Abstract
Based on the study of passages from the works of Joaquim Manuel de Macedo, José de Alencar and Machado de Assis, this essay looks into the connections between characters, clothing and eroticism, thereby enabling a better understanding of the literary personality of these three important Brazilian novelists from the second half of the nineteenth century.
