotes
To insert notes, footnotes (numbered with Arabic numerals) should be used, but not endnotes. Citations within footnotes follow the above conventions.
Footnotes should not be used for normal citations.

Foreign words
Foreign words should be italicized.

Manuscripts must be accompanied by a statement of availability of the data used and generated in the research underlying the texts. Research data refers to the content (numerical data, texts, computer programs, images, audio, videos, etc.) used or generated in the research and underlying the texts of the articles organized in files.
Manuscripts must be accompanied by a Conflict of Interest statement (if there is a conflict, specify the type).
Manuscripts must be accompanied by a statement of approval from the ethics committee, if applicable.

If applicable, authors must disclose sources of support for the work, including the names of sponsors, contract numbers, and explanations of the role of these sources.
