Influencing factors in the perspective of permanence in dairy farming in Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract

The article aimed to analyze the main factors that affect the perspective of permanence of producers in the dairy farming in Rio Grande do Sul. The study was based on the theoretical concept of entitlements and on a systemic perspective of vulnerability. In total, 110 producers from different regions and from four different volumes of milk production were interviewed. The analysis of the future perspective of staying in or leaving the activity was based on the construction of two logistic regression models. The regression models were based on the producers' perception of 44 vulnerability indicators. Of the total respondents, 29% said they intend to leave dairy farming in the short or medium term. The results of the two logistic regression models indicate that internal and external vulnerability indicators influence decision-making. As for the internal indicators, it is highlighted that the availability of labor, availability of successors and availability of land impact on the perspective of continuity. On the other hand, in the external context, the expansion of grain production has pressured land prices and influenced the possibilities of abandoning dairy production.
