Dear Readers,

This editorial is different. In this editorial I want to share with you my satisfaction and honor of having been indicated by the Deliberative Council (DC) of the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq/MCT) as the new representing person of the area (MS - Physical Education, Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy) for the composition of the Assistance Committee (AC).

The Assistance Committees are composed by more than 300 researchers, members and substitutes, who are selected according to their field of knowledge and action. They are periodically chosen by the Deliberative Council (DC) after having consulted the national scientific-technological community. These Committees, among other things, are responsible for making decisions about the merit of individual applications for grants and research grants. These decisions are based on criteria established by the ACs which are available for the knowledge of all at CNPq's website (www.cnpq.br/cas/ca-ms.htm).

The ACs represent the interface between CNPq's administration and the scientific and technological community. Our AC, besides ourselves, involves the areas of Physical Education, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy. The representing person for the area of Physical Education is Prof. Go Tani (USP) and for the areas of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy is Prof. Helenice Jane Cote Gil Coury (USFSCar). Substitutes of the area are professors Paulo de Tarso Veras Farinatti (UERJ); Marisa Cotta Mancini (UFMG) and Leslie Piccolotto Ferreira (PUCSP). Our first representing person was Prof. Maria Cecília Bevilacqua who worked a lot for the consolidation of our position in CNPq.

As I write this editorial, end of July, no meeting has been scheduled by the new AC. I have, as always, a strong compromise with ethics and respect for the work and development of the Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences. I hope, along the next three years, to bring new information about the formation of human resources; grant for research; partnerships; technology/extension/information; international cooperation and other actions regarding CNPq.

For the third number of Pró-Fono Revista de Atualização Científica 2007, ten articles are presented, nine of which are research articles and one a review of the literature.

Neiva and Leone (2007) present a research that had as a purpose to analyze the development of the sucking rhythm, in non-nutritive and nutritive sucking in 95 preterm newborns, as a consequence of non-nutritive sucking stimulation and in terms of corrected gestational age. The conclusion of the study indicates that the stimulation of non-nutritive suction in preterm newborns did not modify the post-natal development of sucking rhythm. The process of maturation, represented by the corrected gestational age, was considered the most determinant factor for this process.

A study about the national scientific production was presented by Munhoz et al. (2007), having as a purpose to analyze part of the production of the Brazilian Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences on written language, between the years of 1980 and 2004. Results indicate an ascending growth of publications on this particular theme, pointing to the implement of researches on this field of the Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences.

Murphy and Schochat (2007) compared the development of 27 children in different auditory processing tests, according to different temporal variables such as inter-stimulus interval, stimuli duration and type of task (discrimination or ordering). The conclusion of the study was that temporal variables such stimuli duration and type of task (discrimination and ordering) can interfere in the performance of children in tests of auditory temporal processing.

The purpose of the research presented by Pereira et al. (2007) was to verify the prevalence of auditory alterations in 1696 hospital records of newborns of Hospital São Paulo (hospital), observing if there are any correlations with the following variables: birth weight, gestational age, relation weight/gestational age and risk factors for hearing loss. According to the results, hearing loss had a higher occurrence in preterm infants who remained in the ICU. Gestational age and birth weight were important variables related to the possibility of failure in the hearing screening test. A correlation was observed between the presence of a syndrome and sensorineural hearing loss in infants who were born at term.

The study of Silva et al. (2007) had as a purpose to verify the relationship between the symptomatology severity levels of temporomandibular dysfunction and vocal production in 24 females. According to the results it was possible to verify that the severity level caused a decrease in loudness, an increase of noise and alterations in voice resonance, interfering in the vocal quality of the individuals of this study.

The study of Machado et al. (2007) had as a purpose to analyze in normal Brazilian adults the interference of literacy through the performance in a semantic test. The study concluded that it was possible to observe that low literacy levels had a negative influence on the performance presented in tasks involving semantic knowledge, judgment of traces and naming, particularly when involving animated pictures.

The text presented by Moret et al. (2007) verified the hearing and oral language performance of 60 children with pre-lingual bilateral profound sensory neural hearing impairment, users of multi-channel cochlear implant. The conclusion of the study was that cochlear implant as a form of treatment for children with pre-lingual sensory-neural hearing impairment is highly effective, although complex, owing to the interaction of variables which interfere in the implanted child's performance.

In the study of Oliveira et al. (2007), the purpose was to verify the presence of indicative aspects of early facial aging and to characterize the measurements of the projection of the nasogeniane fold to the tragus and of the face width in 60 adults divided in two groups, mouth breathing and nose breathing individuals. The study concluded that there were higher indications of early facial aging in the group of mouth breathing individuals.

Gindri et al. (2007) verified the relationship between working memory, phonological awareness and spelling hypothesis in 40 pre-school children and 50 first graders of public schools. The conclusion of the study was that the performance of working memory, phonological awareness and spelling level are inter-related, as well as being related to chronological age, development and scholarity.

Finally, in the review of the literature presented by Van Borsel et al. (2007), the discussion about factors that should be taken into account when considering the use of delayed auditory feedback (DAF) in clients with stuttering is proposed. Four types of factors are presented: factors inherent to the client; factors outside the client; possible side-effects; and others namely cosmetics, finances, and the long-term effect. The review shows that most likely multiple factors play a role, but with the currently available data it is very hard to predict whether a given individual will or will not benefit from the use of DAF.

Regards,

Claudia
