Nosological considerations on dementia praecox from Pinel to Kraepelin

Resumos

This article intends to approach, through a narrative literature review, the conceptual evolution of the diagnosis of dementia praecox as a nosological construct in the psychiatric tradition of the 19th century and in the work of Emil Kraepelin. Dodging anachronisms, we go through the main authors who dealt with the subject, highlighting the differences in the conceptions of the French and German schools, with special attention to Kraepelin. The present study provides the ground for the next one, in which the contributions of Eugen Bleuler and Kurt Schneider are explored, arriving at the classifications proposed by the CID and DSM systems. It was concluded, when addressing the different definitions of this disorder, as well as its fundamental changes in the period in question, that the apprehension of the current concept of schizophrenia cannot occur without reference to the nosographic contexto of dementia praecox and its subsequente classifications.
