ABOUT THE JOURNAL

Brief Background

Founded in 1989, OPUS is an annual journal with the aim to widely promote musical knowledge by exploring practical, theoretical, historical, political, cultural and/or interdisciplinary aspects of music while fostering innovative technical perspectives. A scientific journal of the Associação Nacional de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação em Música [National Association for Music Research and Graduate Studies] — ANPPOM — its primary focus is to provide a broad overview of the most representative research on music in Brazil.

Open Access

This journal follows the Open Access model, providing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open Access is the condition where the copyright holder of a scholarly work grants usage rights to others using an open license (Creative Commons Attribution BY 4.0 ) allowing for immediate free access to the work and permitting any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of articles, crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.

Open Science Compliance

This journal follows the Gold Open Access.

Preprints: From vol. 30 (2024) on and as a part of the initiatives to integrate Opus to the Open Science environment, the journal accepts the submission or articles that have been previously published in preprint servers, such as SciELO Preprints. The author(s) must provide this information and inform both the server and the DOI of the preprint in the occasion of the submission of the manuscript.

Open peer review: Authors may choose one or more means to opening the journal peer review process. There are three ways of opening: the first is the publication the name or names of the editors responsible for the evaluation in the final article; the second is to offer reviewers the option of dialoging directly with the corresponding author, whether or not their identities are open; the third is to offer the option of publishing approval opinions for articles with or without the identification of the reviewers.

Open Data: Authors are encouraged to make available previously or at the time of publication all content (data, software codes and other materials) underlying the manuscript text. Exceptions are allowed in cases of legal and ethical issues. The objective is to facilitate the manuscript evaluation and, if approved, contribute to preserving and reusing the contents and research reproducibility. Authors may use the data repository of their institutions, SciELO Data, or chose a data repository at List of repositories for research data deposit (portuguese only).

Ethics in Publication

Everyone involved in the publication process of the Opus journal should follow the guidelines detailed below which are based on the “Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics” – COPE.

Research involving human beings must be in accordance with current research ethics standards.

EDITORIAL POLICY

Preprints

From vol. Manuscripts submitted that have been previously published as preprints will follow the same procedures and criteria as other manuscripts received by the journal.

Peer Review Process

The process of reviewing a manuscript includes a preliminary assessment by the Editorial Board in regard to its relevance to the editorial line of Opus. Then, each article, review (we stress that reviews must have a critical approach and bring new knowledge beyond a simple summary of the work reviewed), or interview is evaluated by two ad hoc reviewers. In the case of a tie, a new review is requested by a third reviewer. To ensure that Opus meets international standards of quality, whenever appropriate and possible, we request that peer reviews be conducted by a Brazilian or foreign specialist based in a Brazilian university, and by a Brazilian or foreigner based in a foreign university.

Authors may choose one or more means to opening the journal peer review process.

Open Data

Authors are encouraged to make available, previously or at the time of publication, all content (data, software codes and other materials) underlying the manuscript text.

Fees

Opus does not charge fees for the submission or publication of the texts, nor for the evaluation, revision or download processes.

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

Opus adopts the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the Guidelines on Best Practices for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publication, by SciELO, as a reference, including issues related to conflicts of interest, plagiarism, manipulation of citations, dissemination of prejudicial opinions, among other. With these guidelines as a base, authors’ responsibilities include:

  • To take full responsibility for the content of their paper;
  • To participate in peer review process;
  • To ensure that all co-authors have made significant contributions to the research, and that there is a full consensus of all co-authors in approving the final version of the paper and its submission for publication;
  • To ensure that the manuscript has not been submitted to more than one publication at a time, and that the manuscript has not been published elsewhere;
  • To ensure that any work or words of other authors, contributors or sources have been appropriately credited and referenced;
  • To notify the journal editors if a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her published work is discovered, and cooperate with them to provide retractions or corrections;
  • To be aware that plagiarism constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.

Opus is engaged in defending the integrity of the literature and publishes Corrections, Expressions of Concerns or Retraction Notes depending on the situation and in accordance with the Retraction Guidelines of COPE (COPE - Retratction Guidelines).

Opus deals with corrections and retractions based on the guidelines and procedures of the following SciELO guielines:

Policy on Conflict of Interest

The conflict of interests may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature. Conflicts of interest may take place between authors, reviewers, or editors.

Everyone involved in the editorial process of a manuscript must communicate the existence of a conflict of interest.

Editors should avoid making decisions about manuscripts that conflict with their own interests, such as those submitted by authors in their department or research collaborators.

Considering the possibility of conflicts of interest, the journal does not publish articles authored by the journal's own editors.

If deputy editors have a conflict of interest, they must delegate decision-making to other editors.

Reviewers must consider any type of conflict of interest before evaluating the manuscript. Working relationships with the author must be considered (e.g. participating or having participated in a research project; maintaining or having maintained scientific collaboration with research groups; having a mentoring relationship with the author; having a financial interest in the project involved in the manuscript).

Adoption of Similarity Software

Opus uses Crossref's Similarity Check software to detect plagiarism in texts submitted to the journal.

All articles are verified during the preliminary evaluation, before they are sent to reviewers.

If plagiarism is detected, the text will be returned to the author, and the process will only continue after the problem is solved. In case of recurrence, the text will be removed from the evaluation process.

Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

Opus does not employ software using Artificial Intelligence resources yet.

Gender and Sex Issues

Opus editorial board, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis and results, and in the interpretation of findings. Furthermore, Opus observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board.

Ethics Committee

Research involving human beings must be in accordance with current research ethics standards.

Authors must include the CAAE (acronym in Portuguese for the Certificate of Presentation for Ethical Consideration) number in the article and attach – as a supplementary document – a declaration of approval from the ethics committee of the institution that is responsible for approval of the research.

Authors of articles published by Opus retain the copyright to their work, licensing it under the Creative Commons Attribution CC BY 4.0 license, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, as long as the original work is correctly cited.

Intellectual Property and Terms of Use

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Types of Documents Accepted

Opus accepts submissions of articles, reviews (we stress that reviews must have a critical approach and bring new knowledge beyond a simple summary of the work reviewed), translations, and interviews that meet the following guidelines.

All articles published in Opus receive a DOI number.

  • Conditions for submission

Manuscripts are to be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish, or English; translations must be in Portuguese.

Submitted manuscripts must be original (not previously published in any Brazilian or foreign periodicals); works presented orally in congresses are considered original; manuscripts that expand upon material that has already been published in conference proceedings must make a statement to this effect on the front page and it will be up to ad hoc referees to assess whether the development of the subject has been sufficient to be considered original. Manuscripts previously made available as preprints on open access servers or repositories, such as SciELO Preprints, are accepted.

At least one of the authors must hold a doctorate degree or is enrolled in a doctoral program at the time of submission.

Manuscripts with more than one author must clearly indicate the contribution of each author (we recommend the CRediT Taxomony). Two minimum criteria of authorship must be observed: a) each author must actively participate in the discussion of the results; b) all authors must revise and approve the final version of the manuscript.

We will not accept concurrent submissions of the same author or from an author who already has another manuscript in the process of evaluation, even as a co-author; works of the same author, even if co-authored, will not be published in subsequent issues of the journal.

Articles must be at least 6,000 words in length, not including pre-textual elements, references, and attachments. Reviews and interviews should be between 2,000 to 4,000 words, not including pre-textual elements, references, and attachments. Essays should be no more than 6000 words, not including pre-textual elements, references, and attachments.

Manuscript Preparation

Article Submission Format

  • Submission process

The works submitted must not contain any type of authorship identification. Once the article has been accepted, the author will then provide their identification information, including their institutional affiliation, area of research, name of advisor and research funding agency (if applicable).

In the case of translations, a copy of the original manuscript must also be sent under separate cover. The author’s Terms of Agreement of the original manuscript must be sent to the Opus journal at the time of submission.

Step 3 of the submission process (metadata) must include the name of each author as it should appear in the article, their e-mails and institution of affiliation, as well as a brief biography of each author of between 100 and 150 words in length containing their main activities in the area.

It is recommended that the author register the Orcid ID number in the system at the time of submission; should the author not have this number, it can be obtained through the following link: https://orcid.org. If there are any difficulties in registering the Orcid number at the manuscript submission, it is advised to register under an http address (instead of https).

  • Format of submissions

Italics are used exclusively for foreign terms and titles of works, both in pre-textual and in-text elements. If there is a need to highlight words or passages, they should be highlighted in bold or placed within quotation marks.

Articles published in Opus begin with a capitular letter, therefore the manuscript should not begin with a subtitle.

In the event the manuscript is subdivided into sections, no more than two numbered subdivisions shall be used (e.g., 1.1, 1.2., etc. may be used, while 1.1.1, 1.2.2., etc. may not be used). Primary headings should be formatted in bold and subheadings without bold. For example: 1. Primary heading / 1.1 Subheading. Quotations of three lines or less should be inserted in the body of the text enclosed within double quotation marks (single quotation marks are used to indicate a quote within a quote), followed by the reference in the “Author-Date” format. For quotations that are more than three lines, highlight the quotation in a block of text indented 4 cm from the left margin separated from the text with a blank space and followed by the reference in the “Author-Date” format (omit quotation marks, font 11, single space). For quotations in a foreign language, the translation is included within the body of the text and the original quote placed in a footnote enclosed in quotation marks and accompanied by the reference.

Footnotes should use Times New Roman 10, single space, and justified.

All illustrations and tables should be referenced in the body of the text by its number (as in our example, Fig. 1). Extensive figures and tables should be placed at the end of the article as an attachment or appendix.

Colored illustrations (.tif or .jpg formats with a resolution of 300 dpi) and audio files (.mp3 format) will be accepted and should be inserted within the body of the text. Video files may be accepted upon request.

Original image files may be requested from authors of articles, reviews, or interviews that have been accepted for publication.
