Profile of mammogram patients: a contribution to nursing and health promotion
Mammography is currently the most used diagnosis method in the early detection of breast cancer. This study has the objectives of: characterizing the women who submit themselves to mammography as to identification data, reasons for carrying out the exam and feelings witnessed before the exam; to identify the information necessities for women about the exams for early detection of breast cancer and to guide them on self-care. The study was carried out during the month of October, 2002, with 60 women who submitted themselves to the Imaging Service of the "Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Sobral-CE" Hospital. The data was collected using a directed interview, and organized into two categories from the quantitative data : characterization of the women in the study; reasons and feelings related to the mammographic exam. The results demonstrated that the women were included in an age range of 26 to 76 years, most were married (86.7%), mainly of women originating from cities neighboring Sobral (65%), and 50% of the women interviewed carried out regular breast self-examinations. The main reason for the mammographic exam was routine and the main feelings witnessed before the exam were of: fear, anxiety and tranquility. It is concluded that from these results that most women know about the importance of the mammographic exam as an early detection method of breast cancer, but feared the exam results, due to the physical and psychological modifications that the disease can cause.
