RESUMO S

The experience of a nurse as a woman caretaker from a relative with cancer diagnosis

It is a question of a study that ained to explore meanings and experiences from nurses who are in familiar terms with the cancer process in their own families. It is a question of a qualitative study, a participant type, that uses Paterson and Zderad Humanistic Reference along with other authors. It was used, as an instrument, a semistructural interview with four nurses. Therefore, the work was developed in two different but linked moments. In one of them, it was allowed an individual reflection moment to the nurses, identifying the meaning given by them to the cancer experience in their own families, and also paying attention on the impact from that experience on their professional performances. In order to make it possible, it was used Paterson and Zderad nursing process. Secondly, a group meeting was carried out in order to make nurses identify and analize the expectations, necessities and values related to cancer experience in their families, detecting and reflecting on nurses know-how aspects about taking care of patients with this pathology, in that case, their own relatives. Data qualitative analysis has been performed in agreement with Bardin (1977) suggestions and through those data analysis, three relevant categories have come out: nurse-human being facing the process of cancer, opposition to the process of cancer and repercussions on Nursing. The obtained results have allowed to analyze nurses feelings when taking care of their own relatives with cancer diagnosis, as well as the importance from qualified and humanized care to that kind of patient. It was possible to identify, due to the results, the necessity of creating supporting groups for nurses, listen to the patient and his/her family throughout the ill ness process and realize that nursing is still in need of behavioral changes to become more participant, instrumental and conscious about the situation of a patient with cancer diagnosis.
