Challenge for the sustainable management of biodiversity in Brazil

Abstract

The establishment of the Convention on Biological Diversity, in 1992, imposed to the country the necessity to argue and to implement a series of politic-institucional arrangements adjusted to the sustainable management of biodiversity. This task, still in course, not only aims to answer positively the CBD, but also to consolidate a project that takes in account the national necessities. In this article, we present a discussion on three distinct basic dimensions to the process of full sustainable management of biodiversity in Brazil: the scientific dimension (to know biodiversity), the politic dimension (to manage biodiversity) and the social dimension (to distribute the benefits deriving of the use of biodiversity). The intention is to remark some of the advances in Brazil in recent years as well as indicate the challenges to be faced in the present and in the future.
