ABSTRACT: This study describes the nursing professional care practice in a surgical unit of a state hospital and in the ginecology internment unit of a hospital-school in Florianópolis - Santa Catarina based on Madeleine Leininger's Theory of Diversity and Cultural Universality of Care. The objective of this work is to identify the possibilities and restrictions of the use of this theory in the nursing hospital care. The conceptual basis considers the concepts of care, family, culture, nursing and hospital environment. Through participating observations and non-structured interviews, this care practice was developed and reports on nursing professional's routine were made. When reflecting on the experience, i was able to notice that the use of this theory facilitates the nursing work by qualifying the relationship between the nurse and the team. This will consequently reflects on the care of the patient as well as on the care of his/her family. It is worth reminding how important the family's participation is in the process of caring because it may be an active element in the recovery and decision making process. I believe that it is the nursing professional' responsibility to assure care for the families, considering the cultural aspects involving its everyday life.
