History

On September 19, 1974, some researchers and professors working in the field of Phytopathology and meeting periodically had the initiative to create the Grupo Paulista de Fitopatologia [Phytopathology Group of São Paulo State − GPF]. The decisive meeting was held at the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC), and the first GPF board of directors was formed, including the following members: Jaciro Soave (IAC) – Director, Armando Bergamin Filho (ESALQ/USP) – Vice-Director, Eduardo Feichtenberger (IB-SP) – 1st Secretary, Chukichi Kurozawa (FCA/UNESP) – 2nd Secretary, and Laudelino Carneiro – Treasurer.

The need for a means to disseminate their research led the GPF members to create the journal Summa Phytopathologica. The following professors were elected to compose the editorial committee of the journal: Caio Otávio Nogueira Cardoso, Paulo de Campos Torres de Carvalho, and Ferdinando Galli.

In 2002, the GPF was renamed Associação Paulista de Fitopatologia [Phytopathology Association of São Paulo State – APF]. In 1975, the first issue of Summa Phytopathologica was published. The headquarters of both the journal and the APFare currently located in the municipality of Botucatu.

Mission

Summa Phytopathologica is intended for the continuous publication of original scientific papers in the field of Phytopathology. The subareas of interest include: bacteriology, mycology, virology, nematology, disease control and management, ecology, epidemiology, taxonomy, genetics and resistance, post-harvest diseases, techniques in phytopathology, biological control of diseases, use of molecular techniques, applied nanotechnology, remote sensing, among others.

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including financial restrictions) to all scientific texts published by the journal.

Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties through an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), allowing immediate free access to the work and authorizing any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, track them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.

The journal adopts Open Science practices for its published articles, which primarily aim to make the knowledge generated from scientific research open and accessible to the global scientific community. Besides open access to the published research results, the journal Summa Phytopathologica, in line with the principles of Open Science, makes public the procedures to be adopted by editors, reviewers, and authors regarding issues such as: manuscript review process; record of each author’s contribution to the development of the research in the manuscript; acceptance of data sharing; statement in the manuscript on the availability of supplementary and/or additional data and information about tools for making such data available; publication of the names of the editors responsible for the evaluation and approval of the manuscript; publication of errata when cases of error(s) or failure(s) in a published article are identified, and, similarly, cases of retraction.

In accordance with the purposes of Open Science, the journal Summa Phytopathologica allows the corresponding author, at the time of submission or later, to submit the manuscript preferably to the SciELO Preprints server. The journal also offers authors and reviewers options to make the peer review process open, with or without disclosure of their names. Both the indication of whether the article submission is a preprint and the authorization for name disclosure may be provided by: i) the authors at the time of submission, by attaching to the journal’s submission platform the Open Science compliance form available via the link below, and ii) the review ers when completing the electronic review form on the journal’s evaluation platform.

Summa Phytopathologica adopts the ethical principles established by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), which provides in its guidelines for editors, reviewers, and authors recommendations related to the following aspects: study planning and its ethical approval; rigor in data analysis; definition of research authorship merit; identification of conflicts of interest; rigor in peer review; misconduct; redundant publication; plagiarism, etc.

Publication of original research papers on diseases affecting cultivated plants (agricultural and forestry, native or exotic). Papers may address the etiology, epidemiology and control, or focus on subareas related to the integrated management of phytopathogens, including microbiology, plant physiology, plant nutrition, mathematical modeling, and other relevant areas.

This journal follows the standards defined by the Digital Preservation Policy Program of SciELO. Communication object files are structured in standard formats specific to each type of collection, including XML according to the SciELO Publishing Schema and other schemas, PDF, CSV spreadsheets, Excel spreadsheets, specific database formats, and different formats of images, audio, and video.

Summa Phytopathologica allows free access to published articles, contributing to the rapid dissemination of published research results, providing in a timely manner the necessary scientific support for the development of ongoing research, and greatly increasing the citation of articles. It is emphasized that all articles published in the journal, since the beginning of its indexation in 2006, are available online on the SciELO website (https://www.scielo.br/j/sp), and earlier years are available on the journal’s website (www.summanet.com.br), free of charge.

In accordance with the purposes of Open Science, the journal allows the corresponding author, at the time of article submission or later, to submit the manuscript preferably to the SciELO Preprints server. The indication of whether the article submission is a preprint will be provided by the author at the time of submission by attaching the Open Science compliance form, available via the link below, to the journal’s submission platform.

Form regarding compliance with Open Science

The submitted articles are evaluated by the Editorial Board, and those that do not fit the journal’s publication policy or do not provide relevant scientific contribution are rejected by the Editorial Team based on the criterion of relative relevance. The articles selected in this first stage are sent to three reviewers whose field of expertise is similar to that of the submitted work.

When the paper is published in its final version, it will include the name of the editor and the associate editor responsible for evaluating the article.

Authors are allowed to make their published articles available in institutional or other repositories of their choice.

In case of supplementary research data, the corresponding author must indicate in the manuscript the location, nature, referencing, and a declaration of availability.

The journal Summa Phytopathologica charges a processing fee, currently R$ 400.00 (four hundred Brazilian reais). Updated values and information, as well as payment methods and proof of payment, must be checked on the journal’s website: www.summanet.com.br.

The subjects, data, and concepts presented in this journal are the sole responsibility of the authors. Eventual citation of products and commercial brands does not imply a recommendation for their use by the reviewers/editors responsible for evaluating the article.
Reproduction of published articles is permitted, provided that the source is cited.

Identification of Misconduct

When questions regarding authorship arise, the corresponding author is contacted first, and, if necessary, all authors are contacted. In the event of an impasse, the authors’ affiliated institutions or the funding/supporting agencies involved in the development of the research may be contacted.

Retraction

In cases of retractions, the journal follows the Guide for the Registration, Marking, and Publication of Retractions. A published article in which misconduct has been identified remains indexed in the SciELO database under the status of “retracted.” The retraction documents its reason, duly referenced, through communication from the author or the editor. Retraction may be partial if the misconduct applies to a specific part of the article without compromising the entirety of the published research. The journal will publish retractions as promptly as possible after verification.

Erratum

In cases of errata, the journal follows the Guide for the Registration, Marking, and Publication of Errata. Errors or failures, regardless of their nature or origin, that do not constitute misconduct are corrected through an erratum. After publication, any errors identified by authors or readers, once communicated to the Editorial Board, will be corrected—after proper verification—through an erratum in the next issue of the journal.

The author(s) must declare in the manuscript whether there is any conflict of interest, either financial or of another nature, that may have influenced the preparation or execution of the work. Furthermore, the corresponding author must provide a specific document, signed by all authors, declaring such information and attaching it to the article submission platform.

Similarly, editors and reviewers assigned to evaluate the article must declare that there is no conflict of interest, whether financial, familial (up to the third degree), or of any other nature, that could have influenced the evaluation of the article.

The journal Summa Phytopathologica uses the iThenticate software, a Turnitin tool for journals, and CopySpider (https://copyspider.com.br/main/) for similarity verification in both the first submitted version and the final version of the article. If the similarity percentage exceeds 30%, the manuscript will be returned to the authors for text adjustment. In case of persistent similarity, the work will not be accepted.

Authors should visit the COPE website (http://publicationethics.org), which contains information for authors and editors on research ethics.

Before submission, authors must follow these criteria:

• Articles containing data acquisition, analysis or interpretation from other publications must explicitly cite those sources.
• Articles including a critical review of other authors’ intellectual content must provide proper citation of those authors.
• All authors must meet the criteria for original authorship of the article, and no researcher involved in the study may be omitted from the list of authors.
• Final approval of the article will be given by the editors and the editorial board.

Summa Phytopathologica also uses Turnitin software for AI detection in English texts, in addition to the review by the Editor-in-Chief and associate editors, to avoid false positives.
Authors may conduct literature searches and organize their topics; however, texts written in machine-generated language in its entirety and not belonging to the authors should not be used. Relevant literature should be consulted and cited according to the established rules.

The Editorial Board of Summa Phytopathologica and the authors publishing in the journal must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of recommendations that guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis, results, and interpretation of findings.

Articles addressing studies involving humans or animals, directly or indirectly, in whole or in part, including the handling of information or materials in all areas of knowledge, must state in the Materials and Methods section that the study was previously submitted to, evaluated by, and approved by a competent Ethics Committee. The name of the Committee, the Institution, and the document number CAAE – Certificado de Apresentação de Apreciação Ética [Certificate of Presentation for Ethical Consideration], or an equivalent document, must be included.

Summa Phytopathologicaretain the copyright of their works and license under the Creative Commons Attribution CC-BY 4.0 license, which allows unrestricted reuse and distribution, provided that the original work is properly cited. Authors grant Summa Phytopathologica the right of first publication.

Scope and Policy

Summa Phytopathologica (SP) is a journal dedicated to publishing original research papers in the field of phytopathology. It has been published quarterly since 1975, up to volume 48, and has since transitioned to an online continuous publication model.

The license adopted by the journal for the publication of its articles is the same as that used by SciELO since 2015, namely CC-BY.

All approved papers, upon their final publication in Summa Phytopathologica (SP), will receive their Digital Object Identifier (DOI).

Manuscript Submission

The manuscript must include the full names of all authors (no abbreviations), along with their institutional affiliations and ORCID identifiers. One author must be designated as responsible for correspondence and communication with the Editorial Committee (EC) and the Associate Editor (AE). The institutional name and complete address must appear in the affiliation of the authors of the published work.

A submission fee must be paid (please check the current rates and payment methods at www.summanet.com.br) for manuscript processing.

All manuscripts must be submitted through the SciELO online submission platform (http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/sp/index) in Word format, including all authors' names and affiliations (without abbreviations) in the body of the document. Manuscripts may be written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. Use the descriptors appropriately (rules described below) and include up to five keywords.

1. Scientific Articles – Original and conclusive research papers. Written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. Maximum length: 20 double-spaced pages and up to 30 bibliographic references. The text must include the following sections:

Portuguese: Resumo, Abstract, Introdução, Material e Métodos, Resultados e Discussão, Agradecimentos, Referências Bibliográficas.
English: Abstract (in English), Material and Methods, Results and Discussion, Acknowledgments, References.
Spanish: Resumen (en español), Abstract, Material y Métodos, Resultados y Discusión, Agradecimientos, Referencias Bibliográficas.

2. Reviews – Papers addressing a specific topic, focusing on new concepts, hypotheses, discussions, or promoting the integration of Phytopathology with other sciences, preferably at the request of the Editorial Committee.
Maximum length: 20 double-spaced pages and up to 60 references.
The text must include:

Portuguese: Resumo, Abstract, Texto, Referências Bibliográficas.
English: Abstract (in English), Text, References.
Spanish: Resumen (en español), Abstract, Texto, Referencias Bibliográficas

3. Scientific Notes – Short, original research reports of recent findings of interest for rapid dissemination.
Maximum length: 6 double-spaced pages, 1 table and 1 figure, and up to 10 references.
The text must include:

Portuguese: Resumo, Abstract, Texto, Agradecimentos, Referências Bibliográficas.
English: Abstract (in English), Text, Acknowledgments, References.
Spanish: Resumen (en español), Abstract, Texto, Agradecimientos, Referencias Bibliográficas.

4. Technical Notes – Reports on new techniques, products, or patents. The text must include Resumo, Abstract, Text (without section divisions), References.
Maximum length: 6 double-spaced pages, 1 table and 1 figure, and up to 10 references.
The text must include:

Portuguese: Resumo, Abstract, Texto, Agradecimentos, Referências Bibliográficas.
English: Abstract (in English), Text, Acknowledgments, References.
Spanish: Resumen (en español), Abstract, Texto, Agradecimientos, Referencias Bibliográficas.

5. Communications – Brief reports of original and recent scientific findings of interest for rapid publication, in the following categories:

a) Confirmation of a new disease or pathogen. If reporting the first detection in the country, a technical report from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply authorizing disclosure must be included.
b) Results of disease control tests (chemical or biological), provided they are not limited to in vitro studies. The text must include: Title, Resumo (in Portuguese), Title in English, and Abstract (without section divisions), limited to a maximum of two pages, and one figure or table, using numerical in-text citations in parentheses and a full reference list at the end.

6. Letter to the Editor – A document submitted for publication addressing a relevant topic, containing suggestions or points for discussion. Bibliographic citations should be included in the text (in parentheses) and listed in full at the end. Replies may also be published when appropriate.

Descriptors

Scientific names must follow Latin binomial nomenclature, and both the genus and species must be written in full. The author (descriptor) should be cited the first time the name appears in the text. In subsequent mentions, the genus name may abbreviated.

Example: Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Sacc. on first mention, and C. gloeosporioides thereafter.

Viruses must be designated by their species names (according to the ICTV – International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses), in Latin binomials, followed by acronyms in parentheses.

Example: Begomovirus costai (BGMV).
Molecular weight should be expressed as Daltons (Da) or Kilodaltons (KDa).
Metric system: use L (liter), mL (milliliter), μL (microliter). Do not use ppm (parts per million); instead, use μg/mL. Do not use “ton.” (tonnes); use megagrams.
Time units: seconds (s), minutes (min), and hours (h).
Temperature units: expressed as degrees Celsius, e.g., 25 °C.
Chemical products: always use technical (active ingredient) names in lowercase letters.

Conceptualization: Formulation or development of research ideas, objectives, and overarching goals.
Data Curation: Management of activities for annotating (producing metadata), cleaning, and maintaining research data (including program codes when required to interpret the data) for initial use and later reuse.
Formal Analysis: Application of statistical, mathematical, computational, or other formal techniques to analyze or synthesize study data.
Funding Acquisition: Securing financial support for the project leading to this publication.
Investigation: Conducting the research and investigation process, specifically performing experiments or collecting data/evidence.
Methodology: Development or design of methodology; creation of models.
Project Administration: Responsibility for management and coordination for research planning and execution.
Resources: Provision of study materials, reagents, samples, patients, laboratory animals, instruments, computational resources, or other analytical tools.
Software: Programming, software development, computer program design; implementation of code and supporting algorithms; testing of existing code components.
Supervision: Leadership and oversight responsibility for the research activity planning and execution, including external mentorship for the core team.
Validation: Verification, as part of the activity or separately, of the reproducibility or replication of results/experiments and other research outcomes.
Visualization: Preparation, creation, and/or presentation of the published work, specifically data visualization/presentation.
Writing – Original Draft: Preparation, creation, and/or presentation of the published work, specifically the initial draft (including substantive translation).
Writing – Review & Editing: Preparation, creation, and/or presentation of the published work by members of the original research group, including critical review, commetary, or revision — at pre- or post-publication stages.

Authors submitting manuscripts must always:

• Observe authorship criteria, including only researchers who participated in the study and excluding names of those not involved in the work.
• Properly cite and reference all data and interpretations from other publications.
• Report any conflicts of interest for all authors.
• Disclose all funding sources.
• Submit only unpublished texts not presented to other journals, ensuring data reliability and authenticity.
• Submit retractions or corrections of errors when necessary.

In-Text Citations

a) References should be cited numerically. When authors’ names appear as part of the sentence, only initials should be capitalized, followed by the reference number in parentheses. Example: Figueiredo (6).
b) For papers with more than two authors, only the first author should be cited followed by et al.; for two authors, their names should be connected with an ampersand (&). Example: Figueiredo & Coutinho (7).
c) Personal communications should be cited as a footnote, including the informant’s name and the month and year of the communication.
d) When multiple citations occur, they should be listed in ascending numerical order (6, 7, 18).
e) Leading zeros should not be used in reference numbering.

All manuscripts must be typed on A4 paper (210 × 297 mm), double-spaced, with 3 cm margins, and lines and pages numbered. The font must be Times New Roman, size 12.
At the end of Resumo and Abstract, authors must include additional keywords (no more than five), different from those used in the title.

Tables, figures, drawings, photographs, and graphs must be presented separately at the end of the manuscript. The insertion point within the text should indicate: “Insert Figure 1,” “Insert Table 1,” etc.

Table titles must appear above the table, while figure captions must be placed below the figure—both spanning the full width. The words Figure and Table, along with their respective numbers, must be written in bold. Notes (numbers, letters, and symbols) used in tables and figures must be no smaller than size 10. Graphs must have a white background and borders.

Photographs and photographic compositions must be provided in JPEG format at 600 dpi resolution.

Since its inception in 1975, Summa Phytopathologica has adopted a mixed ABNT referencing system: references are listed in alphabetical order and numbered at the end of the text, while only the numerical citation appears within the text. The formats are as follows:

Proofs

After the necessary corrections by the authors, editing, and first printing, a copy of the manuscript will be sent to the corresponding author for proofreading (final text revision). The author shall mark the corrections in red ink and return the document to the Editorial Committee (EC) within five business days.
