From the Center to the Provinces: Independence Projects and the Debate of Ideas through Journalism (Rio de Janeiro - Bahia)

ABSTRACT

This article aims to investigate the political dialogue between the Court of Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, the main pole of news irradiation between the provinces of the northern region. To this end, we analyze the newspaper Semanário Cívico, produced by Joaquim José da Silva Maia, from Bahia, and the newspaper O Espelho, from Rio de Janeiro, written by Manuel Ferreira de Araújo Guimarães, between March 1821 and April 1822. We observe a war of narratives concerning the acts that took place in this context, whose reflections are perceived in the periodicals published in the regions further north, such as the Pernambuco newspaper Segarrega. From the perspective of the wide circulation of ideas and the development of different political projects of independences, we chose to take a closer look at the political vicissitudes prevailing in this period in journalism and its relations with the provinces in the context of the independence of Brazil.
