The attorneys general of the Public Ministry

Abstract

Based on the historical look and the political sociology analytic tools, this text aims to discuss the establishment of rules for occupying the highest position in the hierarchy of the state Public Prosecutor’s Office: the position of Attorney General. By analyzing the trajectory of those who held this position from 1891 to after 1988, it was possible to understand the changes in the official and non-official rules regarding the morphological transformation of nominees. The study of 33 cases reveals the political and social tensions surrounding the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s high hierarchy until the 21st century.
