Dear Readers,

The electronic editing project of our Journal will be finalized in 2007. With this the submission and analyses process of manuscripts, and answers will be more agile. To produce an accessible science is more than just the recovery of information produced in articles; it is also to have a global and systematic view of science in order to make rational and informed decisions.

The continuum editorial adaptation of Pró-Fono has always been one of the issues on our plans. With our persistency, the Journal has reached very important indexations; as life does not stop, for this year, or no more than next, new editorial policies will be introduced. A first idea is:

1. Research articles (quantitative and qualitative) should be elaborated in a more objective and reduced format (maximum of 10 pages). The introduction section should have no more than 1 page; it should refer to the exact content of the study and should contain national and international references (exclusively of indexed journals, preferably in ISI). The emphasis of the articles should be on the methodology and on the results, with detailed descriptions and containing clear and consecrated statistical analyses (for quantitative studies). Only necessary Figures will be accepted and Graphs that reproduce the results already shown on Tables will not be accepted. The discussion and conclusion should be synthetic and base don the results of the study;

2. Quantitative research with statistical analyses will continue to be the axis of the Journal;

3. Qualitative research will be well accepted, once we understand their importance and relevance to science. Although different designs exist for the development of qualitative research, the four more traditional forms will be prioritized, being: bibliographic, phenomenological; ethnographic and case studies.

These are a few ideas that we would like to share with you, these ideas will be better discussed and published in due time. In our first Number of 2007, thirteen articles are presented; twelve research articles and one literature review.

Bianchini et al. (2007) presented a research that aimed to investigate, through the analyses of computerized electrongnathography, the mandibular movements involved in speech of individuals with and without temporomandibular disorders. The results indicate that the presence of tempomandibular disorders has as a result the reduction The presence of temporomandibular dysfunctions causes reduction in the values of maximum mandibular opening and a reduction in both mandibular opening speed and mandibular closing speed during speech

A study about dysphonia was presented by Kasama & Brasolotto (2007). The authors verified if dysphonia has interference in the life quality of individuals, not only in term of vocal self-perception but also in the perception members of the community have about the vocal pleasantness of these individuals. The study indicated that the results of self-perception (worse) are not related to the perception listeners have about vocal quality.

Castro et al. (2007) assessed the association between the gestational age (IG) of preterm infants with normal global motor development and with early signs of sensory oral motor development delay, verifying a possible association between them. The authors concluded that the gestational age of infants at birth influenced the sensory oral motor and global motor development, indicating that infants with lower gestational ages presented worse performances.

The study of Amorim & Almeida (2007) had as a purpose to characterize the short-term benefits presented by adults, recent users of hearing aids, through objective (functional gain) and subjective (self-evaluation questionnaires) procedures, and to study the phenomenon of acclimatization based on the analysis of the speech recognition percent index (SRPI). The results suggest that short-term benefits are obtained with the use of hearing aids. However, the phenomenon of acclimatization, verified through the SRPI, was not observed.

The purpose of the research presented by Hage et al. (2007) was to analyze the pragmatic abilities profile in preschool children, verifying if significant differences exist between these abilities and the socioeconomic level of the children. According to the results, the analyzes of the conversational abilities of the children revealed that they respond/maintain the conversation instead of initiating it, the most prevalent communicative function was the informative, utterances are verbal, mostly coherent and simple. Regarding the sociolinguistic aspects, the results indicate that these can interfere in the pragmatic abilities of children of different socioeconomic level.

Drent & Pinto (2007) verified the occurrence of feeding/eating disorders in patients with Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) determined by the 24-H esophageal pH monitoring evaluation. The conclusion of the study was that children with GERD present a higher prevalence of behavioral and stomathognatic feeding/eating problems when compared to healthy children.

Mota et al. (2007) analyzed changes in the phonological system of children with phonological disorders, comparing variables such as the number of acquired phonemes, the number of sounds in the phonetic inventory and altered distinctive features, before and after therapy. Besides that, the authors investigated if these differences occurred due to the application of different therapeutic models. The results do not indicate statistically significant differences between the tested models of therapy, observing that all models were effective in the treatment of children with phonological disorders.

The investigation of the effects of sound amplification, obtained with the use of hearing aids, on the communicative modalities of parents when interacting with their deaf children was the purpose of the study presented by Couto & Lichtig (2007). The results indicate that hearing parents tend to use more turn-takings during communication in the auditory-oral modality to gain children's attention, to transmit and to end tasks, since they observe an improvement in the auditory skills of their children.

Fortes et al. (2007) verified the hearing behavior of temporal resolution in children with ages from five to six years, who were born preterm, with no evidence of neurological alterations, comparing this behavior with that observed in children of the same age, who were born at term, with low risk for developmental disorders. The results point that preterm children differ from those born at term regarding the hearing behavior of temporal resolution, indicating that the Random Gap Detection Test can be used as a tool to evaluate the hearing process.

The cultural adaptation of the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) for application in the Brazilian population was the purpose of the study presented by Castro et al. (2007). The authors concluded that the Brazilian DHI is a reliable tool to evaluate the impact of dizziness on life quality.

The purpose of the study of Miguel et al. (2007) was to verify whether patients with submucous cleft palate, who were considered as asymptomatic on a perceptual speech evaluation, presented absence of hypernasality and adequate velopharyngeal closure on an instrumental assessment. The results indicate the importance of the combined use of perceptual and instrumental assessments for the diagnosis of velopharyngeal dysfunction in cases of submucous cleft palate. The periodical follow-up of these asymptomatic cases is recommended.

Reis & Iório (2007) presented a research with the purpose of studying the P300 individuals with congenital sensorioneural hearing loss, according to the variables of gender, age and hearing loss level. The results indicate significant differences of wave latency related to age and hearing loss level.

Finally, the review of the literature presented by Silva (2007), critically analyzes the efficacy of therapy in the rehabilitation of oropharyngeal dysphagia. The review points that non-randomized studies have compromised the results of the researches, once the presented casuistic are very heterogeneous, including neurogenic and mechanical oropharyngeal dyshagia caused by different etiologies. Besides that, therapeutic programs which are used are not sufficiently described, compromising the reproduction of the methodology by other researchers.

Good work, regards,

Claudia
