Literary mediation in brazilian federal academic libraries

Abstract

University libraries are social institutions linked to universities, which have a social responsibility not only to science but to society as a whole. Given this, there are countless challenges and problems posed to both universities and libraries, such as, for example, the low reading rates of the Brazilian people. After all, does the university library have anything to do with this? We believe so, which is why literary mediation is the object of study in this article, which aims to observe the existence of projects on the websites of central libraries, linked to Brazilian federal universities. The research is considered descriptive and documentary in nature. Literary mediation involves literature, readers, and mediators who may or may not be librarians, in a complex process of collective elaboration of meanings and their forms of sharing. The results from the research demonstrate a reduced number of projects, the most powerful for the implementation of literary mediations being reading clubs and the creation of specific spaces. Therefore, literary mediations are an action to be developed or supported by university libraries so that the social, cultural, and formative function of subjects can be strengthened by public institutions that provide services to the academic community, and in general.
