The first specialties of speech therapy emerged 20 years ago with resolution no. 156/96 of the Brazilian Federal Council of Speech Therapy. The creation of specialties and expert title was a milestone for the construction of new roads of our science. With the inclusion of new specialties in 2006, and more recently, in 2014, our science has conquered many professional spaces. As a result, advanced perspectives emerged for research within the areas the specialty encompasses.
Volume 18 (2), Revista CEFAC - Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences and Education Journal provides 25 articles that confirm the growth of speech therapy in different areas and show how the specialties contribute to studies in the Human Communication Health area, our object of study.
Audiology is represented by six original articles: newborn hearing screening program, peri intraventricular hemorrhage in newborns, habits and hearing complaints in adolescents, and temporal resolution in the elderly are issues these articles present. The interrelationship of Audiology and Language areas is present in 1 of them, with the topic clustering and switching in the hearing impaired.
This volume presents 5 articles published on Orofacial Motricity. Out of these, 4 are original ones, with issues related to post acute stroke swallowing, difficulty eating, temporomandibular dysfunction, nasalance, and pharyngeal fricative consonants. The review article introduces the topic of scientific production in Orofacial Motricity.
Issues such as rapid automatic naming in schoolers, impact of Intergenerational dialogic activities and difficulties in the writing of children are present in articles in the area of Language, which counts as another article showing the interrelation with the area of Audiology, with the theme language change and auditory processing. Brief communication addresses cases of antisocial tendency and completes the 5 language articles.
Researchers in the field of Voice contribute to this volume with 5 articles, 4 being original ones, with topics such as teachers´ voice and emotion, self-perception of the glottal function and teachers´ perceptive-auditory analysis, maximum phonation time and its relationship with BMI and gender, in children, and vocal and physical expressiveness in television journalism. The fifth article is a review on vocal speech therapy and respiratory physiotherapy, in the healthy elderly.
With 1 article per area, Dysphagia and Public Health present articles with the themes Speech Therapy in cardiac newborns and noise and quality of life in gas stations workers.
In addition to the speech therapy specialties represented by the themes of the cited articles, this volume contains an article on General Speech Therapy, whose theme is the use of electronic medical records by professionals and graduate students, and an article on Related Topics, with the theme research in tele-health in Speech Therapy.
The diversity of the specialties of the 25 articles, as well as the extent of the topics discussed show how speech therapy has operations in all life cycles and how the use of new quantitative tools is characteristic, in most of the research, herein published.
Revista CEFAC - Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences and Education Journal and ABRAMO (Brazilian Association of Orofacial Motricity) strongly reaffirm their commitment to continue disseminating and supporting publications in all specialties of Speech Therapy and related areas. We understand the importance of our journal in the scientific scenario and in the undergraduate and graduate training in speech therapy, in our country.
As editors, we have begun encouraging international contributions to our journal. The inclusion of a significant percentage of associate editors and members of the international editorial board was the first step in seeking a greater internationalization of our journal. The contribution of our readers and researchers along with their international research peers can be the second step to achieve this goal. We await your contributions, soon!
Held by ABRAMO, the 9th Brazilian Meeting on Orofacial Motricity, taking place on June 3-4 in Bauru - São Paulo, this year, will provide us with a great opportunity to see our research partners and discuss the new directions of our journal, as we await a part of our scientific community there.
