DIALOGUES IN TRANSLATION: AUGUSTO DE CAMPOS E MACHADO DE ASSIS

Abstract

This article demonstrates that it is possible to find common procedures both in Augusto de Campos and in Machado de Assis when it comes to the choices they made when translating cantos from the Divine Comedy, by Dante Alighieri, showing that the translation-art, term coined by Augusto de Campos, was also practiced by the nineteenth century write. It is also aimed at broadening the understanding we have of Machado de Assis as a translator, by exposing translation procedures adopted at the end of his life as a translator in the text that is, perhaps, his master-piece in translation.
