Democratization of Psychology Councils: A Collective Achievement

Abstract:

This study addresses the history of the process it calls the democratization of Psychology Councils that, in a way, affected all of psychology. The history this study describes refers to the movement from the professional category of psychologists, who, from 1989 onward, began to debate and build new references for psychology entities, especially Professional Councils, led by the CFP management. This research also describes this democratization process in its interrelation with the development of the social commitment project, which generated new rules and dynamics for the Councils and new possibilities for understanding the social role of psychology. This study reports the actions the regional and federal Psychology Councils developed, in the studied period, highlighting some of their axes: human rights, public policies, efforts to overcome colonized thinking, organization of psychology, and the first Exhibition of Practices in Psychology: psychology and commitment social, treated here as the greatest symbol of democratization.
