‘Minors and Vagabonds’: the legal discourse on childhood and education in the written press at the beginning of the Republic

Abstract:

The article aims to contribute to the historical studies on education and childhood based on the analysis of the representations constructed about children who were stigmatized as ‘minors’ and the educational proposals aimed at this childhood segment, questioning the legal foundations present in such representations. It focuses on the city of Uberaba, located in the Triângulo Mineiro region, at the beginning of the 20th century and utilizes the written press as the documentary core of the research. The incursion into the empirical corpus elucidated the discursive intricacies that forged child vagrancy as moral degeneration and chose an education model explicitly aimed at transforming the potential delinquent into an orderly and useful citizen to society.
