Abstract
Between 1863 and 1872, Machado was greatly preoccupied with poetry, and tried to establish relationships with poets from Hispanic America through his work as a critic in the press. He received books directly from some authors, but the poets who were closer, diplomats in Rio de Janeiro, received most of his attention. Romanticism in full-swing, the young Machado translated a few of these poems. This article addresses this subject through the concept of "complementary asynchrony", derived from Borges's idea of "deliberate anachronism," and seeks to examine how the controversy between American and Spanish literary languages came to bear upon Machado's own aesthetic ideas.
