A CODE FOR THE HISTORY OF EDUCATION: POSTURES AS SOURCE AND OBJECT

ABSTRACT

The Codes of Postures or Municipal Postures gained prominence after the Imperial Law of October 1, 1828, which reordered standards present since the colonial period, in order to discipline the Municipal Councils, subordinating them to the determinations of the Provincial Legislative Assemblies. Thus, we find in the Municipal Postures the expression of the ideals of civility, modernity, and order; the definition of what belonged to the public spaces and to the homes; the punishments provided for those who did not comply with the established rules. We obtained access to the Municipal Ordinances that dealt with aspects related to instruction and schooling, especially in the Code of the Rio de Janeiro municipality of Iguassú. We also verified that the use of Posture Codes as a source and/or object is scarce, both in historiography and in historiography of education, and we hope to contribute to make this possibility visible.
