The role of archivists in relation to the General Personal Data Protection Law at federal universities in Brazil

Abstract

The present paper investigates the role of archivists in planning and discussing the implementation of the General Personal Data Protection Law (LGPD, Law n. 13,709/2018) in Brazilian federal universities. It is an applied research of an exploratory nature that, with support from the Information Access Law (LAI, Law n. 12,527/2011), collected data from 27 universities. It has a qualitative-quantitative approach to data presentation and analysis. Results indicate that most universities have established committees/work groups focused on General Personal Data Protection, but archivists were members of such groups in only 14. Some archive sectors develop actions and procedures aimed at protecting personal data concomitantly with records management and access to public information. Although some federal universities have taken measures to adjust to the LGPD in convergence with records management and public information transparency, archivists are still to be more fully inserted in discussions and propositions involving the topic. The scenario under analysis demonstrates that there are challenges to be overcome so that personal data protection becomes a common work object for Archival Science.
