Brief History
Revista Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia (Brazilian Journal of Geriatrics and Gerontology; RBGG) is the continuation of Textos sobre Envelhecimento (Texts on Aging), founded in 1998. It is a specialized journal that publishes scientific research in the fields of Geriatrics and Gerontology, with the aim of contributing to the further development of issues relating to human aging. Frequency: continuous publication in electronic format, published in Portuguese, Spanish and English. The journal is open access and free of charge, and ORCID identification is provided for all authors. The abbreviated title of the journal is Rev. Bras. Geriatr. Gerontol., which must be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic legends.

Open Access
The Open Access model is followed, providing unrestricted online access, including without financial barriers, to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open access is the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants third parties rights of use under an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY), providing immediate free access to the work and permitting any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search or link to the full text of articles, track them for indexing, process them with software, or use them for any other lawful purpose. |

Publication Ethics
We adopt the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), EQUATOR Network and the SciELO Good Practice Guide for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing.
Ethical Peer Review: Reviewers and editors are responsible for the content of their reviews and comments in decision letters, respectively. Reviewer and editor comments must reflect their own assessment of the content, including whether the submission meets the journal’s requirements and complies with RBGG policies.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is not acceptable in submissions to RBGG. Plagiarized content will not be considered for publication. If plagiarism is identified, we will follow COPE guidelines.
Confidentiality: RBGG offers options through which authors and reviewers may share research early and increase the transparency of peer review. These options include opt-in opportunities to post unpublished work to preprint servers and to sign reviews.
Submission and Publication of Related Studies -Requirements for authors Upon submission of a manuscript, authors must indicate whether related manuscripts are under consideration or have been published elsewhere. If related work has been submitted or published elsewhere, authors must include a copy with their submission and describe its relationship to the submitted work. Previous dissemination of research as a thesis, a presentation at a medical or scientific conference, or a posting on a preprint server will not preclude consideration of the manuscript. -Requirements for editors and reviewers Editors and reviewers must assess any related content and notify the journal of overlap. Also, they must alert the journal if they identify duplicate submissions or publications during peer review.

Preprints
RBGG has a policy that supports the publication of preprints, in line with the principles of Open Science and good practices in scholarly communication. Manuscripts previously deposited as preprints on reliable public servers, before or in parallel with submission to RBGG, may be submitted. |
Peer-review process
Manuscript assessment — peer review Manuscripts that comply with the journal’s formatting requirements will be forwarded to RBGG Scientific Editors and subsequently to selected ad hoc reviewers. For publication, a manuscript must be approved at the following stages: 1. Desk review (Screening) The initial manuscript assessment is conducted by the Scientific Editors on the basis of objective criteria. 2. External peer review Manuscripts approved at desk review are assessed by specialists in the relevant subject area. RBGG uses a double-blind review system, ensuring the anonymity of both authors and reviewers throughout the review workflow in order to safeguard impartiality and scientific quality. The journal currently has 1,500 ad hoc reviewers, holding at least a doctoral degree, engaged in different areas of Geriatrics and Gerontology. As a final quality-control stage before publication, each article accepted for publication is read by three journal editors. 3. Final assessment At this stage, the authors make the revisions required for publication. During editing and standardization, the journal reserves the right to make formal, spelling or grammatical changes before the manuscript is sent for publication (RBGG publishes the name(s) of the editor(s) responsible for the assessment). RBGG accepts submissions of articles previously made available in preprint repositories. In such cases, authors are responsible for clearly indicating at submission where the article was previously posted, thereby ensuring transparency in the editorial process. As the authorship of a preprint may be publicly identifiable, these manuscripts are assessed through single-blind review, in which the reviewer knows the authors’ identity but the reviewer’s identity remains blinded to the authors. |
Open data
RBGG adopts SciELO’s Open Data policy. To ensure adoption of these practices, RBGG uses the Open Science Compliance Form developed by SciELO Brasil, which authors must complete at submission. RBGG requires all articles reporting original research to include a section entitled “Data Availability”. |
Article Processing Charges
Revista Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia (RBGG) is an Open Access journal and, to ensure its financial sustainability and maintain editorial quality, applies an Article Processing Charge (APC). No fee is charged at initial submission. Charges apply only following approval at the respective stages, as follows: Article approved at desk review (Screening): R$ 200.00 Article approved at final assessment: R$ 780.00 RBGG follows the SciELO Statement on Financial Sustainability, which guides indexed journals to adopt transparent and sustainable resource-management practices, ensuring the continuity of Open Access and the quality of scholarly publishing. |
Policy on Ethics, Misconduct, Corrections and Retractions
Revista Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia (RBGG) adopts ethical practices in scientific publishing in line with leading international and national references, including COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics), ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors), the EQUATOR Network and SciELO guidelines, especially the Good Practice Guide for Strengthening Ethics in Scientific Publishing. Where misconduct is suspected, the Editor-in-Chief contacts the corresponding author for clarification; the Editorial Team conducts an internal investigation and assesses the evidence, requesting additional clarification or raw data where necessary; the affiliations or funding institutions of the authors are consulted if the matter remains unresolved; and the Editorial Team makes the final decision, which may result in rejection of a manuscript (if under review) or publication of a retraction (if article has been published). Retraction occurs in cases of confirmed plagiarism; fabrication, falsification or manipulation of data; serious errors invalidating the study conclusions; duplicate publication; or serious violation of ethical standards, such as the absence of ethics-committee approval. When misconduct is confirmed, RBGG notifies the authors of the decision to retract the article; publishes a retraction notice in the journal containing the title, authors and DOI of the retracted article, the reason for retraction, identification of the body or person requesting the retraction, and the retraction publication date; and applies a visible mark to the original article indicating that it has been retracted, in accordance with SciELO guidelines for recording, marking and publishing retractions. Errors or failures that do not constitute misconduct are corrected by an erratum, following SciELO’s Guide for Recording, Marking and Publishing Errata. |
Conflict of Interest Policy
RBGG adopts the ICMJE recommendations. On submission, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. Where a conflict of interest exists, even potentially, the author(s) must declare it in a separate signed document attached in the submission platform. The same policy applies to reviewers and editors. If they identify a conflict, they must decline the invitation or notify the editorial team immediately. |
Use of similarity-checking software
RBGG adopts procedures to ensure the originality and integrity of submitted manuscripts. To this end, the journal uses Plagium, software specialized in detecting textual similarity. This check is applied to all manuscripts submitted to the journal. The procedure is carried out during preparation of the final editorial decision. The Scientific Editors perform this step using the software to identify potential textual overlap with previously published works. If plagiarism is identified after publication, RBGG will take the appropriate measures described in its retraction policy, including publication of a retraction and marking of the original article in accordance with SciELO guidelines. |
Use of Artificial Intelligence resources
RBGG accepts the use of scientific AI tools, such as NotebookLM, ResearchRabbit, Consensus, EvidenceHunt and OpenEvidence, which are considered more robust and reliable. The use of general-purpose AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini and DeepSeek, is not accepted at any stage of the research and publication process because such tools may generate inaccurate content or non-existent references. During screening and review, the journal assesses indications of AI use by authors in the form and content of the manuscript, especially the veracity of references. If non-existent references are identified (a common occurrence in text generated by general-purpose AI), the manuscript will be promptly rejected. Scientific AI tools may be used to search for scientific articles; check reference formatting; review spelling, grammar and writing; structure articles and manuscript abstracts. Likewise, AI may also be used to automate data preparation and analysis stages, provided that the criteria and procedures are clearly reported and the principle of reproducibility is respected. Editors may request the prompt used, which may comprise an appendix to the manuscript. All AI-generated content must be critically reviewed by the authors, who remain fully responsible for the submitted text, its assertions, and the veracity of its data and sources. AI tools cannot be listed as authors because they cannot assume legal, ethical or scientific responsibility for the content. Failure to disclose AI use constitutes an ethical breach because it violates the principles of transparency, integrity and honesty in research. Authors must explicitly declare the use of any AI tool in the manuscript, preferably in the Methods section or in a footnote, stating: tool or software name, version and manufacturer, purpose of use, and stage of the work at which it was deployed. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in rejection of the manuscript or, in serious cases, retraction of an article that has been published. |
Sex and Gender Issues
The RBGG editorial team and authors publishing in the journal must observe the Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER guidelines. SAGER provides guidance for reporting information on sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and the reporting and interpretation of findings. RBGG also observes gender-equity principles in the composition of its editorial board. |
Ethics Committee
Authors must attach a statement of ethics-committee approval from the institution responsible for approving the study. |
Copyright
Authors of articles published by RBGG retain copyright in their work and license it under the Creative Commons Attribution BY 4.0, which permits unrestricted reuse and distribution provided that the original work is appropriately cited. In return, they grant the journal the right of first publication, that is, the right to publish the initial version of the work, without exclusive rights to the content. |

Author Contributions
Author contributions must be specified. The journal requires authors to follow the authorship and co-authorship criteria adopted by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). We recommend use of the CRediT taxonomy to specify each author’s contribution. The journal does not permit the addition, removal, or substitution of authors after submission. The maximum number of authors per article is six. Authors are fully responsible for the views expressed in the article. Content is the sole responsibility of its authors and does not necessarily reflect the views of RBGG, its editors or its supporting institution (UnATI/UERJ). |
Manuscript Preparation
Authors must prepare manuscripts in accordance with RBGG guidelines to ensure that the work is suitable for publication. Preparation includes following the reporting guideline (checklist) appropriate to the study design, available through the EQUATOR Network, and one of the checklists specified by the journal for the most common designs (CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA, COREQ, etc.). Acceptance and publication are conditional on verification of compliance with these standards. |
