Between anacondas and white-lipped peccaries: transformations in panoan myths of Ayahuasca

ABSTRACT

This article proposes to examine two of the main panoan myths related to ayahuasca as transformations of a series of other myths. By establishing a set of transformations, it seeks to demonstrate that these myths are closely linked to the myths about the relationship between humans and herds of peccaries. This connection can be understood in light of a very influential hypothesis about the history of ayahuasca diffusion, expanding it to the region of the upper rivers Juruá and Purus. In particular, we want to suggest some ideas to think about how the myths were transformed to accommodate the use of ayahuasca in their midst, and what this change means from the point of view of the cosmologies that produced those myths.
