Open-access REVISTA TEXTO & CONTEXTO ENFERMAGEM (1992-2022): THREE DECADES OF HISTORY

The Journal of the Graduate Program in Nursing at Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) is celebrating its anniversary. After 30 years contributing to the Nursing science and to the Health area, Revista Texto & Contexto Enfermagem upholds its commitment to disseminating qualified scientific production, both Brazilian and international.

In terms of numbers, 31 volumes were published, including more than 2,870 articles such as original studies, literature reviews, reflections, experience reports and technological innovation reports. All of the above were selected after double-blinded peer review assessments. Currently, the Journal has 2,030 national and international advisors/reviewers. This valuable and voluntary job greatly contributes to the quality of the content published.

The history of Revista Texto & Contexto Enfermagem records important milestones. The first one concerns its creation, in 1992, when a group of teachers headed by Professor Ingrid Elsen conceived and implemented the first thematic journal in Nursing 1 - 2. At the time, this innovating character conferred a singular feature that differentiated Revista Texto & Contexto Enfermagem from the other journals in the area. The thematic editions stood out for the publications that addressed theoretical, conceptual and methodological discussions from the perspective of different researchers1 - 2.

Indexation of the Journal in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) in 2007 is considered a second milestone. From that moment on, the articles started to be available online, in full-text and open access format. Its presence in SciELO enabled greater visibility to the Journal's publications, at the same time that it also represented a quality inducer in the entire editorial process.

The third milestone dates back to 2010, when the Journal's Board of Directors decided to make it multi-thematic, along with the increase in the demand of manuscript submissions and the criteria for indexation in international databases3. In the same year, based on the solid grounds built throughout its history, the Journal expanded its team by including associated editors who started collaborating with the Editor in Chief, working in different stages of the editorial process. Another important achievement attained by the Journal is also recorded: its indexation in the Scopus Database.

Ten years ago, along with the trends of the journals with the highest impact on the Health and Nursing areas and at the global level, Revista Texto & Contexto Enfermagem started publishing English versions of all published articles. In addition, at this fourth milestone of its history, the Journal ceased to be printed and started to be only available in online format3.

The fifth milestone corresponds to the 2014-2016 period, when significant investments were made in the quality of editorial management. The submission and publication rules were updated, as well as those for the editorial processes, adopting new strategies such as using the ScholarOne Manuscripts system for manuscript submission and processing, employing the iThenticate similarity detector, and resorting to Equator Network guides to assess the manuscripts, in addition to adopting the rolling pass publication modality2.

In the last few years, the editorial team keeps its focus on its work and efforts aimed at the quality of the content published in Revista Texto & Contexto Enfermagem. Thus, new guidelines were instituted, in line with the Open Science movements, in addition to a reduction in the editorial processing, review and production times, as well as strengthening of internationalization strategies.

2020 was a particular year and was initiated under the tensions caused by the Covid-19 Pandemic. In order to fulfill the commitment to fast and good quality knowledge dissemination, the first article related to the topic was published in the SciELO Preprints repository in April 2020, after a due evaluation by peers and by the team of associated editors4. In 2020 and 2021, the Journal received 1,137 submissions and published a special Covid-19 section, prioritized in the entire editorial process.

In 2021, the first notice for the selection of national and international external associated editors was published. This initiative enabled expanding the editorial team considering quality criteria and, consequently, it inspired the work processes. Jointly, a notice for Trainee in Publishing was published, targeted at the students attending the PhD Course of the UFSC Graduate Program in Nursing. The Journal's management realized the contribution of this experience for the performance of future ad hoc advisors/reviewers and editors in scientific journals.

After three decades, the existence of an institutional project that symbolizes the researchers' transgenerational work and dedication is celebrated, mainly regarding the scope of their contribution to science, development of technologies, professional training, and impact in the health and care contexts. The relevance of Revista Texto & Contexto Enfermagem as a scientific journal is expressed in its quality and national and international recognition.

At this moment, the relevant work by authors, editors and ad hoc advisors/reviewers is noted, which allowed us to reach the first place in the CUIDEN-2020 Ranking with 2.285 impact, Scopus CiteScore of 1.4 in 2022, mean manuscript evaluation time of three months, and simplification of the manuscript submission process based on adherence to the concept of “Your Paper, Your Way!”5, therefore fulfilling the commitment to quality and dynamism in knowledge dissemination, aligned to the demands of the knowledge field and to the international editorial trends. The expectation is to increasingly attain representative pluralism levels in science from the profile of editors, especially in the breadth of contexts of the published studies.

Revista Texto & Contexto Enfermagem wishes to thank all the authors and readers who respectfully entrust their studies for publication in our journal, at the same time that they consume knowledge production and transfer it to the Health and Nursing practice contexts.
