The Importance of Nematodes for Marine Ecosystems

Abstract

Nematodes are one of the most abundant groups in nature. They live in different habitats, may be parasites of animals and plants or free-living in soils and water as well. For a long period of time, the studies related to this zoological group were restricted to parasite forms because of their importance for medicine and agriculture. It might be attributed to the reduced size of free-living nematodes, as the majority of marine species are microscopic making complex their study. Nevertheless, it has been changed recently through the growth of the importance of this group in marine ecosystems according this current review.
