We begin 2006 with excellent news; Pró-Fono is being indexed in SciELO. Besides our international indexation in PubMed/MEDLINE - International C- we are now also National A. It is without a doubt another great gain, obtained by the effort of our authors and our tireless editorial group.

The page of SciELO on the internet has still not been updated with the new indexations; soon we will finally have the satisfaction of seeing the first Brazilian Speech-Language and Hearing Journal indexed in the Scientific Electronic Library Online. SciELO is an electronic library formed by a highly selected group of Brazilian scientific journals. SciELO is supported by FAPESP (Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo) in collaboration with BIREME (Centro Latino-Americano e do Caribe de Informação em Ciências da Saúde) and with CNPq (Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico). The purpose of the project SciELO is the development of a common methodology for the preparation, storage, dissemination and assessment of the scientific production in an electronic format.

We have a lot of work ahead of us. In this first number of 2006 we have 12 articles, all of which were carefully analyzed and reanalyzed by our reviewers.

Jardini & Souza (2006) present an intervention proposal for the acquisition and rehabilitation of reading and writing using a speech-visual-articulatory method. They present as a result the expressive development of the participants (with dyslexia) in a short period of time. This study is an important contribution in terms of pointing the importance of control and use of specific methodology in the Speech-Language and Hearing Science.

The use of the Sonar System (Sistema Sonar) in the behavioral hearing assessment of infants was the theme of the research of Nakamura, Lima & Gonçalves (2006). The authors consider that this technique presents trustworthy results, and should be expanded to other groups in the population.

The study of the medial olivocochlear system by the suppression effect of the transient evoked otoacoustic emissions formulated by Durante & Carvallo (2006), concluded that the magnitude of the suppression of the TEOAE decreased from birth to sixths months of age.

Nogushi, Assis & Malaquias (2006) presented an epidemiologic study about the occurrence of child abuse and the possible pertinent actions of speech-language pathologists.

The research of Knobel & Sanches (2006) had as a purpose to determine reference values for loudness discomfort level in normal individuals. Among other results, the study concluded that individuals with normal hearing presented LDL between 86 and 98dB HL.

Costa & Iório (2006) presented a comparative study about the benefits of non-linear amplification, for speech recognition, in individuals with sensorineural hearing loss. The results indicate that there is no difference in the performance of individuals users of linear hearing aids and non-linear hearing aids, in objective and subjective speech tests.

The Boston naming test was used by Mansur, Radanovic, Araújo, Taquemori & Greco (2006) to assess the influence of age and literacy in the naming ability of 133 normal individuals. Literacy was identified as the variable that most influenced performance.

Bezerra & Iório (2006) concluded that noise does not determine alterations in the contraction activity of the stapedius muscle. The level of discomfort is modified by the exposure to occupational noise, being mostly observed in individuals exposed to noise.

The calculus of the impact factor of scientific journals of the Speech-Language and Hearing Science is a challenge not only in national but also in international terms. Campanatti-Ostiz & Andrade (2006) developed a study investigating the national situation and pointing that Brazilian researchers refer very little to other Brazilian studies that have the same theme as what is being investigated.

Birkman & Cunha (2006) present a two case study related to language and psychism, with the history of several hospital enrollments and early surgery interventions. The authors present a profound discussion about the implications brought by the lack of compatibility between the development of body scheme and the process of subjectivism.

Cardoso & Fernandes (2006) evaluated five adolescents with autism, during a year, in specific communicative situations. The study concluded that a relationship exists between the development in the social cognitive performance and in the functional communication profile in terms of communicative acts per minute. Also the authors state that changes in both performances can be considered to have an interconnection but are non-linear.

The study of method proposed by Máster, De Biase, Chiari & Pedrosa (2006) was based on the long-term average spectrum with the purpose of describing an objective assessment for voice quality. The aim of the study was to present the possibilities of this method. The conclusion was positive for its clinical application.

Claudia
