Brief history
|
Founded in 1992, linked to the Institute of Economics of the University of Campinas (IE/UNICAMP), the journal Economia e Sociedade arose with the mission of fostering critical reflection in related areas. Initially published in print, it transitioned to exclusively electronic circulation, ending its printed version after issue 50 (Vol. 23, N. 1) in April 2014. Qualis journal classification for the 2017-2020 four-year period, when the Economia e Sociedade rose from the B1 to the A2 classification in the area of Applied Social Sciences. |
Open Access

This journal follows the Open Access model, allowing unrestricted virtual access (including free of charge) to all scientific texts published by the journal. Open access refers to the condition in which the copyright holder of an academic work grants usage rights to third parties through an open license (Creative Commons Attribution, CC-BY). This allows immediate and free access to the work and authorizes any user to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, as well as to crawl them for indexing, pass them as data to software, or use them for any other lawful purpose.

ECOS makes all content available in open access, through the SciELO platform, and uses an open license to preserve the integrity of the copyright of articles in an open access environment. ECOS is fully dedicated to adopting best practices regarding ethical conduct associated with the scientific publishing of journals, guided by the COPE code of conduct (Committee on Publication ethics). Editors' responsibilities cover several essential areas:
Additionally, the journal uses Turnitin software to identify incorrect citations and potential cases of plagiarism. This instrument analyzes the originality of the manuscript by comparing its content with information available in the program's database and on the internet. If inappropriate practices are suspected, such as plagiarism, self-plagiarism or omission of sources, an identification and resolution process will be initiated to guarantee integrity and ethics in scientific publication. |

Focus and Scope
|
The journal Economia e Sociedade aims to contribute to the development of critical reflection on topics of broad interest in the areas of economic theory, applied economics, history of economic thought and economic history. Since its creation, the journal has welcomed heterodox production inspired, above all, by the traditions of Marx, Keynes, Kalecki and Schumpeter, as well as by Latin American reflection on economic development. |

EDITORIAL POLICY

|
|
ECOS encourages the prior dissemination of manuscripts on preprint servers, especially SciELO Preprints, in alignment with open science practices. |

Peer review process
|
Articles that pass preliminary consideration will be forwarded to a Responsible Editor who will continue a peer review process (Peer Review) double blind, as follows: the manuscript will be sent to at least two anonymous reviewers belonging to institutions other than those to which the authors are affiliated, including international institutions. The names and institutions of the authors will not be revealed to reviewers, nor vice versa. Contradictory opinions can be resolved by the Responsible Editor or lead to new consultations with new reviewers. In cases where reviewers request modifications, the journal's editors mediate the dialogue between them and the authors. In all cases, the authors receive the opinions of the reviewers. ECOS utilizes the Open Science Compliance Form and within this scope adopts the publication in the final article of the name or names of the editors responsible for the evaluation. The journal annually publishes the name and institutional affiliation of its panel of reviewers .
It is up to the reviewers Take responsibility for the review process, ensuring that the principles of ethics and good research and editorial practices are adopted in the evaluation process; Preserve the confidentiality of the content relating to the evaluations under their responsibility during and after the review process; Quickly carry out the editorial tasks to which they have committed; Inform the editor responsible for the manuscript of any irregularities, suspected bad practices and/or possible conflicts of interest of the authors. Inform the editor responsible for the manuscript if there is or may be a conflict of interest on the part of the reviewer in evaluating the manuscript or circumstances preventing an impartial review of the manuscript. |
Open data

Economia e Sociedade recommends the open availability of data, code, methods, and other materials used in research through reliable repositories such as SciELO Data, thereby contributing to the transparency, reproducibility, and integrity of scientific production. |
Fee Collection

ECOS does not make any charges to authors related to the submission or publication of works. |
Ethics and Misconduct Policy, Errata and Retraction
|
Economia e Sociedade upholds the principles of research and publication integrity, in accordance with the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the best practice recommendations issued by SciELO. Misconduct includes, but is not limited to: fabrication or falsification of data, images, or results; plagiarism; failure to disclose conflicts of interest; inclusion of individuals as authors who did not significantly contribute to the work; and omission of authors who were genuinely involved in the manuscript's production. In cases of suspected misconduct, the Editorial Board will appoint an Ethics Review Committee, which will follow the procedures below:

Conflict of Interest Policy
|
The conflict of interest may be of a personal, commercial, political, academic or financial nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting the manuscript, authors are responsible for recognizing and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must inform this in a signed document attached to the submission platform. Adoption of similarity checking software
|
To detect incorrect citations and potential cases of plagiarism, the journal uses the Turnitin software , which checks the originality of the manuscript by comparing the content available in the program's database and on the internet. If there is suspicion of plagiarism, self-plagiarism , omission of sources, etc., the process described in the section “Identification and resolution of bad practices” will be initiated. |
Declaration of the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Academic Articles

Authors must declare the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the submission of academic articles. The following guidelines apply when using AI in the writing process, except for the use of AI in data analysis:

Sex and Gender Issues
|
The editorial team of Economia e Sociedade, in addition to the authors who publish in the journal, must always observe the guidelines on Sex and Gender Equity in Research (Sex and Gender Equity in Research – SAGER). The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of information about sex and gender in study design, data analysis, and results and interpretation of findings. Furthermore, ECOS observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board. |
Ethics Committee

When an article or research involves procedures involving human beings or sensitive data subject to the LGPD, authors are required to attach a statement of approval from the ethics committee of the institution responsible for validating the research. |
Copyright
|
The authors of the articles retain the copyright, licensing them under the Creative Commons Attribution BY license, which allows for the reuse and distribution of the articles without restrictions, as long as the original work is properly cited. Reproduction rights are granted to the journal upon signature of a term granting these rights to the article to be published in the journal Economia e Sociedade . Documents and materials made available by authors for public access must comply with the provisions of Law no. 9610, of February 19, 1998, which amends, updates and consolidates Brazilian legislation on copyright and provides other measures on the subject (available at: http://www.planalto.gov.br/ccivil_03/leis/l9610. htm ). |

The journal Economia e Sociedade makes all content available in open access, through the SciELO platform, and uses an open license to preserve the integrity of the copyright of articles in an open access environment. The periodical adopted the Creative license until April/2015 Commons type BY-NC. As of May/2015, the license in use is of the International Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) type. Authors are fully responsible for the content and information presented in their manuscripts. The journal Economia e Sociedade encourages authors to self-archive their accepted manuscripts by publishing them on personal blogs, institutional repositories, and academic social media, as well as posting them on their personal social media, provided that the complete citation to the journal's website version is included. |

Editorial policy

Contributions must be entered on the online submission page http://submission.scielo.br/index.php/ecos/login. Complete registration in the system and subsequent access, through login and password, are mandatory for submitting manuscripts, as well as for monitoring the ongoing editorial process. Sending a manuscript implies a commitment that, in addition to being unpublished, it is not in the process of being evaluated in another journal. However, preliminary versions of manuscripts previously published as working paper or in conference proceedings may be submitted. ECOS editorial policy establishes that each author is authorized to submit only one article for the evaluation process. In this sense, authors are encouraged to focus on the quality and relevance of the submitted work. The works selected after preliminary assessment are evaluated according to the blind system review, being forwarded to at least two anonymous reviewers belonging to institutions other than those to which the authors are affiliated. The selected texts undergo spelling and grammatical review and all published articles must have a DOI number . |
Types of documents accepted
|
The journal considers for publication unpublished articles and reviews, that is, those that have not been published in other journals (in Brazil and abroad) and as book chapters. It is important to emphasize that only critical reviews will be accepted those that offer in-depth analysis and meaningful contributions, going beyond a mere summary of the work. Economia e Sociedade adopts the “desk-rejection” policy, that is, the editors carry out a preliminary assessment of the works, being able to reject them without forwarding them to reviewers if they do not provide an original contribution and/or do not align with the scope of the journal. Authors can only have one article in the evaluation process. Works must not include authorship and references that allow identification must be avoided. ECOS publishes in Portuguese, Spanish and English. |

Authors who have articles published in the journal may be asked to collaborate as evaluators and must:
We request that each of the authors specify their contributions to the work. The corresponding author or the author who submitted the work will indicate, during the submission process, the guarantee and accuracy of the integrity of all data reported in the manuscript. The journal Economia e Sociedade relies on the use of two minimum authorship criteria: a. Actively participating in the discussion of results; b. Reviewing and approving the final version of the work. We recommend consulting the CRediT Taxonomy. |
Manuscript Preparation
|
To preserve the impartiality of the evaluation process, it is imperative that manuscripts do not include information that reveals authorship, and it is recommended to avoid references that could facilitate the identification of authors (pay attention to the authorship marks present in the file properties of the submitted article). In this way, the analysis of articles is conducted blindly, ensuring a fair and bias-free evaluation. Regarding the format of the documents, it is requested that articles and reviews are preferably sent in Word format. Additionally, it is established that articles must not exceed 70,000 characters (without spaces), while reviews must be limited to 15,000 characters. These guidelines aim to maintain consistency and clarity in publication, facilitating the review process and adaptation to the journal's standards. |

It is mandatory to present the title, abstract and keywords in English and, in the case of articles and reviews in Spanish, it is also mandatory to include the three items mentioned in the Spanish version. |
Digital Assets
|
Graphs, tables (both with title and source), equations and footnotes should be limited to the needs of the text. Furthermore, they must be sent in a format that allows editing. In the case of graphs and equations, if possible, they should be presented in SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format. |
Citations and References
|
Complete bibliographic references must be presented at the end of the work in accordance with ABNT standard NBR-6023. In the body of the text, references must only contain the name of the author, date of original publication of the work and pages or chapters used. |
