Educational Sociolinguistics: An Interview with Stella Maris Bortoni-Ricardo

Abstract

This interview with Professor Stella Maris Bortoni-Ricardo is part of a dossier in Linguagem em (Dis)curso scientific journal, where she talks about the contribution of Educational Sociolinguistics to the treatement of Portuguese Language in Brazilian Schools, as well as raises critical thoughts related to teachers’ planning and action in the classroom. It introduces the reality of the Portuguese Language teaching in addition to methodological and theoretical possibilities of breaking with old-fashioned conceptions that still survive in the Brazilian public education system. The interview was (re)arranged as a dialogue and unveils a large discussion about speech and language, linguistic and educational policies, along with literacies and textual genres. Moreover, her thoughts invites us to an “inside out” criticism through a question: “How to empower Brazilian Portuguese teachers towards a productive teaching and the education of Brazilian citizens?”
