EDITORIAL
In the current Brazilian conjuncture, there is a consensus in which two keywords development and energy are strongly connected. However, the agreement expressed in this equation is not apparent when one seeks for specific solutions. When making strategic decisions, one imposes a prickly question: What energy sources to prioritize?
Fundamental issues related to this question will then rise: How can one conciliate high income, accessible costs, respect for workers and environmental protection? Which paths to take in order to avoid serious risks, especially irreversible ones?
Due to the complexity of the question, the editorship of ESTUDOS AVANÇADOS has chosen to organize the Energy Dossier in such a way as to present, side by side, the various proposed solutions and highlight their positive and negative aspects.
A glance at the summary will confirm how broad the spectrum is. Besides more general texts, hydroelectric and nuclear generations have also been contemplated, as well as the use of gas, ethanol and biodiesel. The main motivation of the proposals is to face disturbing energy consumption standards based on fossil sources, which are notoriously pollutant and suspicious of causing the greenhouse effect.
On the next issues, we expect to approach the possibilities of solar and wind energies both promising ones due to the climate conditions of our country.
Texts related to relevant scientific and humanistic themes also integrate this edition. The interview with Nelson Pereira dos Santos aims at expressing his inestimable contribution to Brazilian cinema.
