Live Broadcasts in the Legislative and Judiciary

ABSTRACT

This article discusses how live broadcasting affects the institutional performance of Brazilian legislatures and Constitutional Court. In order to do so, we draw from two broader research projects, based on semi-structured interviews with members of each branch and the observation of their live broadcasts. The article has four sections: on the first one, we discuss how the demands for transparency and openness impact the institutions and impel them to foster their public exposure; then, we focus on the implementation of live broadcasts on each power; on the third section, we analyze different uses and languages developed by the Legislative and the Judiciary branches on their live broadcasts; finally, we discuss how the influence of the public opinion impacts the relationship among the Powers in Brazil nowadays.
