Great challenges ahead

Grandes desafios futuros

Since the beginning of 2013, the "Journal of Coloproctology" (JCOL) has been going through many changes in order to become a respected international journal. First steps were taken in the past with a huge effort from our former editor-in-chief, Eduardo de Paula Vieira, such as, adopting English as the main language, creating a new title and the inclusion of the journal in many citation databases of peer-reviewed literature (SciELO, Scopus and Lilacs). However, we are not stopping there. We have undergone a period of transition in the early months of this current year and we are adapting our journal to many international standards. The editorial board has been updated and new coeditors have been on board including doctors Claudio Coy, Rodrigo Perez and Paulo Kotze.

In the first edition of 2013, we have started a new partnership with a new publisher. Elsevier is the world's leading provider of science and health information, serving more than 30 million scientists, students and health professionals worldwide. In this spirit of modernity, we have designed a new cover to highlight original articles in JCOL as well as a new interior layout design.

JCOL has also introduced an internet-based journal tool (EES) for manuscript submission, review and tracking process. Authors and reviewers can access it from anywhere in the world and works on multiple platforms by navigating to the journal home page and clicking the online submission link (http://ees.elsevier.com/jcol). Manuscript status can be viewed online at any time, and authors may read and respond to reviewer comments as well as submit revisions online. Reviewers can submit their suggestions online and follow the final decisions by the editors. EES will facilitate the publication process and will shorten the time from submission to acceptance.

Nonetheless, we have great challenges ahead. We will need to increase the amount of original articles, reduce the case reports and publish more updated review articles. Currently, JCOL is an open access journal and our publisher performs translations from Portuguese to English without any additional cost to the authors. Another important change includes an extra fee to readers and members of the Brazilian Society of Coloproctology who wants to receive printed issues of the journal. The preference for an online journal can optimize costs and it will allow us to publish multimedia articles and videos very soon as part of our table of contents, sharing new surgical techniques, developing surgical science and improving the continuing medical education.

As the new JCOL's editor-in-chief, I hope you enjoy this new version of the official Brazilian journal and help us to accomplish our goals, providing more benefits and advances for the coloproctologists.

André da Luz Moreira Editor-in-Chief Journal of Coloproctology
