The academic career as a profession for women: some stories from FFCL-USP

Abstract

This article explores how different women pursued academic careers in the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters, and Human Sciences at the University of São Paulo (FFCL-USP) from 1934 to 1969. The paper provides an overview of the female presence within the student and faculty body, examining the intersection of gender and the academic profession during this period. To further explore this topic, the study narrows its focus to three female faculty members who served in the Chairs of Sociology I and II: Maria Isaura Pereira de Queiroz, Marialice Foracchi, and Maria Sylvia de Carvalho Franco. The paper highlights the fact that gender disparities have significantly influenced the opportunities available to both male and female individuals in an evolving academic and institutional culture.
