Appraisal practice in the Nacional Archives of the Unites States

Abstract:

This article aims to present how the appraisal practice is performed in the National Archives of the United States. In relation to the methodology, the research is of a basic, qualitative, and exploratory nature and used as data collection the research and document analysis on the National Archive's website, as well as the application of a questionnaire within the institution. The pioneering action of the United States, precisely by the servers of its National Archive, in structuring thoughts and actions that aimed to solve the problem of the large post-war document production and the emergence of appraisal was noticeable. They use management tools such as the temporality table and theoretically are based on Schellenberg's theory. We conclude that the practices of the National Archive are grounded in its main theoretician. Still, it also became clear that other interfering factors such as legislation and social, cultural, political, and structural contexts influence the actions of this important representative institution of archives that contributes a lot in the area of archives.
