Information literacy for use of open data: trends and perspectives

Abstract

The production of data, as well as its availability on digital platforms in open formats, is a movement known as Open Data, which has gained momentum in recent years and refers to data from various domains, with particular emphasis on those arising from governmental activities and those produced in research. Authors have alerted to the problem of lack of skills among users and the general public for effective use of open data. Seeking to understand what the literature says about Information Literacy in practices involving open data, a systematic literature review was conducted, covering interdisciplinary perspectives, utilizing the Web of Science database for data collection. Two main research trends were identified: one investigating open data as a pedagogical element in educational research; and the other discussing the skills associated with practices involving Open Data. This work presents an analysis of articles comprising the second group. Since the description of the skills necessary for the use of Open Data is not consolidated in the literature, this study contributes to the understanding of competence in Open Data in various contexts.
