The Theoretical System of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics: Development as the ideological basis of the thoughts of leaders of the Communist Party of China

Abstract

Enshrined in the constitutions of the Communist Party of China and the People's Republic of China, the thoughts of the central leaders are referenced in speeches by politicians and are a subject of study all around the nation. Imbued with a modernizing intention, the concept of development is reviewed by each secretary-general and serves as the foundation of the party’s ideological framework, raising the question of the article: How is the conception of development explored in the construction of an ideological discourse on which the thoughts of Chinese leaders are based? Commencing with discourses and documents analysis, the article examines the "Thought of Mao Zedong", "Deng Xiaoping’s Theory", Jiang Zemin's "Three Represents", Hu Jintao's "Scientific Outlook on Development", and Xi Jinping’s "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era" in order to understand how the concept of development is adapted depending on China’s political, economic, and social context.
