ABOUT THE JOURNAL

 

Brief Background

 

Pro-Posições is a peer-reviewed journal established in 1990 and published by the School of Education at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). It holds a consolidated position as one of the leading journals in the field of education in Brazil.

 

 

Open Access

 

The journal follows an Open Access model, enabling unrestricted virtual access (including the absence of financial barriers) to all academic texts it publishes.
Pro-Posições adopts the Creative Commons CC-BY international license, which ensures immediate free access to its content and allows any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, index them, import them into software, or use them for any other lawful purpose, provided proper credit is given to the authors.

 

 

Open Science Compliance

 

Pro-Posições is committed to Open Science communication practices.

Authors are required to complete and sign the Open Science Compliance Form provided by SciELO and submit it as a supplementary document during the submission process.

In this form, authors are asked to indicate whether the manuscript is a preprint, whether they agree to open options in the peer review process, and whether the data, software codes, and other materials underlying the manuscript have been properly cited and referenced. 

 

 

Ethics in Publication

 

Pro-Posições adheres to the transparency and good scientific conduct guidelines established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Authors must ensure the originality of their submissions, give proper credit to all data sources, research materials, and intellectual works of any kind used in the text, beyond ensuring that all citations and references are fully and accurately provided. When applicable, authors must declare that the ethical procedures of the research were submitted to and approved by the ethics committee of their institution. Compliance with ethical research practices is the sole responsibility of the authors. Authors are also responsible for obtaining the necessary permissions for the use of images or for the transfer of copyright, when applicable. 

 

 

Focus and Scope

 

Pro-Posições publishes original articles, Book reviews, and essays that contribute to critical reflection on the multiple dimensions of education, drawing on different fields of knowledge and theoretical approaches.

 

 

Digital Preservation

 

Pro-Posições follows the standards established by the SciELO Digital Preservation Policy.

All texts published by the journal are available in the SciELO database, which maintains its own backup and restoration systems. They are also archived by the Publications Department of the School of Education at UNICAMP, which maintains an institutional backup system.

EDITORIAL POLICY

 

Preprints

 

Pro-Posições accepts submissions of articles previously published as preprints, provided they are hosted on servers maintained by public institutions that do not charge authors publication fees.
A preprint is a manuscript ready for submission to a journal and deposited in reputable preprint servers before or in parallel with its submission to a journal.
Preprints share with journals the originality in publication and prevent the use of double-blind peer review.
Open Science Compliance Form, the name of the preprint server and the DOI of the article.

 

 

Peer Review Process

 

The article evaluation process takes place in two stages. In the first stage, the Editorial Committee verifies whether the submission complies with the journal’s editorial policy and scope. Manuscripts approved in the initial screening are then analyzed by two referees whose areas of expertise are related to the topic of the manuscript. Pro-Posições uses a double-blind peer review system, in which the identities of the authors are not disclosed to the reviewers and vice versa—unless one or both parties formally authorize the disclosure of identities, in accordance with open science principles.
For articles originating from preprint servers, the journal adopts a single-blind review system, in which the authors’ identities are visible to the reviewers, but the reviewers’ identities are not disclosed to the authors unless the reviewers choose to identify themselves.
Reviewers may issue one of three recommendations:

  1. acceptance for publication with no suggested changes;
  2. acceptance for publication contingent on revisions (major or minor);
  3. non-recommendation for publication.

In accordance with Open Science guidelines, Pro-Posições offers authors and reviewers the option of direct communication, with identities either disclosed or kept confidential. In the final version of the article, the name and ORCID of the editor responsible for the evaluation process are published.
Reviews and manuscripts submitted to the Miscellany and prose section are evaluated by the Editorial Committee, which follows a main editor peer-review process.

Dossiers are evaluated in three stages. In the first stage, the Editorial Committee assesses the dossier proposal to determine whether the manuscripts it comprises align with the editorial policy and scope of the journal. The second and third stages of evaluation follow the same procedures used for article review.

 

 

Open Data

 

Pro-Posições encourages authors to make available the content underlying their articles (data, software codes, and other materials), either prior to or at the time of publication. Exceptions are allowed in cases involving legal or ethical restrictions. The goal is to facilitate manuscript evaluation and, if the article is approved, to contribute to data preservation, reuse, and research replicability.
For sharing purposes, authors may use their institutions’ repositories or select relevant, certified repositories, such as the Pro-Posições Dataverse on Scielo (https://data.scielo.org/dataverse/brpp), UNICAMP’s Redu repository (https://redu.unicamp.br/), and others listed by SciELO under its catalog of recommended research data repositories.
Depending on the nature of their research, authors may also declare that the data will be made available upon direct request to the authors, or that all data are included in the article itself.

When applicable, the repository in which the data and materials are hosted must be cited in the text in accordance with the Research Data Citation Guide, preferably in the methodological section, and must also be included in the reference list and in the “Research Data Availability” section. Publication Fees

 

Pro-Posições does not charge any fees for publication.

 

 

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

 

Pro-Posições is committed to good publication practices, in accordance with research integrity standards upheld by the scientific community. Editorial decisions are guided by principles of transparency and by internationally recognized best practices in academic publishing, as discussed within the COPE .
Misconduct is understood to include data or image fabrication (creating and reporting invented data or results), data or image falsification (manipulating research materials or processes, altering or omitting data or results), improper authorship, and plagiarism (appropriating another person’s ideas, processes, results, or words without proper credit).
In cases of suspected misconduct, the Editorial Committee will contact the corresponding author and, if necessary, all co-authors to request clarification. If misconduct is confirmed, the journal will notify the authors’ institutions or the funding agencies involved in the development of the research. Manuscripts still under review will be immediately rejected. Published articles in which misconduct is confirmed will remain indexed in the SciELO database, but will figure as “retracted”, accompanied by documentation indicating the reason. Authors will be informed of all procedures.
In cases that do not constitute misconduct, the journal may publish an erratum, retraction, or addendum, following the SciELO guidelines available in the guide for the registration, tagging, and publication of errata, the guide for the registration, tagging, and publication of retractions, and the guide for the registration, tagging, and publication of addenda.
Errata are published when the author(s) or editor identify one or more errors involving information incorrectly included or omitted in the text in good faith (such as a passage of text, table, or figure). The publication of an erratum does not effectively correct the text published on the SciELO website; it only informs readers of the corrections, except in the following cases: document DOI, author’s name, corresponding author information, document section, document title, and author affiliation.
According to SciELO guidelines, errata are not published in the following cases:
• Layout errors that do not result in omitted data;
• Text formatting issues, such as a word that should appear in italics or bold;
• Spelling mistakes that do not affect the meaning of the text, except when they appear in bibliographic data;

 

 

Policy on Conflict of Interest

 

Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that could influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. All authors, editors, and reviewers must declare any conflict of interest related to the research or the manuscript in a signed statement, which must be uploaded to the submission platform.
Pro-Posiçõesadheres to the main guidelines issued by the international and national organizations that serve as references for ethical principles and best practices in scientific publishing, such as the SciELO good practices guide for strengthening ethics in scientific publication and the principles of transparency and best practices in academic publishing recommended by COPE, DOAJ, OASPA, and WAME. Adopting these guidelines helps editors identify potential fraud and unethical publication practices.

 

 

Adoption of Similarity Software

 

To verify similarity in submitted texts, Pro-Posições uses the Turnitin tool before sending manuscripts for peer review and, in cases of acceptance, before publication. If similarity, plagiarism, or self-plagiarism is detected, the manuscript will be immediately rejected.

 

 

Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

 

Pro-Posições advises authors and reviewers who make use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to follow the guide for the use of AI tools and resources.
Permitted uses include improving language and textual clarity, correcting grammar and spelling, assisting with the organization of literature (with critical human oversight), and optimizing figures or tables, provided these tools do not alter scientific data in misleading ways and that their use is properly disclosed.
All content generated or modified by AI must be carefully reviewed, edited, and verified by the authors to ensure its accuracy, the absence of plagiarism (including content produced by the AI itself), and the correct attribution of sources. AI must not be used to produce original scientific conclusions or interpretations. Regarding bibliographic references, responsibility for their accuracy and appropriateness lies solely with the authors; AI tools may be used to assist with formatting, but authors must verify each citation for its existence, truthfulness, and relevance.
It is important to emphasize that any and all use of AI tools or AI-generated content must be disclosed in the submitted manuscript, with a clear description of the specific sections in which AI was used, including the tool’s name and version. Under no circumstances may AI be listed as an author, as responsibility for the content of the text, including its accuracy and integrity, rests solely with the human authors.
Reviewers may use AI tools to assist in editing their own reports (e.g., for grammatical correction). It is strictly prohibited to submit any part of a manuscript under review—including text, data, or figures—to generative AI tools, in order to avoid breaches of confidentiality and potential copyright conflicts.

 

 

Gender and Sex Issues

 

Pro-Posições adopts a sex and gender equity policy in research, following the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. These guidelines comprise a set of principles that inform the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, and the interpretation and presentation of findings.
The journal also adheres to the principles of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA).
’s linguistic diversity, Pro-Posições may publish texts in any Indigenous language of Brazil, in African-origin languages used in Brazil, and in Brazilian Sign Language. The related procedures are detailed in the “languages” section of the Author Guidelines.

 

 

Ethics Committee

 

Pro-Posições requires authors to submit their research to the Ethics Committees of their respective institutions when studies involve human participants. Exceptions apply to works that fall under exemption cases established by CNS Resolution No. 510, of April 7, 2016. This information must be included in a footnote, as described in the “Manuscript Preparation” section.

By publishing in Pro-Posições, authors retain the copyright to their texts without receiving royalties, licensing them under the Creative Commons Attribution BY 4.0 license. This license allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided that the original work is properly cited.
Ideas and opinions expressed in the published articles are the sole responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of Pro-Posições.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

 

Types of Documents Accepted

 

Pro-Posições accepts manuscript submissions in the following sections:

  • Articles: includes articles presenting research results and/or original and relevant reflections for the field.
  • Reviews: accepts book reviews of works published no more than two years prior in Brazil or abroad. Review authors cannot be the authors of the book under review.
  • Miscellany and prose: gathers various types of texts selected by the Editorial Committee (interviews, essays, short narratives, etc.).
  • Thematic dossier: presents a set of articles focused on a single theme. Dossiers may be proposed by the academic community or by the Editorial Committee, with the aim of addressing a topic or issue in greater depth, from different, original, and relevant analytical perspectives (for submission rules, see the section “Submitting a Thematic Dossier Proposal”).
 

 

Languages

 

Pro-Posições accepts submissions in Portuguese, Spanish, and English.
In alignment with DEIA principles and to recognize and celebrate Brazil’s linguistic diversity, the journal also publishes articles in any Indigenous language of Brazil, in African-origin languages used in Brazil, and in Brazilian Sign Language.
To enable the evaluation process, these manuscripts must initially be submitted in one of the journal’s accepted languages (Portuguese, Spanish, or English). If the manuscript is approved, authors may provide a written, oral, or visual-spatial version (in the case of Brazilian Sign Language) in the desired language. This version will be published alongside the version in the submission language.
Spontaneous submissions or articles from thematic dossiers, based on an assessment of their potential international impact, may be selected by the Editorial Committee for an English-language version. Authors of these selected articles are responsible for providing the English version, which must be prepared either by professional translators appointed by the journal or by a translator of the authors’ choice. If authors choose their own translator, they must submit a justification for the selection and provide the translator’s name and contact information.
Authors affiliated with institutions in Portuguese-speaking countries are required to submit their manuscripts in Portuguese.

 

 

Authors' Contribution

 

The journal considers as authors all individuals who contributed to the conception, development, and analysis of the presented data. In the case of a manuscript with multiple authors, the corresponding author must obtain authorization from the co-authors, ensuring they are recognized as such. All authors must be named and linked to the article in the designated field of the submission system. This ensures the article is associated with the authors exclusively via the submission system.
After manuscript approval, the corresponding author must specify each author’s contributions using the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) system. COPE guidelines on text recycling.

 

 

Manuscript Preparation

 

All manuscripts must be submitted exclusively via the SciELO online platform. This procedure applies to both individual articles and those forming part of a dossier for which the initial proposal has already been approved.

Article Submission Format

 

Manuscripts must be submitted following the format provided in the journal’s template.

Manuscript length

  • Articles – 40,000 to 65,000 characters including spaces (including graphs, tables, figures and images, captions, footnotes, and references). Abstracts and their versions in other languages should contain between 700 and 800 characters, including spaces, each.
  • Reviews – 8,000 to 15,000 characters including spaces.

Title and abstracts
All articles must include a title, abstract, and five keywords in the submission language; a title, abstract, and five keywords in English (when the manuscript is not written in English); and a title, abstract, and five keywords in Spanish (or in Portuguese, when the manuscript is not written in Portuguese).
Abstracts should be clear, easily readable, and provide information on the study’s objectives, the methodology used, and results obtained.

DOI registration
All published manuscripts will receive a DOI.

Authorship information
All authors and co-authors must be registered with ORCID (http://orcid.org/) and provide their iDs in the submission form, along with their institutional affiliations.
Pro-Posições establishes a minimum interval of one year between publications for texts authored or co-authored by the same individual.

Anonymity
To ensure anonymous review, all indications of authorship must be removed from the original manuscripts, including the registered user name in the word processor, as well as references and acknowledgments to the original research, ethics committee, or funding agencies. Manuscripts derived from dissertations or theses should not include the title, supervisor, or the institution where they were defended. Acknowledgments must also be removed from the submitted version.
For authors who choose to deposit their manuscript on preprint platforms, anonymization procedures are not required.

Funding, ethics committee, and acknowledgments
Information regarding research funding, as well as details of ethics committee approval from the corresponding institution, when applicable, must be included in footnotes. For texts undergoing anonymized review, only include “Research funded by grant xxx” and “Ethics Committee approval No. xxx.” Once the manuscript is accepted for publication, the full information may be included.
Moreover, during the manuscript preparation stage after acceptance, acknowledgments may be included. These should mention, when applicable, contributions of individuals, groups, or institutions that deserve recognition but do not qualify for authorship.

Cover letter
If desired, authors may submit a cover letter as a supplementary document in the designated field of the submission platform.

Submission of a thematic dossier proposal
Dossier proposals must be submitted by the dossier organizer(s) via e-mail (propedit@unicamp.br) to the Pro-Posições editorial office and must meet the following requirements:

  • Provide the proposed dossier title and abstract; the name, brief CV, and institutional affiliation of the corresponding organizer and co-organizers.
  • Include a list of the manuscripts comprising the dossier, containing: titles and abstracts (maximum 250 words each), author names, institutional affiliations, and brief CVs.
  • Dossiers must be inter-institutional, bringing together, at the time of submission, authors affiliated with at least three different institutions. At least three of the manuscripts must include participation from authors affiliated with non-Brazilian universities. The journal values proposals with authors from diverse geographic regions.
  • The dossier must include a minimum of six and a maximum of 12 articles. The dossier organizers are responsible for preparing an introductory text, in article format, providing a reflection that situates the debate on the topic at a national or international level.

Pro-Posições accepts dossier proposals on a rolling basis.
The evaluation of a dossier proposal takes approximately three months. At the end of this period, the corresponding organizer will receive an e-mail informing them of the outcome and deadlines for submitting the full articles. It is the organizer’s responsibility to ensure that manuscripts are submitted to the journal within the specified timeframe. The publication date depends on the progress and review of submitted manuscripts.
Approval of a dossier proposal does not imply automatic acceptance of the manuscripts it contains. Each manuscript undergoes a specific evaluation, following the peer-review process for articles described in this document. Upon completion of the review, the Editorial Committee may suggest revisions to the manuscript or its removal from the dossier. A removed manuscript may be replaced by another, which will then undergo the same evaluation process. Replacement can only occur if it does not compromise the deadlines agreed upon with the Editorial Committee.
It is the responsibility of the dossier organizer(s) to oversee all stages of its editorial production, acting, whenever requested, as an intermediary between the Editorial Committee and the article authors to address issues related to the text, language editing, image editing, and other relevant matters.

 

 

Digital Assets

 

All figures (tables, charts, graphs, diagrams, flowcharts, photographs, maps, organizational charts, plans, etc.) must be included within the text and accompanied by a title or caption. They must also be uploaded separately, numbered, via the online submission system, in JPG, PNG, or TIFF format, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, and accompanied by authorizations listed in the “Supplementary Documents” section.
Tables, charts, and graphs must be submitted in an editable format (never as images) and accompanied by captions.

Citations and References

 

Authors must follow the rules of the American Psychological Association (APA) (7th edition), as exemplified in the template.

 

 

Supplementary Documents

 
  • Authors must complete and sign the “Open Science Compliance Form,” provided by SciELO, and submit it as a supplementary document during the online submission process: Open Science Compliance Form.
  • Images (diagrams, flowcharts, photographs, maps, organizational charts, plans, etc.) must be submitted in separate numbered files via the online submission system, in JPG, PNG, or TIFF format, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
  • Images used in the manuscript must be accompanied by the following documents during the submission process:
      • For photographs, an image-use authorization must be provided for each person depicted. Photographs of children must include authorization from their legal guardians.
      • All figures not produced by the manuscript’s authors must be accompanied by a copyright transfer authorization for each figure (photographs, tables, graphs, illustrations, museum artworks, book covers, images taken from other works, the internet, or social media, etc.).
 

 

Financing Statement

 

Authors of manuscripts resulting from funded research must indicate, in the appropriate field of the electronic submission form, the full name of the funding agency or agencies, followed by the corresponding grant or contract number(s). If the research was not funded, the following statement must be included: “Research not supported by funding agencies in the public, commercial, or nonprofit sectors.” Only legal entities may be listed. Individuals who provided support for the research may be acknowledged in the “Acknowledgments” section.

 

 

Editorial production

 

Once the evaluation process is completed, approved manuscripts enter the editorial production phase. Authors will receive guidance from the journal’s editorial office regarding procedures for manuscript preparation, bibliographic formatting, language editing, and translation—when the article has been selected for translation. All editing and translation costs are the responsibility of the authors. The journal will recommend professionals for these services and will inform authors of the deadlines to be observed.
