ABOUT THE JOURNAL

 

Brief Background

 

The Revista Brasileira de História (RBH) is an academic journal affiliated with the Brazilian Historical Association (ANPUH). Founded in 1981, its mission is to disseminate relevant and original historical research, consolidating itself as a key reference for historiographical debate in Brazil and for the internationalization of Brazilian scholarship.

Until 1997, RBH was published in print and distributed among ANPUH members. With its inclusion in the SciELO collection, the journal significantly expanded its national and international visibility, while deepening its editorial professionalization.

RBH publishes exclusively original and unpublished research and reflections in the form of articles, thematic dossiers, debates, interviews, and book reviews. Submissions are accepted in Portuguese, Spanish, and English.

RBH fully adopts the Open Access model, ensuring immediate, free, and unrestricted access to all published content, without financial, technical, or legal barriers.

All content is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution License (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, and link to full texts, as well as reuse them for any lawful purpose, provided proper attribution is given.

RBH is dedicated to publishing high-quality historical research that contributes to historiographical debate and promotes international scholarly exchange. Only original and unpublished works are accepted.

Submissions are restricted to PhD holders in History or related fields. PhD candidates may participate as co-authors. Reviews and interviews may also be submitted by MA and PhD students.

EDITORIAL POLICY

 

Preprints

 

RBH endorses Open Science principles regarding manuscripts previously deposited in non-commercial preprint servers (such as SciELO Preprints, SocArXic and Zenodo), provided they are not under simultaneous peer review elsewhere. The corresponding author must inform whether the manuscript is deposited in a preprint server and provide the DOI.

RBH accepts texts derived from theses and dissertations, provided they are formatted as scientific articles and contain a fully original conclusion.

 

 

Peer Review Process

 

The standard form of peer review adopted by RBH is double-blind (double blind peer review), in which the identities of the authors and reviewers remain mutually concealed throughout all stages of the evaluation process.

However, in accordance with the principles of Open Science, RBH provides the possibility that the evaluation may be:

  • single-blind: when the authors authorize, at the time of submission and of their own free will, that their identity be revealed to the reviewer, while the latter remain anonymous;
  • open: when authors and reviewers allow their identities to be revealed to one another.

In the final version of articles approved for publication, the name of the associate editor responsible for overseeing the editorial process of the manuscript will be included. This measure aims to reinforce the principles of transparency, editorial responsibility, and best practices in scientific communication, aligning RBH with international standards of academic publishing.

In cases involving preprints, it is not possible to guarantee the anonymity of authors, and therefore the evaluation may be single-blind or open.

All scientific contributions are reviewed by the editor and by members of the Editorial Board designated for this task, according to the following processes:

  • Initial Review: at this stage, each manuscript is assessed for compliance with RBH’s established guidelines, as well as for similarity checking. If the manuscript does not meet the established standards, it is returned to the authors.
  • Evaluation Process: manuscripts that pass the initial review are assigned to at least two independent reviewers, according to their expertise in the specific field.
  • Reviews: reviewers submit their reports directly in the OJS system. The decision may be “Accept Submission”, “Mandatory Revisions”, “Resubmit for Review”, or “Reject Submission”.
  • In the case of acceptance or rejection, the editor and the editors designated from among the members of the Editorial Board will decide, based on the grounds presented in the reviews, on the approval or rejection of the manuscript. In the case of acceptance, the manuscript will proceed to the editorial process for publication.
  • If the decision is “Mandatory Revisions”, the text will only be approved after revision or after responding to the criticisms made by the reviewers.
  • If the decision is “Resubmit for Review”, the manuscript must be revised and submitted again, after modifications, for peer review.
 

 

Open Data

 

The Revista Brasileira de História recommends that such data be deposited in public and reliable repositories, preferably at the time of manuscript submission or, at the latest, upon publication of the article, in order to promote transparency, traceability, reproducibility, and the reuse of research results. Whenever possible, the use of institutional repositories of the institutions to which at least one of the authors is affiliated is recommended, or, alternatively, other recognized and reliable repositories, in accordance with Open Science best practices and the guidelines of the SciELO Network.

 

 

Fees

 

RBH does not charge submission or publication fees.

 

 

Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy

 

RBH is committed to ethical publication standards and ensures mechanisms that enable the identification of plagiarism, malpractice, fraud, possible ethical violations, and the initiation of procedures. Therefore, we strongly recommend that authors follow the instructions below in manuscripts submitted to the journal:

  • Explicitly reference data acquired, analyzed, and interpreted from other publications;
  • Cite any intellectual content from other authors;
  • Indicate as authors only those who have actively and substantially participated in all stages of the research and writing of the article (as proposed in the authorship section);
  • Do not omit from the list of authors any researcher who was fully involved in the research and writing of the article.
  • We recommend consulting the following materials in case of doubts by authors:
  • Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
  • Basic Guidelines for Integrity in Scientific Activity of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq)

 

In the case of publication of texts that are accused of some ethical violation by the community, the matter will be analyzed and discussed by the Editorial Board, and the following procedures may be adopted:

  • Corrections/errata: in cases of errors or faults, regardless of their nature or origin, that do not constitute misconduct. Errata publications will follow the guidelines of the SciELO Network.
  • Retractions: in cases of identification of ethical deviations in published articles, whether identified by the community, the journal’s editorial team, or by the authors themselves. An analysis of the case will be initiated based on the initial elements presented and identified, always ensuring the full right of response by the authors (all authors must be informed of the concerns). The outcome of the analysis may result in no modification of the article, full retraction, or partial retraction, depending on the case. Retraction publications will follow the guidelines of the SciELO Network.
  • Publication of addendum: when the availability of additional information is beneficial for understanding the text (the addendum does not contradict and/or correct the original text). Addendum publications will follow the guidelines of the SciELO Network.

Practices that violate scientific integrity, such as plagiarism, duplicate publication, and redundant publication, among others, may result in the suspension of authors from publishing in the journal for a period determined by the Editorial Board. Authors will be immediately informed of all stages of this process.

 

 

Policy on Conflict of Interest

 

The public credibility of the journal also depends on how conflicts of interest are managed during manuscript preparation, peer review, and editorial decision-making. Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that, whether apparent or not, may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. Conflicts of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial nature.

When authors submit a manuscript, they are responsible for recognizing and disclosing conflicts/financial support or other types of support that may have influenced their work. Authors must acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the work and any other financial or personal connections related to the research. Contributions of individuals mentioned in the acknowledgments for their assistance in the research must be described, and their consent for publication must be documented.

In this regard, it is mandatory that the authorship of the manuscript declare the existence or absence of conflicts of interest at the time of submission, that the reviewer do the same upon accepting the evaluation of the article content, as well as the Editors before their Editorial Board.

 

 

Adoption of Similarity Software

 

All texts submitted to RBH undergo a similarity-checking procedure. Currently, the software Plagius – Professional Plagiarism Detector 2.7 is used. The verification takes place throughout the evaluation process (including the possibility of more than one verification during the editorial process). Its purpose is to ensure that any use of third-party texts is properly identified in the version to be published, as expected in academic work. If deemed necessary, additional explanations regarding the results of similarity reports will be requested from the authors. In such cases, the Editor-in-Chief, together with the other editors and the Editorial Board, will decide on the appropriate procedures regarding the manuscript, ensuring, at all stages, the full right of response by the authors of the text.

 

 

Adoption of Software Using Artificial Intelligence Resources

 

According to the Proposed guidelines for the use of AI in history journals, a document produced by the Forum of Editors of Journals in the field of History of ANPUH-BRAZIL, any use of artificial intelligence must be disclosed in accordance with ethical principles and good practices in scientific communication. It is understood that concealing the use of content generated through artificial intelligence is an ethical failure that violates the principles of research integrity and devalues human authorship, and may lead to the retraction of the article. It is the responsibility of human authorship to assume public responsibility for their work and to ensure the proper use of technological resources.

  1. Responsibility of authors:

  • Declare the use of AI at the time of submission.
  • Provide information about the sources and studies used in the research and mentioned in the article.
  • Inform about any and all use of content generated by artificial intelligence. The information must be included in the abstract, in the methods section or equivalent (if applicable) and/or in a reference note.
  • Specify the use according to the nature of the contribution

  1. Responsibility of reviewers:

  • With regard to the evaluation of articles, it is carried out by ad hoc reviewers, who are recognized by the journal as authors of their respective reports, even though they remain anonymous. When performing the task of evaluating a manuscript, reviewers may or may not make use of artificial intelligence, which must be reported in the review form. It is important to clarify that the principles of originality and confidentiality of texts must be preserved, which implies that reviewers should avoid sharing them with Artificial Intelligence platforms, since there is no clarity regarding how such platforms may use the materials shared therein.

  1. Responsibility of editors:

  • It is recommended that journals declare in their rules that they make use of AI
  • Provide information on the use of AI and academic search engines, among other tools, aimed at identifying the originality of the article (plagiarism prevention).
  • Provide information on the use of AI in the editorial process, including by reviewers and translators contracted by the journal.
  • Establish clear policies on which types of AI use are acceptable at different stages of the editorial process.
 

 

Gender and Sex Issues

 

The editorial team of the Revista Brasileira de História (RBH), as well as the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that direct the reporting of information on sex and gender in the study design, in data analysis, and in the results and interpretation of findings. In addition, the Revista Brasileira de História observes a gender equity policy in the composition of its editorial board.

 

 

Ethics Committee

 

Authors must attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for approving the research in cases where the research directly involved human beings (such as interviews, application of questionnaires, and other similar cases).

Authors of articles published by the Revista Brasileira de História retain the copyright of their works, assume full responsibility for their content, and license them under Creative Commons Attribution BY 4.0, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided that the original work is properly cited. Authors grant the journal the right of first publication under the CC BY 4.0 License.

All content of the journal and the articles published by the Brazilian Historical Review, except where otherwise specified, are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY license.

Authors of articles published by the Revista Brasileira de História retain the copyright of their works, assume full responsibility for their content, and license them under the Creative Commons Attribution BY 4.0 license, which allows articles to be reused and distributed without restriction, provided that the original work is properly cited.

Authors are permitted and encouraged to deposit their published works in institutional repositories, academic social networks (ResearchGate, Academia.edu), and similar platforms (always providing detailed indexing of the item), provided that the full citation of the version on the journal’s website is included.

RBH follows the Federal Government’s Personal Data Protection Policy. The data provided at the time of submission will be used solely and exclusively for the services provided by this publication and for academic purposes, and will not be made available to third parties.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

DOI (Digital Object Identifier) in published manuscripts

 

All works approved upon their final publication in the Revista Brasileira de História (RBH) will receive their Digital Object Identifier (DOI).

 

 

Types of Documents Accepted

 

The Revista Brasileira de História (RBH) accepts independent articles, thematic dossiers, debate articles, interviews, and reviews, publishing exclusively original and unpublished research and reflections that contribute significantly to the advancement of historiographical knowledge. Submissions written in Portuguese, Spanish, or English are accepted.

In accordance with the principles of Open Science, RBH accepts the submission of manuscripts previously deposited in non-commercial preprint servers — such as SciELO Preprints, SocArXiv, and Zenodo — provided that such texts are not under simultaneous evaluation by another journal. At the time of submission, the corresponding author must inform the existence of the preprint and must indicate the respective DOI.

RBH also accepts texts derived from theses and dissertations, provided that they are presented in the format of a scientific article and fully comply with the journal’s editorial standards. In such cases, it is required that the text, especially the conclusion section, be entirely original and not constitute a mere adaptation or reproduction of excerpts from the original academic work.

 

 

Authors' Contribution

 

Manuscripts with more than one author must mandatorily include all names in the “List of Co-authors” at the time of submission.

Only those researchers who have participated effectively and substantively, even if in different proportions, in the following stages of the work will be considered authors:

  • research, conceptual discussion, and historical analysis;
  • writing of the text, at least one of its parts;
  • final revision of the manuscript.

Whenever an article has more than one author, it will be necessary to specify the contribution of each of them through the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT) standard.

All authors are equally responsible and fully agree with the submitted and/or published content.

RBH recognizes that there may be other relevant forms of participation in the research that underpins the work and/or in the preparation of the text, which do not necessarily constitute authorship. For the proper recognition of these contributions, the journal adopts as reference the criteria established by the Contributor Roles Taxonomy (CRediT).

 

 

Manuscript Preparation

 

Manuscripts must be submitted exclusively through the RBH electronic editorial system. The address is: http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/index/login 

References to authorship must be removed from the text, from footnotes, and from file properties so that there is no information that could identify it. These may eventually be included at the time of article editing. In the case that the author agrees to reveal their identity, this action is unnecessary.

In order to ensure institutional and regional diversity and a plurality of approaches, authors with a scientific article published in the journal must observe a minimum interval of two (2) years before a new submission, counted from the date of publication of the article.

This policy applies to scientific articles published in thematic dossiers or in continuous flow, both in single authorship and co-authorship. Editorials, interviews, reviews, and invited or commemorative texts are excluded from this requirement, at the discretion of the Editorial Board.

Articles submitted in Portuguese must present title, abstract, and keywords in Portuguese and English. Articles submitted in Spanish must present title, abstract, and keywords in Spanish and English. Articles submitted in English must present title, abstract, and keywords in Portuguese and English.

Texts approved after revision must be submitted after review with the changes marked.

The Revista Brasileira de História is not responsible for obtaining copyright for images.

The data of all authors must, mandatorily and accurately, be included in the form at the time of registration in the electronic editorial system, including ORCID.

The Revista Brasileira de História (RBH) accepts the following types of documents:

 

Articles

Articles are understood as unpublished texts that may result from original research, literature review, or critical and opinion-based analysis, provided that they present theoretical grounding and methodological rigor compatible with academic production in the field of History. RBH publishes independent articles, articles included in thematic dossiers, and debate articles.

Articles submitted in continuous flow, as well as those included in dossiers, must have a length between 7,000 and 8,500 words, including spaces, footnotes (limited to 30), and bibliographic references. Manuscripts that do not meet this criterion will not be forwarded for evaluation.

Texts written in Portuguese or Spanish, when approved for publication, may be published in their original version and translated into English, at the discretion of the editor. Likewise, works submitted in English may have their translations published in Portuguese and/or maintain the original version, in the case of unpublished texts, also at the editor’s discretion. Translation and revision costs, when not covered by RBH, will be the responsibility of the authors.

 

Dossiers

RBH publishes periodic calls through which it invites researchers to submit proposals for thematic dossiers. The evaluation of these proposals is the responsibility of the editor and the Editorial Board, who decide on their approval based on the criteria established in the call.

Once approved, the proposals will have their organizers responsible for overseeing, under editorial guidance, the different stages of the dossier’s editorial process. It is the responsibility of the organizers to attract submissions, support the dissemination of the call, write the introductory article, as well as carry out a contextual evaluation of the thematic adequacy of the submitted manuscripts and indicate reviewers.

The participation of organizers as authors of articles in the dossier they organize is prohibited, in accordance with good editorial practices and the principles of academic integrity.

 

RBH Debates

RBH Debates is a section that includes 2 to 3 articles derived from a discussion promoted by the journal based on previously selected themes. Its objective is to maintain a space for reflection on emerging problems in contemporary public spheres that affect, provoke, and challenge the practice of the profession of History. Its themes and invited contributors are defined by the Editorial Board in conjunction with the editor.

Its texts will have a length between 4,000 and 6,000 words, with the Editorial Board responsible for their evaluation and approval.

 

Reviews

The work to be reviewed may have been written in any language and published in any country, provided that it relates to historiographical debates and their interfaces with other fields of knowledge. Texts must have between 2,000 and 4,000 words and may include, at most, 4 images.

Books, films, documentaries, audiovisual products, games, exhibitions, documentary sources, research instruments, or similar materials may be the subject of review, whether unpublished or originally published/released no more than four (4) years prior, both in the case of Brazilian and foreign productions.

A type of review that reassesses the relevance, impact, and current significance of a work published in the last two decades will also be accepted, provided that it offers a critical approach in light of well-situated contemporary debates and issues.

Every review must present an analytical title that indicates to the reader the reviewer’s interpretative approach and must include complete bibliographic references.

Reviews submitted to RBH will be evaluated by ad hoc reviewers, according to criteria of originality, relevance, and argumentative consistency.

The journal will reserve the publication of at least one-third (1/3) of reviews dedicated to works related to the theme of each dossier. In the absence of specific indications by the organizers, reviews received in continuous flow and approved by the Editorial Board will be published.

 

Interviews

Interviews submitted to RBH must include a brief presentation of the interviewee and have the same length as an article. The Editorial Board is responsible for their evaluation and approval.

 

 

Article Submission Format

 
  • RBH accepts unpublished texts written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, which may result from original research, literature review, or even opinion, and must contain between 7,000 and 8,500 words, including notes and bibliographic references. The font must be Arial, size 11, with 1.5 line spacing. Margins must be 2.5 cm and the beginning of paragraphs must maintain an indentation of 1.5. Alignment must be justified. Pagination must not be altered. Words written in a language different from that adopted in the article must be written in italics.
  • Articles written in Portuguese must present title, abstract, and keywords in Portuguese and English. Articles submitted in Spanish must present title, abstract, and keywords in Spanish and English. Articles submitted in English must present title, abstract, and keywords in Portuguese and English.
  • Texts written in Portuguese and Spanish approved for publication may be published in their original version and translated into English, at the discretion of the editor. In the case of works received in English, translations into Portuguese and/or original versions (in the case of unpublished works) will be published, also at the editor’s discretion. Translation and revision costs, when not covered by RBH, will be borne by the authors.
  • Abstracts must be clear, easily readable, and provide a comprehensive summary of the article, highlighting theoretical and methodological aspects, as well as the objectives of the text. The abstract must contain between 100 and 250 words.
  • At the time of submission, three keywords must be provided
  • In the metadata, the names of the authors (when compound surnames, clear identification must be provided) must be included, including full affiliation, authors’ ORCID, corresponding author’s e-mail, and a link confirming academic degree and institutional affiliation, as well as information on article funding. When necessary, include a statement indicating that the research was approved by an institutional ethics committee.
  • It is mandatory to include the title, abstract, and keywords, which must obligatorily have a version in English when the language of the text is different from English.
 

 

Digital Assets

 

Manuscripts and other contributions may contain images, tables, graphs, and charts, and it is mandatory to indicate the respective sources immediately below each inserted element. It is recommended that images (photographs or figures) have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, in order to ensure adequate visual quality in the final published version.

 

 

Citations and References

 

The Revista Brasileira de História (RBH) adopts the standards of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) for citations and bibliographic references, using the author-date system. Citations in the body of the text or in notes must follow the format (Author, year, page), according to ABNT NBR 10520. Complete bibliographic references must be presented at the end of the text, in alphabetical order, including exclusively the works actually cited, in accordance with ABNT NBR 6023.

Specific editorial adjustments of RBH may be applied, respecting the general principles of ABNT standards and good practices in scientific communication in the field of History.

Complete bibliographic references must be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the contributions, according to the following standard. When cited in the text, the work must be indicated in a simplified manner, either in the body of the article or in a note, in the format (Author, year, page). Example: (Holanda, 1936, p. 79). Only works actually cited in the text must be included in the references.

Citations of up to three lines must appear within quotation marks in the body of the text. Those exceeding this limit must be highlighted by means of a left indentation of 4 cm, single line spacing, Arial font size 10, without quotation marks or italics.
