Gramscian Intellectuals, Translation and Politics in “Pasado y Presente” and “Presença”

Abstract

Gathering Gramscian intellectuals from the communist parties, the journals Pasado y Presente (1963-1965/1973) and Presença (1983-1992) sought to offer a space for critical elaboration of the dilemmas posed by the crisis contexts in which they were located, autonomously from party leaders. Despite the hiatus of two decades that separate them, both share the fact of rethinking the history of their countries based on historical-cultural analogies promoted by Gramscian categories and by mobilizing these same categories, modifying their original meaning. Using as empirical sources the texts of its main writers, José Aricó and Luiz Werneck Vianna, this article aims to assess the reach of its results in the face of the shared challenge of theoretical-political renewal. The intention is to contribute to the reflection about the conditions of theoretical production in peripheral national contexts, based on the translations of Gramsci’s work.
